Death of Conrad Breÿhel

Death of Conrad

This is a very unusual entry. Conrad was the father of Johannes and his death was accidental. The interpretation of how he died is subject to debate. Native German speakers have said it's ambiguous.  The word über is most commonly used to mean over, but can also mean from atop.

So, Conrad either fell out of a crabapple tree, or fell over a crabapple tree.  In either case, he broke his back and died.

Note the little crescent to the far left. That's the sign for the Moon, and indicates that the day was Monday. Other signs were used for the other days of the week.

This is a scanned version of a photocopy of a microfilm image. The microfilm image shows more fine line detail and subtlety than can be shown here.
