      B-212: (blank day and month) 1766, will of Thomas Duncan in Hopewell Twp., Cumberland Co. PA, yeoman, of perfect mind and memory; my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfied; to my wife 1/3 part of all my estate, to wit, money, lands, cattle, moveable, debts, household goods, &c.; to my son William Duncan 5 shillings; to my son John Duncan 5 shillings; to my son Stephen Duncan 5 shillings; to my son David Duncan five shillings; to my son Samuel Duncan 2/3 of what remains after my wife and the other above legacies are taken off; to my son Daniel the remaining 1/3 part after the afsd legacies and bequeathments are taken off; if my wife Jane should not survive or outlive me, then to my sons Daniel Stephen and Samuel that 1/3 part devised to my wife, equally divided; my wife Jane and my son Stephen my sole executors; revoke all former wills. /s/ Thomas Duncan; wit. William Brown, Samuel Coulter, Jno. McCallifler. Produced in court for probate by William Brown and Samuel Coulter, 18 Jan. 1776.

      Pg.241-242: George Pumery of ?? of Letterkenny in the county of Cumberland, Pennsylvania, yeoman, being of advanced age, ... 1st I will & order all my just debts be paid; next, to my beloved wife Margaret one third part during her natural life. I also give to my daughter Elizabeth wife of Charles Boyle ?? shilling sterling. I also give to my daughter Mary wife of Robert Reed one shilling sterling. To my son Thomas Pummery the sum of five shills. Pennsylvania currency. I also give to my daughter Hannah wife of John Wallace one shilling sterling. I also give to my (MAD: does not give relationship) John Pummery one shilling sterling. I also give to my daughter Margaret wife of David Duncan one shilling sterling. I also give to my daughter Isabel wife of John Carmichael one shilling sterling. And I give to my son George Pummery (MAD: too dark) ... residue & remainder of my estate both real & personal (MAD: too dark) appoint my said wife & my said son George Pummery executors, revoking all former & other wills by me heretofore made. 5 October 1773. /s/ George (N his mark) Pumery.       Pg.151: Bond of David S. Runshaw, administrator of David Duncan deceased, and David Wherry, for $5,000, 30 Dec. 1851; David S. Runshaw, administrator as aforesaid has applied to the Orphans' Court of Cumberland Co. for an order for the sale of the Real Estate of said David Duncan decd.; that David S. Runshaw administrator of said David Duncan decd. shall perform his duty. Wit. Sam Martin. Approved by the Court 20 Dec. 1851. (MAD: 1851 could be 1857)
      Pg.177: Bond of David S. Runshaw, administrator of Samuel Duncan deceased, and James A. Kelso, for $3,800, 22 March 1853; David S. Runshaw, administrator of Samuel Duncan deceased has made application to the Orphans' Court of Cumberland Co. for an order for the sale of the Real Estate of said Samuel Duncan decd. for the payment of debts & said court hath granted the same; that David S. 1877 "A History of the First Presbyterian Church of Carlisle, PA" by Conway Wing (FHL film 908,183 and book 974.843/C1 K2w; and from Beverly Allan to Florence Dyess to MAD 11/1984)
      The book contains background information on the first settlement in the area, as well as references to Duncans mentioned ca 1773 as Contributors mentioned in Treasurer's Account Book, and ca 1784-85 as members of the congregation.

1900 "History of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, Middle Spring, PA, 1738-1900" by Belle McKinney Hays Swope (from Donna Cuillard to Florence Dyess to MAD 11/1984)
      This book contains a lot of references to Duncans in this church from 1805 to 1844 and later during the Ministry of Rev. John Moody, D.D., and tombstone inscriptions.

1898 "History of the Big Spring Presbyterian Church, Newville, PA, 1737-1898" (Newton Twp, Cumberland Co. PA) by Gilbert Ernest Swope (from Florence Dyess 5/1985)

      Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
      Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
      The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
      Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

      DIED, At Lancaster [Lancaster Co.], on Friday week, aged about 70 years, the Hon. Thomas Duncan, one of the judges of the Supreme Court of this state. His remains were removed to Carlisle [Cumberland Co.] for internment.

The will of George Pumery dated October 5, 1773, proved 6 November 1776 in Cumberland Co. PA, and recorded in will book B, pg.241, names among other heirs his daughter Margaret, wife of David Duncan.
