DESCRIPTION: Public Records Office: Final Description. Age 42 [1816]. Height 5 ft. 8 ins. Brown Hair, Grey Eyes, Fresh Colmplexion.

1763 BIRTH: Public Record Office: Enlisted 17th June 1802 and discharged from military service 26th March 1816, age 42. John Steele Journal: . . . was born near Holywood in the year 1763.

John had 17 or 18 half brothers and sisters of which 11 belonged to Elizabeth Greenfield. All were dead in 1878. 13 children in all. The three oldest children were raised by Elizabeth Greenfield's family. John lived there until he went to the Army.

1792 RESIDENCE: John Steele, Journal: John Steele lived at home until he was 18 years old. Lived with Elizabeth Greenfield's family until he went to the Army.

1788 MILITARY: John Steele, Journal: John Steele lived at home until he was 18 years old and then enlisted to serve the King in the war then raging between what was called the Rebells and the Government about the year 1788. He served seven years in what was called the Downshire Millitia, and when the war was over he volunteered into the Regular service (1st Regiment of foot) and went to fight the French and Dutch in the West India Islands where he served during the war which lasted twelve years. He served 21 years in the West indies and North and South America, then home to the Battle of Waterloo after which he got his discharge. He was 16 years a sargent. While in Ireland during the rebellion he served at Wexford, Vinegar Hill, and many other prominant places. He enlisted in the Downshire Malitia at age of 18. Served 7 years in the Rebellion of 1786.

1792 MILITARY: Public Record Office: Private John Steele, 1st (or Royal Scots) Regt. In reply to your letter of 27 April, Regimental Descriptiohn Books (W.O.12/308) show hat Johh Steele born at Hollywood, County Down, and by trade a linen weaver, enlisted in the 1st Regt. 17th June 1802, having served previously 6 years 10 months in the Downshire Melitia. THe DIscharge Certificate in Regulasr Soldiers Docments (W.O. 97/237) shows that Pte. John Steele was discharged 26th March, 1816, "worn out". Of 15 years service he had served 11-1/2 years overseas (the Regiment was in Egypt 1801, and ws present at the following battles in he Penninsular War, Corunna, Basaco, St. Sebastian and Nive). Final Description. Age 42. Height 5 ft. 8 ins. Brown Hair, Grey Eyes, Fresh Cmplexion. The military records of this period make no reference to soldiers parents, wife or family.
