Photos of Guttenberg Castle, Germany

(For history and details of this castle, see Page Nr. 37, Notes 913 through 916.)

Guttenberg
Outer Gate
Guttenberg Outer Gate
(May, 2000)

This is the outer gate of Guttenberg Castle.

(Note from Eleanor:  In the picture, John is seen approaching the gate, which is raised (they probably saw him approaching from the tower and opened it). Normally, the gate would have been closed, and had I given them a hard time they would have poured hot oil on me from the box-like structure on the wall above the gate.)

(Note from SgtGeorge:  From John's apprehensive stance, I wonder if he's trying to decide whether or not to enter those dark confines. John, there weren't really any bad guys in armor in there were there?)

Guttenberg Castle
Court Yard
Guttenberg Castle Court Yard
(May, 2000)

(Note from Eleanor:  From the top of the tower, John took this picture of the inner court yard. It is rather small, and the outer court yard had to be used for the routine chores. On the right are the living quarters, and in the left building a few useful tools and artifacts are displayed [such as a rack].)

Guttenberg Castle
Tower
Guttenberg Castle Tower
(May, 2000)

(Note from Eleanor:  On a tour through the castle, John stopped on the top of the inner wall to take a picture of the tower. He anticipated that a few centuries later there would another style of railing atop the tower. At the height John is taking the picture from, it is about one-half of the tower height.)

(Note from Eleanor:  In case John had been trying to deceive the castle occupants, he is met by a guard.)

(Note from SgtGeorge:  I told you he was afraid of something in that castle!)

View from the
Guttenberg Castle
Tower
Kettenbach House Painting
(May, 2000)

(Note from Eleanor:  John took this picture from the top of the tower, where he could see the countryside for several leagues.; The river below is the Neckar, where, in 1717, a number of our Germanna 2nd Colony ancestors would have been passing by, going down the river to America. From here, several other castles could be seen and messages could be sent to them.)

Diorama of
theThirty
Years' War
Diorama of the Thirty Years' War
(May, 2000)

(Note from Eleanor:  One of the large battles of The Thirty Years' War was fought near Guttenberg.; It involved about 30,000 men.

This diorama of about 5,000 tin soldiers illustrates the battle at its height. The Protestants fared badly after one of their ammunition wagons exploded.)

Guttenberg
Jousting

  Gemmingen Church Date Stone
(May, 2000)

Another Diorama. This one shows the jousting participants.

(Note from Eleanor:  John actually prefers "Free Cell" to jousting, which looks as if one could get hurt. Jousts were actually quite rare. The Emperor held them at irregular intervals; the book listing the Official Jousts is still available.)
