When he was 9 years old, John was captured by Shawnee Indians from his family’s farm in Kentucky and raised among the Ottawa Indians in Canada. He lived among the Indians for 30 years before reconnecting with his family in abut 1817.
John married briefly for a third time in the early 1840s to a white woman in Detroit, with whom he had one child.
