Note. A brief pamphlet, “The Early History of the Guthrie Family”, written by Henry Guthrie in 1946 lists this George Nelson Guthrie as the ancestor of the Guthrie family in the late 1700s, but his identity has not been documented and this name may be an error. :2337
According to Henry Guthrie, the Guthries are descended from Covenanters, Scottish Presbyterian dissenters who battled with English Episcopalians in Britian during the 1600s and came to New Jersey in the 1680s.
