Hi Christopher,
I was looking for some information on Vedah Hartline Platt in the Social Security Death Index when I ran into your entry for Marshall N Platt. This family is very personal to me as Vedah and her husband Marhsall were my first cousin's maternal Grandparents. I then took a look at your web site, (btw, great job!) and found Clifton's information, but you left off Marshall N Platt and my Aunt Leta Marlene Platt Noles. You've also spelled Mrs. Platt's first name wrong. It's not Vedeah Platt it was VEDAH Platt. I knew her quite well and I know that during my growing up years she worked behind the counter for the US Postal Service in Plant City, Hillsborough Co, FL. I also know that she divorced Marshall either before I was born in 1956 or in my young childhood days. I can't remember and I'm not about to bring back bad memories for my aunt. Mrs. Platt died in Inverness, Citrus Co, FL. That's confirmed. I think she died at my Uncle Charles Noles and Aunt Marlene's home as they were taking care of her about the time that she died. Btw, Aunt Marlene was born August 22, 1931 in Plant City, Hillsborough Co, Fl and she and Uncle Charles are doing quite well.
There's also one more mistake that you made on your web site, not such a big mistake but one that should be corrected. Under Joshua Platt (abt 1770 to March 1855). Dade City is and has never been in Hernando County, FL. It's technically in Pasco County, FL and is that county's county seat.
As for the meaning of Cracker's when it comes to Floridians, you are correct when you state that there are 3 meanings and that it does vary depending on where you are in Florida. However, I tend to stick to what my paternal Grandmother, Mary Ellen Curington Noles and my Great Aunt Bonnie E Noles Proctor told me. Bonnie was born here in Florida in 1900 and Grandmother was born in 1902. I can remember when I was a small child (and not knowing better) making the comment that I was a Florida Cracker. Boy, did I get chewed out by Aunt Bonnie. As she said, "you're a Sandpiper with sand in your toes, don't ever let me hear you call our family Crackers again." Of course, that was in the 1960s and I've never ever referred to our family as crackers since then. lol Actually, from what I've read in history books and from what my relatives informed me of, Crackers from the beginning of Florida settlement times was due to the sound of the whips being cracked while cattlemen drove their cattle out of the palmetto bushes and other undergrowth. It was also because during the Civil War that was the sound of the whips made while supplies were being transported to the Confederate boys in Georgia. Long trails, dirty work, and as a southern girl worth every mile, every crack.
For your information, my family settled in Sumter county (and boy am I glad to see that someone knows how to spell it correctly), in the middle 1800s. Which makes me a 3rd generation, we hailed from Georiga, Great Great Grandpa Christopher C Hall and his wife Mary came from Georgia. Great Grandmother Frances "Fannie" Elizabeth Hall was born in Oxford, Sumter Co, FL in November 1879 and died in August 1945 in Sarasota, FL. She married "Doc" Lafayette Monroe Noles June 5, 1898 in Sumter Co, FL. Their oldest son, was my Grandfather, Benjamin Gunther Noles. He was born September 8, 1902 in Crystal River. He married Mary Ellen Curington on April 23, 1923. He left Grandmother in 1934, and finally disappeared from all records between August 1941 and August 1945. Grandmother was born October 23, 1902 in Coleman, Sumter Co, FL and died April 17, 1995 in Raleigh, NC.
Grandpa and Grandmother had 3 sons:
1) My Dad, Frederick William Noles - Feb 11, 1925 Sarasota, FL to Sept 19, 1998 in Irving, TX (due to melanoma cancer).
2) Dr. Richard Kenneth Noles, born March 21, 1928 and still living with his wife, Patrica. Their children live mostly in GA but one daughter lives in TX.
3) Charles Francis Noles, born September 11, 1929 in Webster, Sumter Co, FL. He married Leta Marlene Platt on April 1, 1951 in Plant City, Hillsborough Co, FL. Aunt Marlene was born August 22, 1931 in Plant City, FL.
Charles and Marlene have 2 children:
1) Dr. Charles Steven Noles, born March 20, 1958 and is still practicing medicine in Inverness. He is married, and has 2 sons.
2) Elaine Susan Noles, born Jan 17, 1960. She's married and has 3 children (2 girls and a boy).
She teaches 1st grade in Inverness, FL. Her husband Manuel "Manolo" Vilchez-Herrador has his own tiling company in Inverness.
This adds more information to your Platt family. And I have one little favor to ask. Good you please send me a report on Aunt Marlene's family? Just her pedigree would do, but it would be such a nice Christmas present for her and my cousin Elaine.

Thanks ever so much for your web site and I apologize to be so heated in the beginni ng.FONTSTRONGDIV
Sincerely yours,
Mary Noles Triplett
Dade City, FL

PS>> Btw, just how are you related to Aunt Marlene?

My father was raised by Heenan Calhoun Platt of Moore Haven, Florida. My grandmother somehow changed his last name when he was little. He is a "Clemons" by blood. I don't know a whole lot about the family, but what I do know I will be happy to share with you. I do know that Heenan had 4 brothers. Their names are Park, Harmon, Louis and Nathan. He had one sister and her name was Leela. I was young when they passed away, but I do remember my grandfather and my uncle Nathan. They were definetly characters! My grandfather died on Christmas day in 1987 and my uncle Nathan died in 1985 or 1986. My grandfather died from complications due to a car accident. He was 80 when he died. My uncle Nathan died of lung cancer.
My great-grandfather's name was Nathan Silous Platt. My great-grandmother's name was Cinderella Platt. If there's anything else that you would like to know about the family, just let me know. I will do my best to find out for you. Please let me know how you are related to the family.
Write back soon!

Yes, it's definetly the same Platt family! You even corrected my spelling on a few names!
My grandmother is still alive and she still lives in Florida. I spoke to her about you and she said that she knew that there was a few "Tanner's" from Clewiston that are related to the Platt's.Do you have relatives in Clewiston, FL?
Somehow, when my father was little, my grandmother changed my father's name. She says she just started writting Platt on everything. When my father got older he legally had it changed to Platt. So yes, my maiden name is Platt. We lived in Clewiston until I was 8 then we moved to Tn. (my mother's family is from Tn.) I moved back to Florida in 1996 and married my husband in May of 1997 and we moved back to Tn. a year ago. A lot of the Platt's live in Glades county, Florida. I'm not close to the family at all. We feel that they never really accepted my dad as one of them. When my grandfather was alive, things were different, but since his death in 1987 we just don't have anything to do with them. It's kind of a long story!
I do know that a lot of the Platt's are buried in a cemetary in Venice or Venus Florida. I'll get the correct spelling for you. My grandfather is the only one that isn't buried there and he is buried in Ortona cemetary in Glades county. My grandmother says that the cemetary in Venice is not took care of very well.
If you ever decide to visit Florida, you can go to Moore Haven and I can help you get in touch with some people that can tell you everything about the Platt's.
Let me know what births and deaths you need and I'll see what I can do to help you out. I'm sure my grandmother can provide me with a lot of imformation on this!
Tara Smith
P.S. Where do you live now?

Christopher, Sorry I haven't written in a while. I've been busy! I did speak to my grandmother last week. My grandfather, Heenan Calhoun Platt was born October 7,1906 and he died December 25,1987. My grandmother's name is Arline Fritz Platt and she was born July 15,1920. They did not have any children together. He had children from a previous marriage. Two girls. I'll try to get some info. for you on them. We're not close at all. They were always sort of jealous of my dad because my grandpa took up so much time with him. And like I said, my dad is legally a Platt.
About Johnny Platt, grandma says that Johnny's daddy is Buddy- Lewis Blackshire Platt.
This Victoria Platt you've been talkin' to. Ask her if they call her "Vee"
If it is Vee, please send me her e-mail address. I would like to e-mail her myself. If she is who I think she is, then she was married at one time to either my uncle Nathan or his son, Dickie. I'm pretty sure she was married to Dickie. You can tell her if you want, that Tara Platt Smith wants her address. Tell her that I'm married to Timmy Smith from Moore Haven, then she'll figure out who I am.
I'll write you back today or tomorrow with my family's birth dates. Ha! That's sad when you don't even know your own familys birthdays!
Write back soon! Oh, my grandmother told me to give you this phone number. This lady is my grandfather's niece and she can give you any info. on the family that you want! Her name is Welda Wolfenbarger and she lives in Moore Haven as well. Just tell her that I gave you her number. It's 863-946-0127
Hope to hear from you soon!

Greetings,

I hope you do not mind me send you this e-mail, but my cousin told me that you were working on the Platt history. My cousin would be Tara.

My name is Lina Flick. My great-grandfather was Henan Calhoun Platt, whose daughter Mildred Ena Platt was was my grandmother.

I am extremely interested in researching family history, and would love to see what you have put together so far. I would also like to offer my help. I may have information, or contacts that Tara does not have.

I am not sure if she can get in touch with my aunt or not, who is Henan's other daughter, she is in her late 70's now, but knows quite a bit about the Platt family history.

Well I am really not sure what else to say at the moment, so I will close this letter.

Be well and safe,

Lina M. Flick

Platt, Walter Calvin (b. 17 FEB 1884, d. 21 FEB 1964)
Note: The Fort Myers Cemetery office also lists Walter C. PLATT in Block 221 Lot 4 Space 2 in the Garden of Memories. The deed was issued 7-6-64 for spaces 1 & 2. He is buried in space 2, but there is no information about his age. His wife
Mary Emma PLATT died 20 January 1979 at the age of 91, permit #4641. Leo W. Engelhardt Funeral Home was in charge. Walter was a son of Radford and married Mrs. Emma Douglas 30 January 1914 (Lee Co Mrgs 3-162).

I heard back from the Engelhardt Funeral Home and gleaned the following information:

Walter Calvin Platt was born 17 Feb 1884 FL, lived in Immokalee, died 21 Feb 1964 at Clewiston. Father: Radford Platt Mother: Zelphy Rooney. Daughter
Ruby Brannen made arrangements.

Mary Emma Platt was born 3 October 1887 FL, d. 20 Jan 1979. Father: Irwin Conyers Mother: Mary Elizabeth Jacobs.

The date of birth for Walter agrees with the 1917 draft except for the year. These people were not very good historians. (I include my own family members in that statement.)

One thing leads to another so now I will try to get Walter's obituary on my next trip to the library. I did get Flora Mae Williams'

Note from Rootsweb posting:
According to Walter's death certificate, he was a farmer and lived in Immokalee at the time of his death. The death certificate states that he was still married, so apparently Edna was still alive at the time of his death. The informant's name was given as Ruby Brannen, the daughter of Emma Conyer Douglas. His address was listed as 2nd Street B Ave., Immokalee.
