Pg.116: Know all Men by these Presents, That we, John H. Duncan & John J. Ayres are held and firmly bound unto Littleton W. Tazewell Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, in the just and full sum of one hundred and fifty dollars, to which payment, well and truly to be made, ... by these presents. Sealed with our Seals, and dated this 12th day of November one thousand eight hundred and thirty four.
The condition of this obligation is such, That whereas there is a Marriage shortly intended to be had and solemnized between the above bound James Duncan and Elizabeth Garrison (ward of sd Jno. J. Ayres), Now THEREFORE, If there be no lawful cause to obstruct said Marriage, then the above Obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.

Pg.514: Will of Nathaniel (X) Bird Sr., of Accomack Co., 5 Dec. 1778; to my son Jacob Bird a certain parcel or tract of land that the widdow Harmon now lives on and Joseph Tunnell's wife which suth? ready lease lands of by a line of marked trees, beg. at a line that parts Levin Gail? and William Kelley and adjoins Williams line to Richard Kellys line then to Isaiah Johnson and along the said of Isaiah Johnson's line to a small marked line & from that small line and by a line of marked trees that I marked to Levin Gails line and along Levin Gail's line to the first boundery the same by estimation to be 60 acres more or less, and my riding sadle. To my brother Solomon Bird all that parcell of land that he now has in possession lying on the west side of a small ditch that the said Solomon cut to him and his heirs for ever. To my daughter Sarah Bird during her single life 1/3 part of the land that I now live upon and 1/3 of my old apple orchard and the house that I now live in provided she do not make any waste of the timber only for the use of the land and she is not to lease nor sell the same to no body but her brother Nathaniel Bird only to make crops or have crops made for her own use. I give my daughter Sarah Bird one bed and furniture bedstead mattres, called hers and one cow and yearling, one linen? wheel and one chest called hers. To my daughter Rachell Johnson one bed and furniture and one cow and calf. To my granddaughter Elizabeth Bird dau. of Nathaniel Bird one cow and calf. To my daughter Charity Rigin one large table that was called her mothers. To my son Nathaniel Bird the remainder of my land that I have not given away and one horse, bridle and sadle called his own. The remainder equally divided between my daughter Sarah Bird and Rachiel Johnson and my granddau. Charity Regin. Appoint my son Nathaniel Bird exec. Wit. Henry Fletcher, Joseph Smith, Charles Broadwater, Oliver (X) Bell, Nathan (X) Bird. At court Feb. 29, 1780, will proved by oaths of Oliver Bell and Charles Broadwater, witnesses; and Nathaniel Bird heirs at law to the testation being present and having nothing to object on the motion of the said Nathaniel taking oath and giving William Andrews and James Duncan for his security who entered into bond for that purpose, certificate is granted him for obtaining a probate.

Pg.259-60: Will of John Dix of Accomack Co., 4 Dec. 1793; to my negro girl Sarah her freedom when she arrives at age of 21. Lend my wife all my estate real and personal except my wearing apparel and a colt so long as she continues to be my widow, and she is likewise to school my son James without any caf?ience to him; and after death or marriage my land is to go to my son James M. Dix and the remainder of my estate to be equally divided between my said son and my daughter Mary Poulson. To my son James Milby Dix all my wearing apparel and a colt which is to be raised out of estate. To my daughter Mary Poulson (if my son James should die under lawful age without heirs lawfully begoten of his body) my whole estate real and personal. Appoint my wife executrix and Jno. Poulson and Jno. Teackle, Mercts., executors. Wit. Parker Barnes, Betsey Copis. At court Dec. 29, 1795, the will proved on oaths of Parker Barnes and Betsey Copes witnesses, and on motion of Anne Dix taking oath and giving John Burton & Charles Stockly security, certificate granted her to obtain probate. Walliss? and? during his natural life provided James should have a lawfull heir, then I give the land to the heir, otherwise I give the land to my grandson Nathaniel Conquest and his heirs forever. I lend to the said James Conquest 50 acres adj. Daniel and Brodas? line? ... and if he has no heirs, I give the land to (bottom line too dark) Conquest. To Nathaniel Conquest the residue of my swamp track lying next? the said James? land & Isaac Warners land. Lend to my son Rchd? Conquest the residue of my lands for his life, then to my grandson William Conquest. Give my daughters Tabitha and Sarah Conquest homes where they now live during their single lifes. To my son Richard Conquest one negro man Stephen, negro Thomas, Nanny? and James. Made about 10 o'clock on Saturday, 26 Aug. 1848, died following Sunday at 2 o'clock am. 31 Aug. 1848, Outen Tull, Thos. E. Marshall. Presented for probate 25 Sept. 1848. Issue summons against the children of Edward Matthews, to appear on 1st Nov. Court to contest same if they please. Noah Duncan, Charlotte Duncan and James Duncan a part of the next of kin of said Edmund C. Duncan are not citizens of this commonwealth, they to appear 1st Nov. court to contest will if they choose. Copy to be published in one of papers of City of Norfolk. Court held 25 Dec. 1848. Selby appointed exec., securities William C. Slocomb and Jno. Henderson.

Y-594: 4 April 1807, Caleb Duncan of VA to Elizabeth Purnell of MD, that Thomas Dunkin Senr. decd. by will 13 April 1790 devised to his wife Mary a tract called "Holly Grove"; that Mary wife of said Thomas by her will of 13 Oct. 1794 devised to her son Caleb Dunkin, party to this indenture, the said tract called "Holly Grove" and that Caleb executed a bond dated 28 Feb. 1798 to convey "Holly Grove" to John Stewart which was assigned by said John to Henry White who assigned to Ananias Bradford who assigned to Elizabeth Purnell; now Caleb Dunkin for £5.5 current money of MD conveys to Elizabeth Purnell the tract called "Holly Grove" in Worcester Co. in the neighbourhood of Liberty Town, 14-1/2 acres more or less; wit. John Davis, Nixon Davis.

Pg.223-4, Marshall Co. ELIJAH C. DYCUS, MD, now among the pioneers of Marshall Co., is a son of John and Nancy (Isaacs) Dycus; both parents natives of KY, both born in 1797. They removed to Edmonson Co. to the Purchase in 1830, and that year settled near the village of Briensburg, Marshall Co. John Dycus was a farmer and civil officer, and died when about 47 years old. His widow survived him many years, and died in 1877. Dr. E.C. Dycus is the 3rd child of a family of 11 born to these parents. He was born in 1820 in Hart Co. KY, and was age 10 when the father came to Marshall Co., then Calloway. ... Dr. Dycus began his practice in 1846 ... Dr. Dycus was married in New Providence [Montgomery Co.], TN, in 1849, to Miss Atlanta G. Duncan, dau. of James W. and Ann Duncan, of (MAD: Accomack Co.) VA. They have a family of seven children: Francesca J., John W., Ella C., Ann Eliza, Emmett C., Emma G. and Mary A. Dycus. ...

Pg.906-7, Shelby Co., Black Creek Twp: LEVIN DUNCAN (Farmer, Post-office, Shelbyville). At the age of 18 Mr. Duncan started out for himself, ... However, in the meantime, in 1836, he came to Shelby county, and entered land within a short distance from where he now resides. .... Mr. Duncan himself is a native of Maryland, born in Worcester Co. [MD], July 31, 1814, and was a son of Milby and Sarah (White) Duncan. His father was a farmer by occupation and the son remained on the farm until he was 18 years of age, when he started out for himself, as stated above.
