Maelsechnaill submitted to him at Tara in 1002. He brought all the Ostman towns under ontrol + tribute - acheived a unified kingdom of Ireland in a sense. On Good Friday 23 April 1014 he marhed on Dublin + fought the battle of Clontarf. He was killed by fleeing Vikings. OIHOI page 439-40 Cennetig, King of Dal Cais is called "King of North Munster". His son Brian Boru (ancestor of the O'Brians) succeeded in 976. In Book of Armach calls Brian, emperor of the Irish. He plundered Dublin + forced Sitric of the Silkenbeard, King of Dublin into submission. ILAP Page Brian Boru buried at Armagh, s e of Dungannon. ibid page 139 Brian Boru was a brother of Mahon, and they were both petty tribal leaders in the western land of Clare. Mahon rose against Ivar, a Norseman who had defeated him, and for some years ruled at Cashel in Tip- perary. Then Ivar came back with a superior force and killed Mahon. When Brion Boru discovered that his brother had fallen to treachery--the Molloys had gone over to the enemy--the young swore the usual frightful oath of vengeance. Ivor had rewarded Molloy with Mahon's kingdom of Munster. Brian got a band of men together and went straight for Ivar and his Limerick "Danes" on the holy island of Scattery. He literally scattered them there. Ivar and his two sons and most of his henchmen were slain. After which Brian sought out Molloy and did the same to him. He proclaimed himself Ard Righ over at least the southern part of Ireland, and ;he exterminated the Danes everywhere in his territory...Brian and Malachy fought each other for 20 years...eventually..they had to come together in order to defeat them (the Danes), at the great battle of Glenmama in Wicklow (A.D. 1000). After this victory Brian turned to Malachy and insisted upon being crowned High King of all Ireland....It was now that the strong man was called Brian Boru, which meant Brian of the Tribute...There was a princess called, rather unfortunately, Gormfleth, sister of the King of Leinster. She was one of those much married women, successively the bed partner of Olaf the Dane, of Malachy and of Brian Boru. Each had divorced her, because, according to an old chronicler, "she was the fairest of women, but she did all things ill." She offered herself secretly in marriage again, this time both to the Viking ruler of the Isle of Man and to Sigurd, Earl of the Orkneys. She told them that the crown of all Ireland was awaiting them if they cared to come. The dual attraction of Gormfleth's notorious charms and of Irish plunder brought the massive Viking invasion of 1013-1014. An armada of ships carrying some 20,000 violent men filled all Dublion Bay one bright morning; and Brian Boru, in extreme old age, had to face the biggest battle of his career.... Brian assembled his forces on the plain of Clontarf, outside Dublin. The battle took plce on Good Friday, April 23, 1014. (Brian at age 88 could not fight but his son Morroough fought better than the combined talents of ten men. When news of the victory came to Brian Boru he fell upon his knees in his tent ... and at that moment the Viking ruler of the Isle of Man, a predator named Brodar, fleeing from the field, saw the white-haired monarch in the tent, rushing in, and split his head open with an axe. his son Morrogh fought better than the

and he was on his knees in prayer of thanksgiving when The Celts" The middle of the tenth century the Eogenact dynasty of Cashel lost its supremacy to North Munster, or Thomond, and to Cenetig, the ruler of the Dal Cais and his son Brian Boruma (Boru), who led the attack against the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. This great battle put an end to the Vikings supremacy in Ireland... Brian had married Sihtric's mother, and Sihtric had perhaps, in his turn, married Brian's daughter. FOI page 216 By 853 when Olaf the White, son of the Norwegian king came to rule over the Norsemen in Ireland from the neeeeeeeew Norse capital of Dublin the worst of the raids were over. Late in (the tenth) century a large fleet of "Black Gentiles" - Danes (the name refers not to their personalities but to the prevailing color of their hair the Norwegian invaders were known as "White Gentiles) entered the mouth of the Shannon, entrenched themselves on king's island, now part of Limerick, and in- vaded and plundered all of Munster. But the liberator was at hand. In the 8th c a small clan, the Dal Cais... had established itself in the eastn ern part of County Clare... Two brothers, Mothgamain the elder + Brian, desc of the founder, emerged in the 10th c as able guerrilla leaders against ... the Norse... In 963 Mathgamain succeeded to the throne of Munster at Cashel. He + Brian continued to harass the Norse finally inflicting a decisive defeat on their leader Ivar, King of Limerick, at the battle at Sulchaid in Tipperary in 967. In 976 Mathgamain wasmurdered and Brian succeeded him. He ruled Munster from Kincora, the family seat at Killaloie... In the territory of Ui Neill, whose king Malachy II, claimed the high kingship of all Ireland. In 997 Brian + Malachy met near Clonfort and made an agreement that Brian would be King of the Sough half of Ireland + Molachy of the north... 5 years later Brian... broke their aagreement. In 1022 he persuaded the Ui Neill king to resign his throne and had himself declared king of all Ireland, "Brian Imperator Scottorium" he directed his scribe, Mac Ling, to enter in the "Book of Armagh", in imitation of Charlemagen, a sovereign gretly admired by Brian. Brian never broke the law. He usurped no throne: Munster came to him on the death of his elder brother, who had a legal claim to it; northern Ireland and with it the high-kingship of Ireland were his prize when Malachy gave in, willingly enough, to the pressure of circumstances... For the first time Ireland had a king who transcended the constricting boundries of the tuath and the clan...Brian was the first king who gave Ireland something like a national consciousness... He was a patron of the arts + learning as well as a reformer in ecclesiastical affairs. The outstanding figure is Brian Boru (941-1014) whose remarkabel career as High King of Ireland ended with his death on the field fo the battle of Clontarf when the Norsemen were finally subdued. Page MacLiag's poem to Brian upon his death. Oh where, Kincora, is Brian the great, and where is beauty that once was thine, Oh where are the princes and nobles that sate To feast in they halls and drink red wine, Where, O Kincora!

They are gone, those heroes of royal birth, Who plundered no churches, who broke no trust; 'Tis weary for me to be living on earth When they, O Kincora, lie low in the dust. Low, O Kincora. This was sheer inventio;n, but it nevertheless guaranteed the liberty of the entire kingdom...Finally when the king of France became the liegeman of St Denis and accepted the Oriflamme (the great red banner, supposedly Charlemagne's own in a state of miraculous preservation, that accomopanied the kings of France into battle), it also became his sared duty to exercise the rights of the saint on earth. ibid page 188 The king of France was not a second David, on the pattern of Charlemagne; rather, he was another Melchizedek, for Melchizedek has been both king of Salem and priest. TF page Constantius reigned in 355 for 28 days. The next Roman Emperor of Frankish origins was to be Charlemagne, inaugurated in an equally illegitimate fashin in the year 800. ibid page 225 Einhard, in his "Life of Charlemagne" relates that this Frankish king (crowned Emperor in 800) wore 'the national dress'. Next to his skin PCD page 18 Charlemagne's father of Pepin. he had a linen shirt and linen drawers; and then long hose and a tunic edged with silk. He wrapped himself in a blue cloak, and always had a sword strapped to his side, witha ahilt and belt of gold or silver...He hated the clothes of other countries, no matter how becoming they might be, and he would never consent to wear them... On feast days he walked in procession in a suit of cloth of gold, with jewelled shoes, his cloak fastened with a golden brooch and with a crown of gold and precious stones on his head. ATahus the name; of Ansegis (602-685), son of St Ar;nulf (582-640), bishop of Metz, and Clotilda, was already assimilated to that of Aeneas's father. Ansegis married St. Bega (died 694), daughter of Pepin of Landen and his wife, St. Itta, a daughter of Arnoald, 27th bishop of Metz, whose father was named Ansbert and was of a noble Gallo-Roman senatorial family. A stronger line of descent from the same Ansbert was through Charles's grandmother, Hrotrud (died 724), wife of Charles Martel. She was almost certainly a great-great-great-great-great granddaughter of Ansbert. Genealogical research suggests moreover that Ansbert himself was probably a grandson of Tonantius Ferreolus, consul in 453, a friend and relative of the poet and bishop of Clermont, Sidonius Apollinaris; and that Tonantius Ferreolus was a grandson of Afranius Syagrius, a Gallo-Roman consul in 381. If these data are valid, Charles the Great was also a descendant of theRipuarian branch of Frankish rulers who had their seat of government at Cologne, for St. Arnulf's great-grandfather Munderic was a son of Cloderic the Parricide (died 509), who was son of Sigibert the Lame (died 509), who was son of Childebert (living 420), kinsman of King Colovis I. Whatever the precise details, Charles was aware that his family reached back not only to the Germanic, but also to the proud Roman heritage, back indeed to days when there was a Roman emperor in the West and when his ancestors were officials of the Roman empire.

TF page 7 The crucial period for the development of the idea of the Franks as a unified people was almost certainly the reign of Clovis (c 481 - c 511)

ibid page 78 Childeric's son Clovis has been seen as the founder of Frankish power in western Europe: the king who united the Franks under one rule, led them in a series of largely successful campaigns against other powers, and brought them to Catholic Christianity.

ibid page 121 Clovis's Burgundian wife Clotild wanted him to agree to baptise their first son, Ingomer...Gregory devises a little sermon for her to preach to her husband...the child was baptised, and promptly died....Clotild had her second son baptised, and when he too fell ill she prayed and the child recovered a sign from Heaven. Later...Clovis fought against the Alamanni. He prayed to the Christian god on the battlefield, and was granted vicotry, a story which suspiciously parallels the conversion of Constantine, the first Christian Emperor.

Ibid Three thousand of Clovis's army were baptized at the same time, as well as his sisters Albofled and Lantechild.

FMA page 13 There was also the more distant memory of Clovis's pact with the Catholic Church, as a result of which he and his people saw themselves as especially chosen by God.

ibid page 15 St Martin had been the object of Clovis's especial devotion, and he had declared him patron saint of the Franks.

She was a Catholic Christian (unlike her family, who were Arians, not believing in the equality of the person in the Trinity) and Gregory saw Clotilde as responsible for initiating the process of Clovi's conversion. Another element in that process...was a battle which Clovis fought against the Alamanni (c 496)...In the midst of a battle which was going badly for the Franks, Clovis called upon Jesus Christ and promised to be baptised if he won the battle, which he duly did...Clovis's eldest son Theuderic.

PC page 71 David I, king of Scotland from 1124 to 1153, was a combination of administrator, church patron and freebooter. He invaded the north of England in 1138...This provoked the nearest thing to spontaneous, popular resistance since the Viking invasions some 250 year earlier.

ibid page 78 In the fourteenth year of King Stephen's reign (1149) David king of Scots knighted his own nephew Henry. As a large force was assembled for this ceremony, David having a large retinue, and his nephew having in his own following the nobles of west England, King Stephen was alarmed lest they should proceed to attack York.

KQOB p. 94 David I (grandson of Duncan) had been brought up in England, on his accession granted Scottish estates to his foreign friends, including a Breton called Fitz Alan and three Normas called de Comyn, de Balliol and de Bruce, and din the years that followed members of theirfamilies married y\royal children.

In 1170 when Strongbow landed near Waterford with an army of about 3000 men, the Irish king belatedly realized that Diarmait and his friends were breaking rules. The Irish, falling back everywhere, would not be conquered...It would take four agonizing centuries, baneful to both nations, before Ireland would become a colony of England, and the hate would never die.
