Family Farms -- ottercreek section 1 SE to kiron

Kiron Kountry's Family Farms

Family Farms in Otter Creek and Stockholm townships

This aerial photo was taken 19900930. The plane is flying north and west of Kiron. The view is looking to the southeast. The settlement in the center of the picture is present day Kiron, Iowa. It did not come into existence at this location until the railroad was built in 1899. The center of commerce for the Swedish community before then was at the "Old Kiron" crossroads. It was located on the 'Spirit Lake Airline' road. So was the Swedish Baptist Church which stood on the crest of the hill on the Anders Andersson farm. The Kiron Cemetery site came into existence in 1868 when the Clausson's were looking for a place to bury their dead children. Nils Lindberg designated the crest of the hill at the corner of his farm as a burial spot. Four years later, Nils himself was buried there. Then, Peter Olsson bought the land contract from the Providence Western Land Company for the 80 acres on which the cemetery stood and upon receiving title, he transferred 2 acres to the cemetery board organization. The cemetery has expanded its acreage twice since then. Around 1100 decedents are buried there. The register and map of the cemetery are exceptionally good (but not perfect).

Otter Creek Township section #1 was at the northwest corner of the land parcel the Swedes obtained from the Providence Western Land Company. Most of the designated farms in this photo are in Stockholm Township in sections 7, 8, 17, and 18. Those to the extreme right are in Otter Creek section 12 and 13. The Otter Creek flows from left to right along the ribbon of trees extending from the 'Norelius designation' to the 'Ljungberg designation'. Ljungberg is one of those most frequently mistaken names. For many years, the Crawford county official records spelled their name as ''Gumberg'. The family itself chose the spelling 'Youngberg'. Outside of the Swedish community, the spelling 'Ljungberg' is never seen.

The road intersection at present day Kiron is 14 miles north of Denison, Iowa on HiWay #39. Odebolt, Iowa lies 12 miles off to the left on HiWay #39. Deloit is 7 miles to the south and Schleswig is about 7 miles away to the south west if you are a bird. The town of Boyer is about 5 to 6 miles to the east.
