OH; to my son Adolphus during life land conveyed to me by Samuel McClimans and wife, and land conveyed to me by William Jackson and wife, in Deer Creek Twp, and 100 acres off the south side of the lands conveyed to me by Edward McCormack as sheriff in Union Twp; after his death the lands to the heirs of my said son. To my dau. Mary during life the lands conveyed to me by George Davidson and wife in Union Twp, and 25 acres conveyed to me by Job K. Jones and wife in Union Twp, and 88 acres off south end of lands conveyed to me by Lewellyn W. Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Lewis, a farmer, and grandson of Philip Lewis, one of the early settlers of the county. ... subsequently became a student in the London High School. During the late civil war he enlisted in the 95th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 14th, 1862, and was an Orderly Sergeant, and afterwards Sergeant-Major of the regiment. ... honorably mustered out in August, 1865. In the autumn of the same year he was elected Sheriff of Madison county, and re-elected in October, 1867, serving four years in that office. During this time he was also Deputy United States Marshal, for Madison county ... He commenced the study of law and was admitted to the bar, May 12th, 1872. He opened an office in London, and practises his profession in Madison and adjoining counties. He was elected in April, 1875, the City Solicitor of London for a term of two years. ... He was married, October 14th, 1875, to Nannie, daughter of A. Dunkin, of London, and granddaughter of Simon Kent, of Madison county, Ohio.

London, was born in Deer Creek Twp, Nov. 18, 1828; son of Samuel and Susannah (Moore) Duncan, natives of Vermont (sic), of Irish Descent; Nathan a lifelong farmer; when 16 years of age, he worked by the month and day. Three years later he began renting and finally he bought 45 acres where he now lives. He was married in 1859 to Caroline Loofbourrow, dau. of Thomas and Sarah (Glaize) Loofbourrow, natives of this county, of German descent. Mrs. Duncan member of Presbyterian Church; he a Democrat, and has been a School-Director in this twp. 14 years.

OH ca 1820, located in London, in dry goods business. Whig, later Republican, for many years was Coroner of county. David Dunkin married Nancy Turner, native of London and dau. of William Turner; they were parents of 3 children, our subject the only survivor. Mrs. Dunkin died 1835, Mr. Dunkin then married Jeanette E. Chenoweth, native of Bourbon Co. KY. Three children born, only one living, Mrs. R.B. Cowling. Mr. Dunkin died in July, 1862. Subject reared in London, resided there during life; farming and stock-raising; owns farm 1,500 acres this twp and 237 acres in Deer Creek Twp; 8 or 9 years the proprietor of the Madison House, London. Republican; once served as member of Village Council. Married July 11, 1848, to Sarah, dau. of Simon Kenton, who was a nephew of old Simon Kenton, the KY pioneer hunter & trapper. 13 children, 9 living: S. Kenton; Nannie wife of B.H. Lewis an attorney of London; William B., proprietor of Madison House, London; Fannie, wife of S.D. Kumler of London; McCloud, David Tod (sic), Clara May, Nellie and Sarah. Mrs. Dunkin's father, Simon Kenton, was one of largest stock-dealers in Madison Co., from 1834 to 1844, he a native of KY. Mrs. Dunkin was born in 1832.

Pg.421: B.H. LEWIS, a well-known attorney at law of London, was born in Jefferson, this county, August 1, 1839. He is a son of George W. Lewis, a farmer, and grandson of Philip Lewis, one of the early settlers of the county, who assisted in laying out London and who represented this district in both Houses of the General Assembly of the State. ... During the late civil war, he enlisted in the Ninety-fifth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, August 14, 1862, ... mustered out in August 1865. In the autumn of the same year, he was elected Sheriff of Madison County, and re-elected October, 1867 ... He was united in marriage, October 14, 1875, to Nannie, daughter of A. Big Plain, was born on the Lower Glade, Madison County, Ohio, June 17, 1853, and is a son of Albert and Frances Downing, he a native of Franklin Co. OH and she of London, this county. (more on Downing family) ... Mr. Downing has been twice married, first to Frances Dunkin, a daughter of David Dunkin. She died during his residence at London. By her he had two children -- David D. and Timothy Lawson - the latter deceased. His second wife was Ann E. Philips, daughter of Milford Phillips, of London.

E-10/12: 24 Jan. 1826, that Elijah May of the State of VA, Howell Lewis Langham Duncan also of the State of VA are the legal heirs and representatives of Robert G. Duncan deceased, are equally interested in three several tracts or surveys of land, towit, survey number of entry 1174 in Clinton Co., survey number of entry 803 in Fayette Co., survey number of entry 1244 in Madison Co., all in VA Military District between the Little Miami and Scioto Rivers and State of OH, which have been resurveyed and divided into lots agreeably to the following plan or plats of such survey respectively towit (diagram of three square parcels of land, each divided into 3 x 3 square lots of 117-1/2 acres to 132 acres each). The parties desire a partition of the lands should be made and said Elijah May's share set off to him in severalty. NOW in consideration of Lot No.9 containing 117-1/2 acres and all the residue of a lot number 2 part of which has been sold to (blank) Haines, being 70-1/2 acres of land as laid down on the plat of survey number of entry 1174, also lots numbered 4, 5, & 6 containing 116 acres each and lot number 8 containing 137 acres as laid down on the plat of survey number of entry 802, also lots numbered 2 & 8 containing 127 acres and lot number 9 containing 132 acres as laid down ... entry 1244, are conveyed to the said Elijah May by deed bearing even date herewith by John Duncan, Attorney in fact for Howell Lewis Langham Duncan, and as one of the heirs and legal representatives of Robert G. Duncan deceased and Levi Cole as one of the heirs of said Robert G. E-13/14: 28 Jan. 1826, Howell Lewis Langham Duncan of State of VA of one equal part and John Duncan, Levi Cole and wife, Sampson Cole, Enoch Hoff and Nancy Hoff his wife, and Valentine Duncan the legal heirs and reps. of Robert G. Duncan decd, of other part, are interested in certain lots or parcels of land within the bounds of the original surveys numbered 1174 in Clinton Co., 802 in Fayette Co., and 1244 in Madison Co., which have been resurveyed and divided into lots agreeably to a plot of each survey described in a deed made by the above parties to Elijah May of VA and deed of like nature from said May to the parties herein, dated 24th instant, reference to the deeds, after deducting the quantity conveyed to said Elijah May who was entitled to one third part of the surveys, and also deducting the quantity of land heretofore sold out of each survey the the said Howell Lewis Langham Duncan and Robert G. Duncan, and numbered No.1 of 121-1/4 acres, no.3 of 122-3/4 acres, no.8 of 124-1/2 acres in entry 1174; and No.1 of 116 acres, No.7 of 123 acres and No.9 of 105 acres in entry 802; No.1 of 127 acres, no.3 of 133-1/3 acres, No.4 of 127 acres, No.5 of 127 acres and No.6 of 132-1/2 acres in entry 1244. NOW, in order that the lots can be partitioned, the said John Duncan for himself and as agent and attorney in fact for said Howell Lewis Langham Duncan, in consideration of Lots 3 and 8 in Entry 1178, Lots 1 & 4 in entry 1244 and Lot7 in entry 802, this day conveyed to said Howell Lewis Langham Duncan and himself by Levi Cole for himself and as attorney in fact for the residue of the heirs of Robert G. VA appoint our friend Benjamin Hinkson of town of Wilmington, Ohio, our attorney in fact for us to sell any lands in the State of OH within the bounds of survey Number of entry 1174, entry 802, or entry 1244, in the Counties of Clinton, Fayette and Madison, or to rent or lease the same; also to make deeds for any quantity of land heretofore sold out of either of said surveys by Robert G. OH appoint Enoch Hoff of Marietta afsd my attorney to sell the following lands in the Counties of Clinton, Madison and Fayette in Ohio, lots 3 & 8 part of Survey number of Entry 1174 in Clinton Co., Lot 7, part of entry 802 in Fayette Co., and lots 1 & 4 part of entry 1244 in Madison Co., refer to deeds of partition between one Elijah May of VA and said Howell L.L.
