The white altar cloth is a welcome relief to the darker tones inside the church.  The church itself is small, with some seating on the main floor and a small balcony along one side.

The pipes of the organ are housed in very ornate cabinetwork.  Note the cherubs and the harpist.  The interior walls of the church are highly decorated and some of the work can be seen on the walls.

(May, 2000)

Every piece of wood, excepting the organ case, is painted.  Some of the plaster is also painted.  There is nothing modest about the choice of colors, or the number of colors that are used.  "False graining" is popular.

Kettenbach Church
(May, 2000)

On Eleanor's 68th birthday we were in Kettenbach, the village from where her ancestor, Martin Zerby, came in 1709.  The emigration of 1709 set the pattern which the Germanna Colonists followed within a few years.  The citizens of Kettenbach love to use paint inside and outside of buildings.  The Kettenbach Church, shown here, was not built until 1751, so Martin Zerbe (or Serbi, or Zerby) did not know this building.

Kettenbach Church Book
(May, 2000)

Pfarrer Worch and John are looking at the church book, where the baptism of Johann Martin Zerby is recorded.  The book is more than 300 years old, but it is in excellent condition.  (One could wish that they had written more clearly with a better ink.)  This was Saturday afternoon.  Saturday evening we attended a solo violin concert at the church, and Sunday morning we went to the service and heard Pfarrer Worch.  He told the congregation of our visiting, but it was probably not news to them, as they had seen us walking around the village before this time.  This picture was taken in the Sunday School room.

Kettenbach House Painting
(May, 2000)

The use of paint in Kettenbach extends to the exteriors of houses where many scenes were painted.  From the house number in the corner, one can judge that these birds are larger than life size.  In Germany, one is tempted into using one's camera on many occasions.
