MAK Project _ Bryant, Clyde Leroy "Lee"

This month’s feature family comes from the Personal Ancestral Files of the Bryant-Reeves Family Tree.  The obituary of Clyde LeRoy “Lee” Bryant was found in the notes section of his family tree and is quite inspiring.  In the notes of Lee’s Uncle, Marion Bryant was a Children’s Obituary of two of his children.  Perhaps you are related to this family, or maybe recognize some of the names.

                       'LEE' BRYANT - November 19, 1981    

A funeral for Clyde LeRoy "Lee" Bryant, 51, of Iowa City and formerly of Keokuk, who died Thursday at the University of Iowa Hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Dejong Funeral Home with Rev. A. H. Bauch, officiating.  Burial will be in the Frazee Cemetery near Wayland, Missouri.  Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday and the family will meet with friends from 7-9. 

Bryant taught himself piano at the School of the blind at Vinton, Iowa and spent most of his life playing piano and organ locally and nationwide.  He played over the radio station, at supper clubs, made an appearance at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair.  At the time of his death, he was employed by the University Hospital Radiology Department.  He attended the St. Paul United Church of Christ at Keokuk.  A member of the Association of Musicians Guild and Iowa Commission of the blind, he received awards from many local area, state and national organizations. 

He was born May 29, 1930 at Alexandria, Missouri the son of Arie Clyde and Della Mae Bennett Bryant.

Survivors include a son and a daughter, four sisters, Mrs. Floyd (Izola) Starr and Mrs. Leonard (Gladys) Reeves of Keokuk.  Mrs. Charles (Dorothy) Slaughter Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Mrs. Dale (Nellie) Mills of La Feria, Texas.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Services for former Keokuk residence C. Lee Bryant of Iowa City, who died in University Hospital there Thursday, are pending at the DeJong Funeral Home.

 CHILDREN OBITUARY:  Gazette Herald, Kahoka, Missouri, February 22, 1920    BRYANT--Two daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Bryant are dead, one Louise, 11 months old, died Sunday and was buried in the Frazee Cemetery Tuesday and on returning home, Bessie, three year old was dead, both from pneumonia, the father, mother and two boys are dangerously sick with the dreaded disease. Tender hands have cared well for them.  But still, it is hard to approach a subject so extremely sad.  Such news breaks upon a community, causing a sad effect.  What home in our city is not bowed down chilling wintry breath and sorrow as the sad news broke forth upon our people, and in the fullness of our hearts would offer words of consolation.  Only we know how utterly futile all efforts at sympathy are on such occasions.  But such announcements awaken thoughts within us, all showing how tender is the thread of life that we hold so dear.  "For we know not what a day will bring forth".  Bessie will be buried Thursday by the side of her sister.
