In 1903 this family came to the United States from Denmark. They settled first
near Stuart, Iowa, where the children attended school. Later, part of the family
moved further west where they homesteaded on a farm near Harlem, Montana. During
their time in Montana, the very musical family played for many square dances.
Within a few years they returned to Iowa.

Obituary
Kate R. Parkhurst, 94, of 1499 Office Park Road, West Des Moines,
died of influenza Saturday (13 Dec 1997) at Iowa Methodist Medical
Center. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church,
of which she was a member. Burial will be at Masoninc Cemetery in Des
Moines. Mrs. Parkhurst was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, and lived in
the Des Moines and Mason City areas many years. She was a homemaker.
Surviving are her husband, Fred; two daughters, Carolyn Harbeson and
Marilyn Parkhurst, both of Des Moines; a son, Richard of Coppell,
Texas; a sister, Pearl Groth of Urbandale; four grandchildren; and a
great-grandchild. Friends may call one hour prior to services Tuesday
at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to her church or
the Stroke Resourse Center at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.
Arrangements are being handled by Westover Funeral Home.

From Memorial Service Program for Alton O. Groth:
Alton Orien Groth, the son of Andrew A. Groth and Inga M. Eidahl
Groth, was born in St. Ansgar, IA, on December 29, 1905. He died at
Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, on May 3, 1987, at the age
of 81 years, 4 months and 4 days.
Alton was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Church in St.
Ansgar, IA, and became a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Des Moines,
on April 13, 1930.
On June 30, 1929, he was united in marriage to Pearle Louise
Sorenson, and to this marriage two daughters were born.
Alton graduated from the University of Iowa with B.A. and M.S.
degrees. He had also been a member of the university band and
orchestra and minored in piano. He came to Des Moines in 1927 where
he was employed as an Actuary by the Equitable of Iowa. He was to
become the Vice President and Actuary.
Alton had been Consulting Actuary for the Des Moines Teachers
Retirement System; Des Moines Police, Firefighters and Water Works.
He also had been an Actuary for the Railroad Retirement Commission in
Washington, D.C. He served as a member of the Board of Directors and
Board of Pensions of the Lutheran Church in America; the Executive
Board and Finance Committees of the Iowa Synod; a trustee and
president of Wesley Acres Retirement Home; the Board of Iowa Lutheran
Hospital and the Board of Directors of the Des Moines Civic Music
Association. He also was a member of the Des Moines Club, the Des
Moines Golf and Country Club, and Moingona Masonic Lodge.
Alton was a very active and faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church,
having served on the Church Council, and in many other capacities,
most recently on the New Organ Committee, of which he was the
chairman of finances.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and, last December, his
brother, Irling A. Groth, of Des Moines.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Pearle; two daughters,
Barbara Cowles, of Des Moines; and Carole Olson of St. Paul,
Minnesota; four grandchildren and a great number of friends.

From Funeral Program: Louise, daughter of Laurids (sic) and Jensene
Marie Jensen Sorensen, was born in Aalborg, Denmark on August 28,
1894. She was baptized in the Danish Lutheran Church in the town
where she was born. In 1904 she came to the United States with her
family and settled first in Stuart, Iowa where she attended school.
Later the family moved out west where they homesteaded on a farm near
Harlem, Montana. During their time in Montana Louise joined the rest
of her very musical family to play for many square dances. After
three years they returned to Iowa and resided on a farm south of Coon
Rapids. On June 4, 1919 she was united in marriage with Rasmus
Nielsen. After their marriage they lived south of Coon Rapids where
they had a dairy farm and sold milk in town. In 1936 they moved to a
farm near Bayard, Iowa where they lived until 1962 when they retired
and moved to Aududon. Her husband died on March 6, 1981. Louise liked
gardening and flowers and loved to sing and play the piano.
Louise enjoyed good health until a short time before her death on

She was 92 years, 4 months, and 25 days old.
Besides her husband, Louise was preceded in death by her parents; by
a son, Paul; and by the following brothers and sisters: Theodore,
Chris, Morris, and Dorothy (Mrs. Paul Kinnick).
Louise is survived by her children and their spouses: Karl Nielsen
and his wife, Mary Jo, of Bayard; Howard Nielsen and his wife, Dotty,
of Bellevue, Nebraska; Winona and her husband, Ralph Huffman, of
Audubon; Marie Nielsen, of Audubon; Darrell Nielsen and his wife,
Marjorie, of Glidden; Anna Mae and her husband, Jerry Vincent, of
Jefferson; and Judy and her husband, Dave Marques, of Westminister,
Colorado; by 14 grandchildren; by 18 great-grandchildren; by a
daughter-in-law, Helen Nielsen, of Coon Rapids, by a sister, Delma
(Mrs. Clyde Luse) of Vista, California; as well as by nieces,
nephews, other relatives and friends.
