Left to go into railroad business as freight solicitor with Ohio & Mississippi R.R., and when that road was consolidated with Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern R.R., was appointed agent of the consolidation at St.Louis; resigned, 1897, to go into manufacturing business with the Charter Oak Stove & Range Co., in the sales department, and in 1903 was elected vice-president of the company.       Pg.613: JAMES P. DUNCAN, assistant treasurer of Buxton & Skinner Stationery Co. ... born in Sidney, OH, son of John and Margaret (Fulton) Duncan. On paternal side he is of Scotch-Irish descent and his ancestors fought under Bruce. His grandfather, James Duncan, was born in the north of Ireland and on coming to the new world settled in Erie Co. PA at an early day. There he cleared and improved a farm, on which he made his home until called to his final rest at the ripe old age of 91 years. His farm is still owned by his descendants. In his family were several children who scattered over the middle west, one of these being John Duncan, father of our subject, who finally located in the beautiful little town of Sidney, OH. For a time he was engaged in merchandising and was treasurer of his county many years. ... Our subject's maternal grandfather was Benjamin Fulton. Old records concerning the history of the Fulton family in Ireland make mention of the origin of the name. (more on Fulton family) Benjamin Fulton, a son of Abraham Fulton (died 1835 age 85), lived for some time in OH near Canal Fulton and afterward removed to Shelby Co., settling near Sidney. It was in 1838 that he took up his abode there, living on one farm until his death, which occurred in 1843. He had 8 children ... (5th) Margaret became the wife of John Duncan and the mother of our subject. James P. Duncan spent his early boyhood to the age of 16 in his native town ... (was deputy county treasurer in Sidney, OH) In 1879 he came to St. Louis ... In 1881 he was married to Miss Candace E. Cole, of Vermont, the dau. of A.B. and Miriam (Hitchcock) Cole, ... Four children, Robert C., a graduate of WA Univ.; James H., a senior in university; Andrew C. in senior year of Manual Training School; and Miriam M., attending public schools.

      Vol.1, Pg.617: "Duncan's Island" -- Early in the present century a low sand-bank extended from the foot of Market Street to the south-western extremity of the village of St. Louis. A slight elevation at the lower end of this bank, which was covered with bushes, insulated by the action of the river, developed in time into a well-defined island, which, up to about the year 1830, kept increasing by accretions. Robert Duncan, or, as he was called, "Old Bob" Duncan, built a cabin on the island to insure a pre-emption claim, and this gave to it the name "Duncan's Island." David Adams, a renowned hunter, mentioned by Captain Bonneville in the journal of his adventures and explorations in the Rocky Mountains, lived on the island at a later date, and died there not many years since. The portion of the island not washed away has been absorbed in the mainland on the Illinois side.

      Pg.611-613: DUNCAN RUSSEL, ex-judge of Cass County, is of sturdy Scotch lineage ... He was born in Scotland in 1847. His parents, William and Margaret (Duncan) Russel, were born in Scotland. William Russel was born in 1820. He emigrated from Scotland to America in 1852 and located in St.Louis, Missouri. He remained in St.Louis for a few years and then went to Virginia, soon returning to St.Louis. William Russel was a skilled iron manufacturer and he operated a rolling mill and a furnace in Virginia. In 1866 he came from Virginia to Cass County and located temporarily near Drexel. In 1868 he purchased the farm in Grand River township, which became the home place and which has never since been allowed to pass out of the ownership of some member of the family. William Russel lived but three short years to enjoy his estate. He died in 1871, and is buried in East Cemetery in Harrisonville. Margaret (Duncan) Russel was born in 1821. She survived her husband forty-one years, her death occurring when she was eighty-one years of age, in 1912. William and Margaret (Duncan) Russel were the parents of six children, who were, namely: Mrs. Margaret Brown, deceased; Duncan, subject of this review; Mrs. Ellen Wilson, Kansas City, Missouri; Sarah, Harrisonville, Missouri; D.B., Harrisonville, Missouri; and J.D., Harrisonville, Missouri. ...       Pg.2334: William A. Duncan, lawyer, lives 3 miles north of Raleigh, near Memphis [Shelby Co.], TN. Born St. Louis MO 26 March 1856, son of Frank and Annie (Crowley) Duncan. Frank was b. Louisville [Jefferson Co.], KY, the son of Col. Henry Duncan who was in the Steamboat business on the Ohio and MS Rivers and had a large livery business in Louisville. Col. Henry Duncan was officer in the Confederate Service. His brother Garnett was a lawyer at Louisville. Garnett's son, Blanton, was also a lawyer. Frank Duncan to St. Louis when a young boy, in 1864 came to Memphis. Catholic.

Judge Hughes was first married in November, 1856, to Miss Susan Doxey, a daughter of John and Rebecca Doxey, of Missouri. To that union were born three children ... The wife and mother died in June, 1871. November 22, 1877, our subject was married at the residence of Mrs. William Short, at Louisville [Jefferson Co.], Kentucky, by Rev. M. Conn, of the Presbyterian Church, to Miss Jennie Lowrie Duncan, a daughter of David and Henrietta (Spence) Duncan, natives of Illinois. The mother was the youngest daughter of Dr. Andrew Spence, of Philadelphia. (gives children of Andrew Spence) Mrs. Duncan's parents died at an early age ... After returning to Philadelphia, she met and married David Duncan, a son of Gardner Duncan, a native of Glasgow, Scotland. Mr. Gardner Duncan had the following children: James, David, John, Lowrie; Mrs. Jane Rickards, Mrs. Marion Stevens, Grace and Mrs. Cecilian B. Francis. Mr. Francis was United States Consul to Victoria, under Lincoln, of whom he was a great friend. Mr. David Duncan was drowned while crossing the Sangamon river, in Illinois, in an early day. His wife died of cholera in Louisville, KY. Their daughter, Henrietta Spence, resides with her sister, Mrs. Hughes, in Georgetown. ...

      Pg.1675: LEWIS J. DUNCAN, mayor of Butte [Silver Bow Co.], was born in the city of St.Louis, Missouri, on the 4th of May, 1857, and is the son of Edwin and Emma S. (Francis) Duncan, the former of whom was born in the state of New York, of staunch Scotch lineage, and the latter of whom was born in England, whence she came with her parents to America when she was ten years of age, the family home being established at Quincy, Illinois in which state she was reared to maturity. Edwin Duncan removed to Missouri when a young man and there held various positions of trust. His marriage was solemnized in St.Louis, that state, where he continued to maintain his home until his death, in 1860, at the age of thirty-two years. Of this union were born two children, of whom both are now living. Mrs. Emma S. (Francis) Duncan was born in 1832 and lived to a venerable age. She passed the closing years of her life in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she died in August, 1909. In 1867 she contracted a second marriage, becoming the wife of Samuel Wood, and of this union two children were born.
            The early educational discipline of Lewis J. Duncan was received in the public schools of Quincy [Adams Co.], Illinois, to which place his widowed mother returned after the untimely death of the husband and father. At the age of seventeen years, Mr. Duncan entered Hanover College, a Presbyterian institution at Hanover, Indiana, where he was a student in the year 1874-1875. He then returned to Quincy, Illinois, where he took up the study of law. He was admitted to the bar in 1878, at the age of 21 years, and for the ensuing two years he continued in the practice of his profession at Quincy. ... Accepted a position in the employ of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company in the freight department at East St.Louis, Illinois, for some time. Returning later to Quincy ... for seven years. ... qualified himself for the Unitarian ministry. On the 1st of March, 1899, Mr. Duncan accepted the pastorate of the Unitarian church at Sheffield, Illinois, ....
            In 1902 Mr. Duncan was called to Montana to take charge of the organization of the Unitarian church in the city of Butte, ... pastor of this church until March 1, 1910, ... withdrew. Socialist party in Montana, Masonic fraternity, ...
            At Quincy, Illinois, on the 26th of October, 1882, was solemnized the marriage of Mayor Duncan to Miss Kate Keath, daughter of Uriah H. Keath, who has long been one of the representative members of the bar of that city, where he still maintains his home, his wife, whose maiden name was Carrie Turner, having been summoned to eternal rest in 1889. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan became the parents of two children, Edith, who was born at Quincy, Illinois, in 1886, died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1904; Edwin, who was born at Sheffield, Illinois, in 1890, is now one of the electricians for the Great Falls power station, at Butte, Montana.
