Garr Family Villages Photo Gallery

(This Page Was Last Modified Saturday, 11-Jul-2009 00:19:04 MDT.)

In May, 2000, and in May, 2002, John and Eleanor Blankenbaker traveled to Germany and Austria to visit villages from which our Germanna ancestors immigrated.  This page contains photos taken in the German villages connected with the GAAR (GARR-GAR) family.  The villages are ILLENSCHWANG, OBERMICHELBACH, BEYERBERG, AUFKIRCHEN, and FRANKENHOFEN.
(Each photo is labeled for the month & year it was taken.)

Photos of GAAR Family Villages, Germany

Illenschwang Church

Illenschwang Church Interior
(May, 2002)
(File size:  885 x 601,  170,699 Bytes)

This is in the Illenschwang church, which is shown in more detail on another page. The people are, L to R, Friedrich Gaar, Gisela Gaar, Martina Gaar, and John Blankenbaker. While waiting for the Illenschwang pastor, John was showing the Gaars a picture of the Hebron church and a copy of Huddle's History of the Hebron Church, which he is giving as gifts to the Illenschwang church. Martina is fifteen years and acted as our interpreter. She is a smart kid, but then aren't all the Gaars smart? .

Obermichelbach

(File size:  885 x 386,  218,771 Bytes)

Obermichelbach is a village less than two miles from Illenschwang, and is where the Garrs live. They go to church here, not in Illenschwang. They have a small acreage and raise some sheep and three children, Martina, Silke, and Norbert. The five of them have a band.

All of the villages shown in this series are very close together.

Aufkirchen

(May, 2002)
(File size:  770 x 601,  218,471 Bytes)

Andrew (or Andreas) Gaar's parents were married in this church at Aufkirchen. Probably, the tower was there at the time, but the rest of the church has probably been rebuilt or modified.

Frankenhofen

(May, 2002)
(File size:  630 x 586,  166,034 Bytes)

Andreas Gaar was born in the village of Frankenhofen, and was baptized in the church there. The village has much agriculture, though the majority of the people probably work in service or industry.

Frankenhofen
Maibaum

Frankenhofen Maibaum
(May, 2002)
(File size:  855 x 586,  238,220 Bytes)

The citizens of Frankenhofen decorated their Maibaum by carving the bark, a feature we saw on this trip at some other village. They also decorated around the base with model buildings (compare the church) and flowers. They seemed to show a lot of pride in their village.

(File size:  695 x 526,  167,560 Bytes)

Germans mark the birthdays ending in zero as a special event. This banner says, "Hard to believe, but true, our Gerhard will be 50 years old today." This was hanging on a building for all to see.

Beyerberg Village

(File size:  540 x 817,  167,871 Bytes)

Beyerberg is where about fourteen ancestors of Eva Seidelmann lived. Eva was the wife of Andreas Gaar, and came with the family to Pennsylvania, and, hence, to Virginia, where they settled on Gaar's Mountain in the Robinson River Valley.
