BECKHAM CO. OK
Formed 1907 from Roger Mills

Pension Index Card File, alphabetical; of the Veterans Administrative Contact and Administration Services, Admin. Operations Services, 1861-1934; Duff to A-J Duncan (negative FHL film 540,888, some cards very faint); Joseph Duncan to Dunn (positive FHL film 540,889, some cards very dark)
Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

M.L. Duncan. County Commissioner Duncan died shortly after noon last Thursday. ... Funeral services Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. F.W. Ewan, burial was in Prospect Hill cemetery. ... Obituary prepared by Mrs. W.H. Lea and read at the funeral. Following it is a tribute from his neighbor of pioneer days, Dr. Boyakin:
Obituary. Marquis DeLafayette Duncan died at his home in this city, June 25, at 12:30 p.m. after a long and painful illness from a complication of diseases. Mr. Duncan was born Jan. 23, 1830, in Chattanooga, TN [MAD: see Blount Co. TN]; his mother dying in early infancy, he moved with his father and stepmother to AL, where his boyhood days were spent; he moved from that state to the vicinity of St.Joseph, MO [MAD: Buchanan Co. MO], in his early manhood, and was married there in 1851 to Miss Rhoda Williamson, who died a couple of years later leaving to his care an infant son, James B. Duncan, now of Nardin [Kay Co.], OK. About this time he joined the Baptist church ... Soon after the death of his wife he went to Sioux City, IA, and took up a claim, remaining there until his appointment by the government as assistant agent at the Otoe Indiana agency in what is now Marshall Co. KS. ... With two brothers, David and Frank Linn, the latter still a resident of Marysville, as his companions he spent the long, lonely winter of 1854 and 1855 among the Indians at the agency. The following year he returned to IA and, disposing of his property there he went to St. Joseph, MO, ... wagon master, until failing eyesight compelled him to resign when he returned to Marysville, KS, and established a trading post. ... Second sheriff of Marshall Co. In 1856 he sold out his business in Marysville and went to Denver CO until 1861 when he returned to Marysville ... June 1868 he married to Mrs. Sarah A. Miller and they lived on Elm Creek until removing to this city about 14 years ago. Three children: Mrs. Etta Adams of Kirksville, MO; John A. Duncan of this city; another son, Walter, died in infancy.

1922 "Muskogee and northeastern Oklahoma : including the counties of Muskogee, McIntosh, Wagoner, Cheroles, Sequoyah, Adair, Delaware, Mayes, Rogers, Washington, Nowath, Craig, and Ottawa" by John D. Benedict, pub. by S.J. Clarke, 3 vols. (Vol.1-2 from CA State Library, Sutro Branch, SUTRO film M60, reel 2; Vol.3 from FHL film 924,757 item 1, book 11)
Vol.3, Pg.424-426 (Ochelata, Washington Co. OK): JOHN C. DUNCAN. John C. Duncan, a native son of Oklahoma and a member of one of the pioneer families of the state, is numbered among the progressive real estate operators of Ochelata and is a man of keen business discernment and sound judgment, who has attained high standing in commercial circles here. He was born in the southern part of the state, near Fort Smith, on the 20th of April 1859, his parents being John and Elizabeth (Saunders) Duncan, the latter of whom removed from Georgia to Indian Territory with the Cherokee tribe, of which she was a member. The father was also a native of Georgia and became one of the pioneer settlers of Indian Territory, devoting his attention to the cultivation of the soil. Both parents are deceased.
In the Cherokee Male Seminary at Tahlequah, Oklahoma, John C. Duncan acquired his education and upon starting out in life for himself he chose the occupation of farming, which he continued to follow for some time. For the past seventeen years he has been engaged in the real estate business at Ochelata, during which period he has negotiated many important property transfers. His judgment is rarely at fault concerning the value of real estate and its possible rise or diminution in price, and the integrity of his business methods has commended him to the confidence and support of the public.
In 1885 Mr. Duncan was united in marriage to Miss Joanna Rogers, a daughter of Charles and Nancy (Patton) Rogers. Her father, a native of Georgia, came to Indian Territory when a child with his parents who were early pioneers of Oklahoma. He was a son of Captain John Rogers, the first chief of the Cherokees west of the Mississippi river. W.C. Rogers, a brother of Mrs. Duncan, was the last chief of that tribe to rule west of the Mississippi. He was a man of brilliant mind, a forceful writer, and was associated with every progressive movement in the state. He followed the occupation of farming and was also a prominent and successful merchant, owning a chain of stores in Oklahoma. He was a thirty-second degree Mason and stood high in that order, to which all of the male members of the Rogers family belonged. He passed away on the 8th of November, 1917, his demise being the occasion of deep and widespread regret. Mrs. Duncan's mother was a native of Missouri, while Mrs. Duncan's birth occurred on a farm on Bird creek, five miles north of Skiatook (which is a Cherokee word, meaning big man), in Osage county, Oklahoma, on the 3d of February, 1816. She was educated at the Female Seminary at Park Hill, near Tahlequah, from which she was graduated with the class of 1881, and for twenty years she devoted her attention to teaching, becoming well known as an educator. From 1881 until 1883 she had charge of a school in Pawhuska, after which she returned to the Cherokee Nation, where she engaged in teaching until the admission of Oklahoma to statehood. She is a woman of marked intellectual attainments and was the originator of the grade system in this state, which is patterned after the system used in Illinois. Her work in this connection was highly complimented by Hon. John D. Benedict, who served as a member of the first state board of education, under appointment of Governor Haskell. She is greatly interested in civic affairs and is president of the Parent-Teachers Club of Ochelata and also of the local organization of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, and she is likewise identified with the Eastern Star. During the World war she devoted much time to Red Cross work and she is deeply and helpfully interested in church activities, her support being given to those measures and movements which tend to uplift the individual and thus bring a higher moral standard to the community. Mr. Duncan's activities in the real estate field have been a direct agency in the upbuilding and improvement of Ochelata and an analyzation of his life record indicates a ready sagacity and a keen discernment in business projects, as well as a notable wisdom in investment. In all matters of citizenship his influence is cast on the side of advancement and improvement and his many substantial traits of character have won for him the esteem and goodwill of a large circle of friends.
