Dorothy, daughter of Lauritz Christian and Jensine Marie Nielsen
Sorensen, was born June 26, 1887, at Aalborg, Denmark. In 1903, she
came with her family to the United States where they settled in
Greenfield, Adair County, Iowa. On August 12, 1914, she was united in
marriage with Paul H. Kinnick at Greenfield. At that time she became
a citizen of the United States. Dorothy and Paul spent their entire
lives in Coon Rapids, Iowa, except for a short time in Bayard, Iowa.
Paul was with the Iowa Savings Bank and the First National Bank in
Coon Rapids. Dorothy devoted her time to her husband, her children,
and her home. Music was an important part of her life. She played
both the violin and piano, and loved to sing.
Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Gleaner's
Sunday School Class, and participated in the Aid Society and WSCS.
While living in Bayard, she enjoyed the Helping Hand Class of the
Methodist Church.
On July 16, 1975, Dorothy entered the Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home
in Coon Rapids, where she died on Sunday, November 28, 1982, at the
age of 95 years, 5 months, and 2 days.
She was preceded in death by her husband on April 1, 1968, her
parents, one greatgrand-daughter, Appril Eileen Smith, two brothers,
Maurice and Otto Christian Sorensen, and her son-in-law, Leverne
Smith.
She is survived by three children, Leo Millard Kinnick, and his wife,
Ida Marie, of Lenox; Mary Eileen Smith of Coon Rapids; and A. Edward
"Buzz" Kinnick, and his wife, Colleen, of Bayard. Also, she is
survived by 13 grandchildren; 18 grandchildren; two sisters, Delma
Luse, of Vista, California, and Louise Nielsen, of Audubon; many
nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1935 as Salutatorian
(Eileen noted, pleasantly, that Opal Arms moved into town and "took
away" Leo's Valedictorian opportunity - 3 Aug 96). Married (Ida
Marie) 17 Oct 1937. Had Hamburger Stand in Coon Rapids for 6 months.
Worked at Bank in Coon Rapids for 3 months. Milked cows at Rolfe, IA,
for a year and a half.
Went to Lohrville in 1940. Worked for Commercial Savings Bank a year
and a half. Then, worked for Lohrville Savings Bank until 1968. I was
Town Treasurer in Lohrville for 25 years. Sang with Calhoun County
Chorus while in Lohrville; then, the Fort Dodge Civic Glee Club and
Barber Shoppers in Ft. Dodge. Worked for Union Trust and Savings Bank
in Fort Dodge for two years. Then,worked for First National Bank in
Lenox, IA, until I retired in 1983. While there, sang with the
Creston Chorus and with the Barber Shoppers in Tucson for 10 years.
We were "snow birds" and lived in Lenox and Tucson both for three
years 1983-4-5. Moved into current home in Tucson in 1986 after
selling the Lohrville house. Have not been here more than 10 years.
Will be 80 years old March 21, 1997. I have just about given up
singing but enjoy yard work and gardening and little Poodle, Tina.
She had three adorable black puppies this spring which we kept for
6-7-8 weeks. Hated to sell them. May try that again but it was
stressful at times. She had them at 1:00 in the morning and they
weighed 6 oz. each.
