John Gilmore FLESHMAN and Family

John Gilmore FLESHMAN & Family

This photo was provided by Joanne L. SMITH WATSON, great-great-granddaughter of John G. FLESHMAN.  Below is the text she sent with the photo.

"The man with the white beard is the John G. (I think that stands for Gilmore) FLESHMAN family of Dennis, Greenbrier Co., West Virginia.  John was my great-great-grandfather (son of Henry Hy Fleshman and Mary Elizabeth Thompson) husband of Susan M. OSBORN, standing directly behind him.  Beside Susan is my great-grandmother Rhoda Frances FLESHMAN SMITH, wife of the gentleman standing against the tree, William Willie Clarke SMITH, son of James Willard SMITH and Martha Ann BROWN.  At Willies feet, holding his own leg, is my late grandfather, Willard AL Clinton SMITH, who passed away in March 2000.

The oldest lady in black is also my great-great-great-grandmother (AND my great-great-great-grandaunt) Virginia Jane Jenny OSBORN FOX BROWN, daughter of Leonard OSBORN & Betsy MELONE, this was Willies maternal grandmother and also an aunt of Susans.

I was sent this photo by a Fleshman cousin whose parents still reside outside of Rainelle, West Virginia, on Fleshman land.  He said that this was taken on top of Fleshman Mountain in the summer of 1925.  I wish that my grandfather had been alive when I received this photo; at least he would have been able to tell me who most of these people are."

Willard Clinton "Al" SMITH, His Parents and Siblings

Willard Clington

(continued from above)
"The second photo is of my grandfathers (grandfather Willard Clinton "Al" SMITH's) family when he was a child; he is the second oldest child (the boy on the right).  He kept that look on his face his entire life!  [And it looks like Al's father, "Willie", kept the same look on his face all his life too!  Compare both with the picture above.  GWD]

Al's mother was Rhoda Frances FLESHMAN as noted above.  The location was Uncle Tuck John Smiths farm near Sam Black Church, Clintonville, Greenbrier Co., WV.  My father said that the farm was replaced by Highway 64."

Jenny BROWN and Descendants

(Continuing with photos and comments by Joann L. SMITH WATSON:)

Jenny BROWN and her descendants.

This is a photo taken by my grandfathers cousin, Mae, daughter of Nora Jane Smith Samples (d/o James Willard & Martha Mattie Brown).

Jenny Brown is the old lady in black (in the middle of the picture), the tall dark-haired woman behind her is Mattie Brown Smith; the lady behind Mattie is Susan Osborn Fleshman.  I could not understand why Susan was there at that picnic at Grandmother Brown's farm, until I found out that she might be an Osborn & Jenny was her AUNT.  The smiling young girl is Nora Jane Smith Samples, whom I met as a teenager.  I think that the little baby in the girl's lap is my Papaw and the woman behind the girl is Rhoda F. Smith, and the other little boy is Uncle Sam (John Elves Smith, Papaws brother).
