Table of East Tennessee Germanna Families
Tennessee Germanna Families List

The early German settlers in lower Washington County & upper Greene County, TN, were comprised of 3 main groups, but mainly of the 1st group below:

1.  The "2nd Germanna Colony" German families, whose members arrived in Virginia in 1717, from villages in the Kraichgau area of Baden-Wrttemberg, Germany, and who later migrated to Tennessee.

2.  German families from the same general area of Germany as the 2nd Colony, but who arrived between 1718 and later, and settled in the same area of Virginia as the 2nd Colony, then migrated on to Tennesse with them.  (Some of these families were probably related to some of the families of the 2nd Colony, or at least knew of them.)

3.  German families who emigrated from Germany but did not arrive in Virginia, but who migrated later into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  (Some of these families did subsequently migrate to the Robinson River Valley of Virginia where the earlier Germans were settled, and then migrated on to Tennessee with them.  Others migrated directly from the Shenandoah Valley to East Tennessee at about the same time as families of groups 1 and 2 above.)

4.  The "1st Germanna Colony" German families, of whom some migrated to Tennessee at the same time as the families of the 2nd Colony.

(The surnames are given with the original German spellings (where known) in bold letters and with the "Americanized" spellings.)

(*The Waddell/etc. family above is of Irish extraction, but its members married so heavily into the East Tennessee Germanna and other German families I feel it should be included here.  I doubt that there is a member of this family from Greene County, TN, that does NOT have at least one Germanna ancestor, probably several.)

(*The Bayles/Bayless, Patton, and Seaton families are probably not of German extraction, but, likewise, they married so heavily into the East Tennessee Germanna and other German families they should be included also.)

If there are any names missing, or if other variations of spelling need to be added, send me an email, and I'll add them.

MAPS OF THE AREA:   The maps are below, with an explanation of each.

Below the maps are driving directions from Greeneville and Johnson City, as formulated by MapQuest (with a little editing from me).

(NOTE:  The first 3 maps on this page are Thumbnails of the actual maps.  They were created to make this page load quicker.  To view one of the actual maps, just left-click on its image.  If you wish to save the map files to your computer, DON'T do so from the Thumbnails!  You must click the Thumbnail to load the full-sized map, THEN save it.)

Map # 1

Map Nr. 1 is large-scale and shows the Church in relation to Johnson City and Greeneville, TN.  The Church is depicted by a gray star, outlined in red, approximately in the center of the map.
(File size:  600 x 600,  140,884 Kbytes)

Map # 2

Map Nr. 2 is a smaller scale map and shows the Church in relation to State Highway 107 out of Greeneville.  Again, the location is shown by a gray star, outlined in red.  This map will aid those arriving via Greeneville.  Coming from Greeneville on State Route 107, as soon as you see the sign that identifies the Greene County-Washington County line start looking for Jerry Broyles Road on the left.  It's less than a half mile past the sign.
(File size:  600 x 600,  110,531 Kbytes)

Map # 3

Map Nr. 3 is a smaller-scale map and shows the Church in relation to Limestone, just off US Highway 11E from Johnson City.  (This map is quite large in height.  You won't be able to see all of it in one screen and it will be necessary to scroll down.  I tried to outline the route from Highway 11E to the Church in the color green.  (An alternate route from Limestone is shown in pink.  This is the "old" route, which goes past the road to the Davy Crockett Park.)  This map will also help those coming from Greeneville via Highway 107, the Erwin Highway.  (The Jerry Broyles Road from Highway 107 to the church is outlined in blue.)  If anyone wants to print this map, using 8 x 14 paper produces a copy suitable for navigation.  If you use 8 x 11 paper, it will be much smaller and some of the geographical names may not be legible.)
(File size:  600 x 894,  142,894 Kbytes)
