Simeon BROYLES Family of Washington & Greene Counties, Tennessee

Simeon Broyles House in Washington Co., TN

Simeon Broyles Home

Picture of the Simeon Broyles house located in the "Bent", in Washington Co., TN.  (The "Bent" is the local name for the bend of the Nolichuckey River near the Philadelphia community.)  The picture was made about 1920, while most of the house was still standing.  By the late 1940's the only thing visible was about 4 foot of the chimney and the foundation.  "Family lore" has it that this was the home of Simeon Broyles, which is a documented fact; however, considering the apparent age of the house, it is more likely that it was built originally by Simeon's father, James, and that Simeon inherited it from his father.  Note that the chimney was constructed of "laid stone" and that no mortar was used between the stones, whis would indicate the house is much older than originally thought.  [Simeon was the son of James, son of Jacob, son of Hans Jacob, son of Johannes BREHEL (John BROYLES), the immigrant.]

Lovette/Broyles House Photos

This page contains photographs take by my Uncle, Glenn D. BROYLES, in Greeneville, TN, in the summer of 1997.

Lovette House #1

This house is located in Greeneville, TN.  It was built by Charles Anthony LOVETTE in the late 1800's, before he and his entire family moved to Kinsley, KS, in December, 1885.  William M. BROYLES (the great-grandfather of this writer, George W. Durman), shown above with his family, was hired by Charles to burn the bricks used in constructing the house.  One of Charles' daughters was Samantha Josephine LOVETTE and during the construction of the house, she and William fell in love and were subsequently married.

This is a picture of the same house, taken from a different angle.  The current occupant of the house is Willis BROYLES, a great-grandson of Jacob "Black Jake" BROYLES, who was born 13 January, 1793.

Worth area, but no Bonners or Bennies were found, and we can find no marriages between the Bonner family and the Broyles family.  We've searched for all possible combinations, e.g., "Bonner Bennie Broyles", "Bennie Bonner", "Broyles Bonner", "Bonner Broyles", etc.  Nothing can be found.  If anyone can help, we would appreciate it.

Isaac Newton BROYLES Family

Isaac Newton BROYLES-Confederate Soldier

Unknown BROYLES Confederate Soldier, Green Co., TN

This photo was originally placed on eBay for sale by someone who had found it at an estate sale.  That seller stated, "Here is a cased tintype image of a Confederate Soldier.  The image came from a Broyles family estate sale.  The image is very clear and sharp.  The man has the look of what you would expect a soldier to look like.  The cheeks are tinted.  The case is missing half of the front flap.  There is a name "I. Broyles" written on the inside."

This was originally an "unidentified" photo.  Since it was first posted, I have worked with several Broyles researchers, especially with John "Ken" Broyles, and we have identified the person in the picture (we think).  He is Isaac Newton Broyles, born 2 Aug 1844, Horse Creek, Greene Co., TN, died 3 Nov 1935, Spring City, Rhea Co., TN.  He was married to Mary Parmelia Gannaway on 13 Aug 1873 in Rhea Co., TN.  A photo of a news clipping, showing two of his sons, is just below.

Two Sons of Isaac Newton BROYLES

Two Sons of Isaac Newton Broyles

This newspaper clipping was sent to me by John "Ken" Broyles.  (Thank you, Ken!)  It concerns the birthday of Winfield "Scott" Broyles, and contains information on his brother "Truman" Cross Broyles, and Scott's wife, Elizabeth Marshall.  This article was written in 1966; the two brothers died just short of two years later, within 5 days of each other.  Scott died 7 Jan 1968 in the Wolf Creek Community, Rhea Co., Tennessee; Truman died 12 Jan 1968 in the same community.  Ken says this helps identify the "I. Broyles" whose picture is just above.

Benetta Elizabeth BROYLES Tombstone (nee FOSTER)

Benetta Elizabeth Broyles (nee FOSTER) Grave Marker

This grave marker is located in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Ft. Worth, Tarrant, Texas.  By searching the Internet, we have found that Benetta was married to Johnnie Loyd Broyles, Sr..  (The information on here was found on a website for Tarrant Co., Texas births, where her son, Johnnie Loyd Broyles, Jr., was listed.  That website gave Benetta's maiden name, and the name of her husband, who is found on several other websites as "John Loyd Broyles", "John L. Broyles", and "John Lloyd Broyles"; however, all the information on this family has been "cleansed" to remove all other data (seems Benetta was still living at the time those databases were posted).  We CANNOT tie this John L. Broyles in to the family tree; if anyone can help, please contact me.  (Benetta is not located anywhere else on the Internet!  We only know of her because of the birth record of her son.  It is possible that she is related to the Bonner Bennie Broyles located on this page.)
