1919 "Sketches of TN Pioneer Baptist Preachers" by J.J. Burnett (from Evelyn Sigler 1985 & 1986)
      Pg.311: Martin V. Kitzmiller, b. in Washington Co. TN Jan. 25, 1824, son of Henry and Elizabeth (Carr) Kitzmiller and grandson of Martin and Mary Kitzmiller, who came from PA and settled in Washington Co. TN about 1800. His maternal grandmother was Mary DeVault ... was a minister in the Holston Assn. Married (1) Miss Mary Crouch (2) Melvina Lightbourn, daughter of James Lightbourn "of the West Indies". Went to IL before the Civil War. Was postmaster at Girard, IL. Died at Girard IL at 81. He had two living sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Duncan, now 81 years old, and Mrs. John Robertson, 77 years old. Dr. R.C. Kitzmiller of Fordtown, TN, his only surviving brother.
      Pg.318: Tidence Lane, first minister to preach regularly to a TN congregation. Son of Richard and Sarah Lane, was born in MD near Baltimore, August 31, 1724. He was a gs of Dutton Lane and Pretitia Tidings, and a great-grandson of Major Samuel Lane, an officer in the King's service in the Province of Maryland, in 1680. He was an older brother of Dutton Lane, a pioneer preacher in VA. He was the father of Lt. Isaac Lane, who, under Col. Sevier, performed patriotic service at the battle of King's Mountain. Isaac Lane in 1802 gave the land on which was built the meeting house of the first Baptist church organized in Claiborne Co. TN, the church at Big Spring (now Springdale).
            Tidence Lane's parents moved to VA and thence to NC where Tidence grew to manhood, and where he married Esther Bibbin (or Bibber) May 9, 1743. Converted by Shubael Stearns. Served as pastor at Buffalo Ridge, Washington Co. TN, 1779. After 4 or 5 years in the "Holston country" Tidence Lane moved into what in now Hamblen [Grainger] Co. Tidence d. Jan 30, 1806.
      Pg.388: Jonathan Mulkey Sr. pioneer of 1775 and first preacher on TN soil. Buried in the Cemetery at Buffalo Ridge, Washington Co. TN; b. Oct. 16, 1752 VA, d. Sept. 5, 1826; Welsh, f. Philip Mulkey. Settled in Carter's Valley near Rogersville 1775. In fall had to abandon farms because of Cherokee invasion. The families below the North Fork of the Holston recrossed the stream and the women and children conducted as far as present Wythe Co. VA. Son Isaac was Bap. preacher. Isaac's son, Philip Mulkey was Bap. preacher, ggs of the elder Philip Mulkey.

      Pg.1332: Josiah C. Duncan, d. Knoxville [Knox Co. TN] Aug. 1, 1911, b. Cumberland Co. VA 1840. Was a telegrapher, served in the War Between the States, organized and established the East Tennessee Telephone Co. at Knoxville. Married Mrs. Fannie J. Brooks, dau. of Gen. Joseph A. Brooks. Had 4 sons. (MAD: 1860 Washington Co. TN)

1887 "History of TN; East TN" by Goodspeed (FHL book 976.8 H2ha Vol.2)
      Pg.979, Bradley Co.: John Richey was born in Blount Co. Nov. 9, 1830, the son of Eli and Nancy (Duncan) Richey. They were of Scotch and Irish descent. The father was born in Mecklenburg Co. NC about 1795 and died in Bradley Co. TN in 1857. The mother was born in Washington Co. TN about 1801 and died in Bradley Co. in Feb. 1863. The parents were married in Washington Co. about 1816. Soon after their marriage they moved to Blount Co., and lived there till 1849, at which time they came to Bradley Co., and settled where our subject now lives, where they spent the remainder of their days. The father was an influential citizen, and quite a successful planter; in 1855-56 he represented Bradley Co. in the State Legislature; he was a stanch Democrat and of the Presbyterian persuasion, but not a member of the church. The mother was a worthy and strict member of the Seceders Church. Our subject is the 6th of 8 children. ...
      Pg.1117: Anderson Co. S.L. Moore, a substantial farmer of Anderson Co., was born Dec. 30, 1838, the son of Samuel and Lourania (Duncan) Moore. The father was born in Rutherford Co. N.C. in 1798 and came to TN about 1813, settling in Anderson Co. where he engaged in farming. He served as trustee of the county, and died in 1877. The mother was born in Washington Co. TN, Feb. 4, 1807, and died August 26, 1857. Our subject was reared on the farm and attended neighboring schools and Union Academy, at Clinton. ... served as magistrate and was chairman of county court for 3 years. In 1860 he married Marie J. Longmire of Anderson Co., who was born in 1840 and is the daughter of R.M. Longmire (deceased). Three of the 13 children born to them are deceased. Both our subject and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.

      Pg.251: JAMES W. DUNCAN ... was born in Washington Co. TN, July 4, 1832, and was a son of James Duncan, who is also supposed to have been a native of Tennessee. He in turn was a son of Joseph Duncan, who was a pioneer farmer of that State and spent his last years in Washington County, where he cleared a farm from the wilderness. He was a soldier of the Revolution, and was a pensioner during the latter part of his life.
            The father of our subject grew to maturity in his native county, and began his career as a farmer on the old homestead that was his birthplace, a part of which he inherited , and he bought the remainder of the other heirs to the estate. He resided thereon many years, actively engaged in agriculture, but in 1856 he came to Illinois to spend his last days with his children, and his life was brought to a close in the home of our subject near Girard. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Sarah Hunt, died at the home of their daughter near Sulphur Springs, Macoupin County.
            He of whom these lines are a brief biographical record ... remained with his parents until he was twenty-one. ... When he attained his majority he came to Illinois .... March 25, 1861, was the date of the marriage of Mr. Duncan with Abigail Proffitt, a native of Tennessee ....
            Mrs. Duncan's father, Daniel B. Proffitt, was a native of the same Tennessee county in which his daughter was born. He was a son of John Proffitt, who is also thought to have been born in that county. He carried on his business as a farmer there, improved a farm, and continued to live in that county until his demise. The maiden name of his wife was Mollie Barnes, and she was a life-long resident of Tennessee.
            Daniel B. Proffitt was reared and married in the county of his nativity. He inherited a part of his father's old homestead, and bought the interest of the other heirs in it. He made it his home until 1854, and then came to Illinois, ... His widow spent her last years with her daughter, Mrs. Duncan. Her maiden name was Sarah Range, and she was born in Washington Co. TN, a daughter of John and Abigail Range.
            Our subject passed away November 24, 1889. ... His wife also belonged to that church.
      Pg.277: JOHN WESLEY DUNCAN ... having been born October 26, 1865, .... James Duncan, paternal grandfather of our subject, is thought to have been born in Virginia. For many years his home was in Washington Co. TN, and there his son James was born and reared. The latter began his lifework as a school-teacher, but ... took up farming. He had come to this county .... He died there in 1888. He left a widow and three children, John Wesley, Joseph B. and James T. The widow still occupies the homestead. She bore the maiden name of Abigail Proffitt. She was born in Washington Co. TN, and is a daughter of Daniel and Sarah Proffitt, pioneers of this county. Grandfather Duncan came hither after the death of his wife and spent his last days with his son James, dying about 1863.

      Pg.1107, Greene Co., White Hall, Hotels: The Commercial hotel ... The present landlord, Thomas Duncan, took the house in Aug., 1882, ... Thomas Duncan, was born at Jonesboro [Washington Co.], Eastern TN, March 1, 1821. He is a son of James and Sarah (Hunt) Duncan, both natives of TN. He lived with his parents until age 25, engaged in farming with his father. In 1856 he moved to this state and bought land near Girard, Macoupin Co., farmed nine years, then sold farm and engaged in grocery business at Girard 11 years, then embarked in hotel business there, taking charge of Enterprise hotel for three years; then White Hall & took charge of Commercial hotel. Married Aug. 7, 1856, to Elizabeth B. Kitzmiller, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Carr) Kitzmiller. (MAD: See Greene Co. IL for children)

      Pg.321: Mowequa Twp, Illinois Patrons: MARY C. DUNCAN, residence P.O. Mowequa, wife of N. Francis Duncan, lumber dealer; born Washington Co. TN, arrived Shelby Co. IL 1867.
      Pg.869: NATHAN FRANCIS. In September 1865 Mr. Francis married in Macoupin Co. Mary C. Duncan, born near Jonesboro, Washington Co. TN, February 24, 1844, a daughter of Joseph and Susannah C. (DeVault) Duncan. Joseph Duncan was born February 27, 1817 near Jonesboro, Washington Co. TN, and moved to Illinois in the fall of 1851, settling in Jacksonville and later buying a farm near Fayette, Greene Co., on which he resided only a few years. He then purchased a farm near Moweaqua in Shelby Co., where he lived until locating in the city where he became Senior Deacon of the Baptist Church. After the death of his wife, he made his home with his daughter Mrs. Nathan Francis until his own death occurred March 30, 1905, when over 88 years of age. In 1842 he was married to Susannah C. DeVault and this union lasted about 57 years, her death occurring at the family home in Moweaqua, February 1, 1899, when she was nearly 75 years old. Joseph and Susannah C. (DeVault) Duncan had 8 children: Martyn, Sarah, Jennie, James, Robert, Joseph, Mary C. and a son who died in infancy.

      Pg.549: Tennessee Township: Joshua Hunt, deceased, was born in Washington Co. TN, in 18--. His parents were natives of England, and from there came to America, where Joshua was reared. He was married to Nancy Bacon, by whom he had 11 children - Abbie, Isaac B., Samuel A., Mary, Sarah, Thomas J., John B., Simon W., Harriet, deceased, Wancy, deceased, Manda C., deceased. Mr. Hunt died in this township. Simon W. Hunt, who was the eighth son of Mr. Joshua Hunt, was born in Washington Co. TN, on the 29th day of May, 1825.       Pg.610: Colchester Township: Thomas J. Bowman ... His father, Daniel N. Bowman, was a native of TN, born in 1814, and who came to McDonough Co. IL, in 1844 ... until his death ... in 1858. He was married in Greene county, in the year 1842, to Margaret Parker, ....
      Pg.652: Lamoine Township: Hugh E. Wear, a native of Washington Co. TN, came with his family to Lamoine township, in May, 1835. He was born in 1789, and in 1825 removed to Monroe Co. TN, where he remained about seven years, when he went to Franklin Co. IL, after which he came to this township. His death occurred in 1873, and he was interred at Scott's church. His wife, whose maiden name was Sarah Duncomb, died in 1858. Mr. Wear was justice of the peace in Lamoine for a number of years. Andrew Wear came at the same time with his father, Hugh, and is still a resident of the township.
      Pg.653: Joseph D. Wear, a son of Hugh, came with his parents to Lamoine township, in 1836. He was born in Washington Co. TN, February 25, 1815, and married January 16, 1838, to Mary B. Downs, who were the parents of 10 children. They are still residents of the township.

      Pg.436-9: JOHN F. STEPHENS. Throughout Washington County ... Ashley Township. Born in East Tennessee in 1823, our subject is the sixth in order of birth among the children of David and Lurana (Duncan) Stephens. Concerning his lineage little is known. It is thought that the Duncans are of PA origin, but the descent of the Stephens family cannot be traced. ... Orphaned by his mother's death when he was only five years of age, his (John F. Stephens') early years were spent in a hard struggle for the necessities of existence. ... Working in the employ of various farmers in youth, Mr. Stephens at the age of 21 commenced to till the soil for himself. The year 1849 witnessed his advent into Illinois, and he then settled in Washington County near his present farm. In 1852 he moved to this place and here he has since resided, ... In 1844 Mr. Stephens was united in marriage with Miss Levina, dau. of Jesse and Margaret (Blair) Ray. ...

      Pg.479: FRANCIS M. DUNCAN ... Pope Co, who resides in township 11, range 6, and was born in Rhea Co. TN in 1842. His father, Russell Duncan, was born in Washington Co. TN in 1817 and is a son of William Duncan, of the same county. The latter was a farmer, as was also his father, Charles Duncan, of North Carolina, who was also a mechanic. Both Charles Duncan and his son William died in Washington Co. TN at quite an advanced age.
            The mother of our subject was Mary T. Rector, of East TN, who after she married Russell Duncan lived in TN until 1870. That year Mr. and Mrs. Duncan removed by team to Jefferson Co. IL, and there the latter died in 1879, aged 56 years, having been the mother of 13 children, 7 sons and six daughters, one of whom died when an infant. Landon R. who was a volunteer in the 2nd TN Infantry of the Federal army, died in KY in the spring of 1862, in his 21st year. Mary Saphrona died in IL at about the age of 28; Sarah M., wife of William Secrest, died in IL; Hiram H. died at his parents' home in 1884; and Ellen E., a single lady, died also at home, in 1892. The names of the living are as follows: Margaret E. in AL; Francis M., the subject of this sketch; Charles Polk, a farmer of Pope Co.; John A., a farmer of Jefferson Co.; William E., also a farmer of Jefferson Co.; Vesta E., wife of Henry Miner, of Jefferson Co.; and Adeline, wife of David Mooney.
            Francis M. Duncan, who was the 2nd child and 2nd son, and is the eldest of the family living, was reared to farm life ... enlisted in 20th year in KY in 5th TN Infantry of Union army, served in ranks over 3 years except when sick in hospital for a short time. His brothers Charles Polk and John A. were also volunteers in the Federal army. These men in TN who entered the Union army knew something of what it cost to be loyal to the Old Flag, and they also knew something of the cost of war. At first Mr. Duncan volunteered at home, but the regiment was soon disbanded and each member of it fled for safety. For some time he was secreted in the mountains with his father and brother; but one night went home to sleep in his bed, and was captured by the rebels and held a prisoner, but only for 2 hours, when he made his escape. The next spring he was one of 33 to cross the mountains and volunteer in KY, and came out of the war without being wounded.
            In April, 1866, our subject was married to Miss Sarah Jane Robbs, of Pope Co., and a daughter of J.L. Robbs. He and his wife then went to MO for a few months, but later returned to this county, and in 1876 bought 40 acres ... Built part of his present dwelling house in fall of 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have buried one infant daughter, Mary L., and have 6 children living, viz: Amanda S., wife of Joseph Gossage, a farmer of Pope Co.; Vesta I., wife of William Gossage, and who has 3 children; William A., a young man of 19 at home; Minnie, a young lady of 18; Elmina, a miss of 14; and Thomas L., 12 years old. Mr. Duncan is a Master Mason, a Simon-pure Republican; he and wife members of Social Brethren Church. ...

      Pg.1110-1, Maries Co.: J. Russell Duncan, a farmer and stock-raiser of Miller Township, Maries County, was born in Gerrard Co. KY, in 1839, and is a son of Alvis and Ann (Palmer) Duncan, the former born in Washington County, East Tenn., and the latter in Garrard Co. KY. The parents were married in Kentucky, where they lived until J. Russell was about five years of age, and then removed to Miller Co. MO, where they settled on a farm, upon which the father died in 1883; his wife is still living at the age of eighty years; both were members of the Baptist Church. J. Russell Duncan was the eldest of a family of six, and was reared in Miller County, his educational advantages being limited. In 1863-64 he served in two different companies in the Enrolled Missouri Militia. In 1864 he married Sarah E., daughter of William H. and Mary C. Scott, the former of whom was born in Kentucky in 1817, (MAD: more on Scott family) .... Mrs. Duncan was born in Laclede Co. MO, and is the mother of twelve children, viz.: Parrie, wife of B.F. Branson; Elben, formerly a teacher, now a farmer; Milford, also a farmer; Alice, who married Thomas Branson; Lillie and Lawrence (twins), Lida, Ella, Ivan, Alvis, Dora (deceased) and Dellard (deceased). Since his marriage Mr. Duncan, has lived on his present farm, which contains 280 acres of the old home place. He owns in all 800 acres, 360 in Miller County and 160 in Pulaski County, besides his farm in Miller Township, Maries County, and 120 acres left him by his father. ... Mason, belongs to Agricultural Whell. Mrs. Duncan is a member of the Baptist Church.

      DUNCAN, JOHN W., merchant, was born August 22, 1843, at Kingston [Roane Co.], Tenn., and died at Gadsden [Etowah Co.]; son of Robert D. and Nancy K. (Liggett) Duncan, the former a native of Tennessee, who removed to Ft. Payne, Ala., at the close of the War of Secession, and engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1878, when he removed to Attalia, and died there, 1885, a Presbyterian; grandson of Robert Duncan, of Tennessee, and of Henry and Elizabeth (Center) Liggett, natives of Virginia who emigrated to Tennessee where they engaged in the hotel business ...; great-grandson of ---- Duncan who went from Virginia to Washington Co. TN, where he was killed by Indians in 1780. ....

His grandfather, Robert Duncan, moved from Washington Co. TN to Roane Co. that State, and died there in 1814. His father, Robert D. Duncan, was born in Roane Co.       Pg.279-80: ANDREW DUNCAN, deceased, an honored pioneer of Louisa Co. IA, was born in Washington Co. TN March 9, 1787. His parents were of Scotch-Irish descent and were strict Presbyterians. He was reared to agricultural pursuits, and removed to Blount Co. TN at an early day. Mr. Duncan was twice married, his first wife being Miss Wallace, by whom he had one son, Joseph, who moved to MO and there died some years ago. He was subsequently united in marriage to Miss Margaret Alexander, a daughter of Francis Alexander and a native of TN. Mrs. Duncan's ancestors were from Scotland, and her birth occurred Nov. 16, 1809. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Duncan, 4 sons and 7 daughters: Janet, the widow of William Allen, resides in Washington Co. IA; Eliza was the wife of Samuel Edmondson, and both are now deceased; Mary A. wedded James Harmon, now living in Columbus City, IA; Francis A. was twice married, his first wife being Miss Mary A. Shaw, and his present wife Miss Ella Easton; he has served in the Assembly and Senate of the Iowa Legislature, is a farmer by occupation, and resides at Columbus Junction. James A. married Miss Melinda Duncan and resides in Columbus City Township; Margaret was the wife of Calvin Ritchie, and both are now dead; Nancy is the wife of Thomas Baird of Wayne Co. IA; Lucinda wedded Frank Moore of Columbus City Twp; Russell married Miss Catherine Johnson, and resides in Wayne Co. IA; Lovinia was the wife of James Atchison, but is now deceased; Samuel married Miss Mary Duncan; he was a soldier of the late war, being a member of Co. C, 11th IA Infantry, and resides in Wayne Co. IA. Mr. Duncan was engaged in farming in TN until 1844, when, in company with his wife and children, he emigrated from their TN home to IA. Several of his daughters were married at the time, and their families, together with a few friends, made up quite a colony. ....
      Pg.533: Hon. FRANCIS ALEXANDER DUNCAN, a prominent farmer and an early settler of Louisa Co., was born in Blount Co. TN, June 9, 1824, and is the son of Andrew and Margaret (Alexander) Duncan.       Pg.581-2: S.H. DUNCAN, a farmer residing on section 22, Columbus City Twp, is a native of Blount Co. TN and a son of George B. and Ann S. Duncan. Accompanied by his family, the father, who was a native of Washington Co. TN, emigrated to Louisa Co. IA in 1843. To him and his excellent wife were born ten children: A.L. who is a guard at the State Penitentiary at Anamosa, IA and who during 4 years of the late war gallantly defended the old flag as a member of Co. C, 11th IA Infantry, participating in all the battles of the regiment until after the battle of Atlanta, where he was wounded; Samuel H., our subject; John C., a railroad employee living at Creston, Iowa; Mary J., wife of Robert Owens of Columbus Junction; Sarah A. who wedded A.H. Parsons, also of Columbus Junction; Elizabeth, wife of W.H. Ogier of Union, James R., a resident farmer of Columbus City Twp; Isabel, wife of R.N. Johnston of Columbus City Twp; Emma who wedded Joseph Weir, a resident of Mitchell Co. KS; Joseph C. whose home is in Rooks Co. of that State. The parents of these children were members of of the Seceders Church, though afterward the father was an Elder in the Reformed Presbyterian Church. ... Mr. Duncan was a Democrat ... Ever a leading and influential citizen in the community where he resided, his death, which occurred in January, 1874, at the age of 58 years, was sincerely mourned by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. His wife died five years later, at the age of 62. ... Samuel H. Duncan, the subject of this sketch, was born in Blount Co. TN, June 30, 1843, but the following autumn came to Louisa Co. with his parents and here he grew to manhood ....

NC Jan. 3, 1814; Willis E. taken to AL very early day, m. there Feb. 10, 1837, to AR 1859. James H. Coleman ... on June 28, 1868, Miss Mary A. Duncan became his wife, her birth occurring in Washington Co. TN February 13, 1854, both her parents William D. and Lydia Duncan being also born in that State, the former a farmer by occupation. James H. Coleman and his wife are parents of James E., William P., George M. and Lydia B. 1863 Civil War. (MAD: William Duncan age 17 b. AR in Ouachita Co. AR census ?)
