Lewis Erwin Garrison Family

For this month’s issue the Lewis Erwin Garrison family was uncovered in the Mary Alma Kay files. Lewis’ parents are believed to be Louis and Jemima Garrison. We have no information on either of them at this time. So we will begin with Lewis Erwin Garrison. Perhaps someone will recognize or possibly find a missing link into their own ancestry.

Lewis Erwin Garrison was born January 28, 1842 in Greensburg, Indiana. It is not known if he had any siblings. Lewis served in the Union Army during the Civil War as 1st Sergeant, Company G, 16th Illinois Infantry from 1861 to 1865. Lewis was promoted to a Lieutenancy for bravery on the field of battle. Unfortunately, he suffered from heart disease after leaving the Union Army in 1865.

Lewis married Lucinda Marian Blodgett on February 4, 1864 and together it is believed they had 9 children. Lucinda was born on June 3, 1843. One of the researchers, David Eggleston from New Milford New Jersey, stated his grandmother, Grace, was Lewis and Lucinda’s 9th child. The children are listed as follows: Clinton, Daniel, Walter, Dwayne, Gilbert, three more children, names unknown, and finally Grace. Other than Grace, the order of the children is not known.

From Carthage, Illinois, the Garrison’s moved to Keokuk in the fall of 1880. Lewis was the Lee County coroner in 1898 and 1899. They moved to St. Louis, Missouri around the turn of the century; Lucinda passed away on January 31, 1901 in St. Louis; and was brought back to Keokuk for burial. Lewis was too ill from heart disease to accompany his wife’s remains to Keokuk for burial. He was never able to rally from the attack and gradually failed until his death on Tuesday morning at 5 o’clock on August 13, 1901. His remains were also returned to Keokuk and taken to the home of his son, Clinton Everett Garrison living at that time at 1409 Timea St, Keokuk. The funeral was handled by Bellknap Post G. A. R. and was held at his son’s residence. Lewis was 59 years of age. The record shows Lucinda was buried in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk, Block O, Lot 183. It is presumed Lewis is also buried in Oakland Cemetery, but it has not been confirmed if he is buried with his wife, or in another section of Oakland Cemetery.

It is believed Clinton Everett Garrison is the eldest of the 9 children of Lewis and Lucinda. Clinton was born on March 30, 1868 in Beardstown, Illinois. At the age of 13 he and his family moved to Keokuk. A marriage to Helen E. Parker is listed, with a date of February 10, 1886, but no other information is known. If Clinton was married to Helen E Parker, it would have been his first marriage, and a brief one, as Clinton married Katherine Gallagher in Keokuk on October 9, 1889. In both Clinton and Katherine’s obituaries, six children are listed; three sons, all of Keokuk, and three daughters, of whom four survive. A son (name unknown) and a daughter (Gertrude) died in infancy. The four children are Raymond Jr, Walter, Hazel and Helen. Clinton was a machinist affiliated with the Industrial Supply Company for many years and a member of the Modern Woodman of American as well as the National Association Power Engineers. Clinton was affiliated with St. John’s Episcopalian church in Keokuk. Clinton died on September 15, 1929, having been hospitalized since August 30 with heart trouble. Funeral services were held in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry (Hazel) Bowden at 1112 Exchange Street, Keokuk. He is buried with his third wife Jessie Mabel Cobb Booth in Oakland Cemetery, Block 24, Lot 22. There are no gravestones marking the site. Information was gathered from the death certificates of Clinton and Jessie.

Although there is no mention, it is presumed Clinton and Katherine divorced sometime prior to 1909 since there is a record of Clinton’s third marriage to Jessie Mabel Cobb Booth around that time. Jessie died in 1925, and Katherine passed away in 1945.

Katherine Ann Gallagher was born in County Galway, Ireland, November 26, 1866, the oldest daughter of Edward and Bridget Cahill Gallagher. As an infant, she was brought to this country by an aunt, Mrs. Katherine Brady, and made her home in Southern Indiana until she reached young womanhood, and on October 9, 1889 married Clinton Everett Garrison, and together had six children, two died in infancy. Katherine had a sister Mrs. Dellia Huber who resided in Cannellton, Indiana, and a half-sister and half-brother residing in Keokuk.

Katherine was the first charter member of Eureka Camp No. 7, Royal Neighbors of America and at one time served as an officer in the organization. She was affiliated with the First Congregation church for more than 40 years and attended there until she became an invalid in 1935. Katherine died at Graham Hospital at 10:15 P.M. on March 16, 1945 after being hospitalized since November 1 the previous year. According to the obituary, funeral services were held at Greaves Mortuary and burial was in Golden Point Cemetery, north of Hamilton, Illinois. There is a discrepancy however because there is a tombstone at Oak Grove Cemetery, located 4 ½ miles north of Hamilton, Illinois. In the notes reads the following: Lot owner was Mrs. Martin (Helen E Garrison, Katherine’s daughter) Durant, John Martin Durant, Illinois, Company B 54 Ammo TN WWI CAC December 16, 1894 – March 16 1963; Katherine A Garrison, born County Galway, Ireland, November 26, 1866 – died Keokuk, Iowa March 16, 1945, Sonora Township, Hancock County, IL. Perhaps Oak Grove and Golden Point Cemeteries are one in the same, but has not been confirmed at this time.

Jessie Cobb Booth was born on May 16, 1870 in Keokuk, IA to the parents of Edgar and Mary Maddox Cobb, and died on January 4, 1925, and buried in Oakland Cemetery according to the death certificates of Clinton and Jessie.

Raymond E Garrison SR is believed to be the first born of Clinton Everett and Katherine Gallagher Garrison. Raymond was born on July 5, 1890, and died August 19, 1980. There are two marriages listed in the records, but it is unknown in what order they are. It is likely the first marriage is to Ann J, born February 5, 1896 and died December 23, 1921; and the second to Lois May, who was born August 19, 1896 and died April 14, 1995. The records indicate Raymond and Lois May are buried in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk, Block 30, Lot 80, Row 14.

The order of the children is unknown, but it is believed Raymond was the first-born. A child born to Clinton and Katherine was a boy born and died on October 6, 1894. Other children of Clinton and Katherine listed are: Walter L, Hazel, Helen, and Gertrude. The only information on Walter is the name of his wife, Mattie and was living in Keokuk in 1929 when his father died; Walter is buried in Frazee Cemetery, Clark County, MO. Hazel married Henry F. Bowden and was also living in Keokuk in 1929. Helen married Martin John Durant who was born December 16, 1894, and died March 16, 1963. Helen and Martin had two sons, John and Gerald. Late in life Helen was living in a nursing home in Newton, IA, near her son Gerald. Gertrude Garrison died in infancy.
Raymond Sr and Ann J. Garrison had a son Raymond Jr born December 14, 1914 and died on March 3, 1981. Raymond Jr married Dorothy B Seither, born December 23, 1921 and died June 8, 1990. The tombstone also shows Ann J, Raymond Jr’s mother, was buried with Raymond and Dorothy in Oakland Cemetery, Keokuk, Block B, Lot 35.

There is no information other than a name for the rest of the children of Lewis and Lucinda Blodgett Garrison, with the exception of Grace Garrison. Daniel, Walter, Dwayne, and Gilbert, three more children, then Grace being the ninth child.

Grace Demeris Garrison was born on August 1st, 1884 in Keokuk, Lee County, IA. Grace married George “Grant” Eggleston born September 25, 1884 in Olney, Richland County, Illinois. He died June 28, 1949 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.
Grace died August 13, 1965 in Kansas City, Jackson County. The names of any
children Grace and George had are unknown, but there was a grandson David Eggleston who provided some of the information on this family.
