![]() If you are researching the CARPENTER/ZIMMERMAN surname that is of German origin, you should be aware that the surname CARPENTER was actually ZIMMERMAN in Germany. ZIMMERMAN in German means CARPENTER in English. Now to the problems with this name. When the "2nd Germanna Colony" arrived in the Virginia Colony in 1717, there was a ZIMMERMAN family on board, headed by Christopher ZIMMERMAN -- this family had come from Sulzfeld, Germany. The family kept the ZIMMERMAN name and none ever changed to the English equivalent of CARPENTER. (The reason for the "Germanna Colony" designation was that they were settled in the area which later became known as "Germanna", or "Fort Germanna". The "1st Germanna Colony" arrived in 1714.) Three years later, in 1720, a few more emigrants families arrived from the same general area of Germany and settled in the same general area as the 1717 emigrants. This second group also contained a family named ZIMMERMAN, headed by William and John (Wilhelm and Johann). When this second family was settled in the same area of Virginia as the first ZIMMERMAN family, the second family wanted to have some way to keep the two families separate, so they adopted the English version of the name, CARPENTER. They never appear in the civil records as ZIMMERMAN as they seem to have converted to the use of CARPENTER quite early. At the church, they were sometimes called ZIMMERMAN, but never in civil records.
So, if you are researching CARPENTER, you should keep in mind that the original name was ZIMMERMAN; if you are researching ZIMMERMAN, be sure to keep separate the two original emigrant families, and conduct your searches accordingly. (Keep in mind that some descendants of the "2nd Germanna Colony" ZIMMERMAN family may have kept the ZIMMERMAN name, or may have later reverted back to that name. We know of none, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have happened.)
