Marvin H. Platt, Sr., born 1887, died 1971 is buried in Lake Dale Baptist
Church Cemetery. He was married to Cordia Branning, born 1903, died 1995.
I am not related to the Platts, but knew both Mr. and Mrs. Platt. Mr. Platt
was a deacon of Lake Dale Baptist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Platt's son, Marvin
Henry Platt, Jr. is also buried at Lake Dale.

My latest project is to look up the obits for the people buried at Lake Dale
Baptist Ch. Cemetery. I am a former member, and knew many of the people
buried there. I have not found Mr. Platt's obit yet, but if it is of
interest to you, let me know and I will forward it to you when I locate it.

Sincerely,
Teresa McGowin

Christopher:
I will look for Mr. Platt's obit. next time I get a chance to go to the
Hardee Co. public library. The library has The Herald-Advocate newspaper on
microfilm. I will also look for Marvin, Jr.'s obit.

I was always told that Mr. Marvin Platt had a bakery. He had a couple of
fingers missing on one hand, and I always heard that he lost the fingers
cutting bread in the bakery. I also remember that he could sing the tenor
line of the old hymns. One of his favorite was "The Old Rugged Cross." I
began playing the piano on Sunday evenings when I was only about 10 years
old. Sometimes they had an evening when people could choose their favorite
hymn, and I remember that he always requested that song, and that he would
sing the tenor part of the refrain. His wife, Mrs. Cordia Platt, was a very
sweet person. She taught the small children in Sunday School.

There may be an old city directory in the library that would give the name
and location of the bakery. It will probably be a couple of weeks before I
get back to the library because I am going out of town a few days.

I had a couple of hours between meetings, so I dropped by the library and
found Mr. Platt's obit. This is from the September 23, 1971 "The
Herald-Advocate," Wauchula, FL page 7-B

"Marvin H. Platt, 84, of the Lake Dale Community died Friday at Avon Park.
A native of ARcadia he had lived here for 40 years, and was a deacon at the
Lake Dale Baptist Church.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Cordie Branning Platt; a daughter, Mrs. Yvon
Peele of Wauchula, and a son, Marvin H. Platt Jr. of Wauchula.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Lake Dale Baptist Church
with the Rev. G. W. Martin and Rev. J. H. Rhoden officiating. Burial was in
the Lake Dale Cemetery."

If you would like a copy, let me know and I'll be glad to mail it to you.

Sincerely,
Teresa

Christopher

I don't have a death date for Florence/Florissa Helen Sumner in my files.
Did I tell you that she died in 1986?? Also, I show her birthdate as
12/14/1895, not the 2/19/1884 that you show. I will look at Mt Zion next
time we are up that way to see if she is there and what her tombstone says.
My info came from cousins, so is certainly open to question.

Kathy,

I am extremely slow but very persistant. Sorry for the delay but I did want to get back to you on this information. This is what I found:

There are two potential matches in the MT. Zion Cemetery records:

Florence H. Sunmer b.2/19/1884 d.10/7/1971
and
Helen Sumner b.12/14/1895 d.??????

This was my other source, if I said you gave me the July 1986 I was incorrect, I got it from the record below.

Social Security records show the following:
HELEN SUMNER
14 Dec 1895
Jul 1986 33705
Last Residence (St Petersburg, Pinellas, FL)
Last Benefit (No Location Given)
SS# 263-10-3390
Issued: Florida (Before 1951)

Let me know what your think.
