MAD: According to "Ancestors of our Children; Wells Laflin Field III & Tabitha Field Ballard; Part III, Duncan-McKee & Allied Family Ancestors" by Wells Laflin Field Jr. & Edith Duncan Field, 1978 (Los Angeles Public Library book 929.2 F45-3), in 1700 there was a William Duncan and his brother Thomas who were located on a 100 acre plantation in Somerset Co. MD called "First Contentment"; he sold some land to a Davis during that year. MAD: There is a reference in "Land Records of Worcester Co. MD 1666-1810" by Ruth T. Dryden to Thomas Duncan, "Contentment" patented 1686, sold 1695 to Robert Simpson who willed to Samuel Davis.

This Indenture made the eighteenth day of June in the Seventh year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King and Queen to Defend by the first hand in the year of our Lord God one thousand six hundred ninety and five. Between Edward Williams of the County Suffux in the province of Pensilvania of the one part and Thomas Duncan of Somerset County and Province of Maryland on the other part. Witness that who the right Honorable Lord and Propriatory of the Province of Maryland and also Lord Baron of Baltimore by his patens and deed of Grant under the good Seal used in the Province for granting of land thus bearing the City of St. Mary's of the first day of September one thousand six hundred eighty seven for the consideration therein mentioned granted unto Edward Williams aforsaid of that Tract of Parcel of land called Betties Rest .... Galen Duncan's comments: Land from Edward Williams called Betties Rest, from John Brown and wife Elizabeth called Carpenter's enjoyment, and Land patented by Thomas Duncan called Contentment. Contentment was a Land Patent recorded 3 May 1686 and wasn't listed in Somerset County Deeds 1665-1800. The patent and later transfers were listed in the Ruth T. Dryden's book "Land Records of Worcester County, 1666-1810." Worcester County was formed in 1742 from Somerset County.

This Indenture made this eighteen day of June in the seventh year of our Soverign Lord and Lady William and Mary by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland King and Queen defenders of the faith and in the year of our Lord God one thousand Six hundred Ninety five. Between Thomas Duncan of Somerset County and Province of Maryland of the one part and Robert Simpson of the aforesaid County and Province of the other part.

Now this Indenture further Witness that the said Thomas Duncan for Diverse Causes and Valuable Considerations him there unto moving but more especially of and in Consideration of eight thousand pounds of tobacco in hand paid into the Tho Duncan by Robert Simpson the Reciept whereof and of every part and parcel the aforesaid Tho Duncan doth hereby acknowledge and doth Clearly and absolutely aquit exonerate and discharge the said Robert Simpson his heirs Executors and Administrators by virtue of this present Indenture have given granted bargained and sold and by these presents do give grant bargain sell enforce and Confirm unto him the said Robert Simpson his heirs and assigns forever all these tracts of Land before mentioned To Wit Betties Rest Situate lying being and bound aforesaid and also the other Tract of Land called Carpenter's enjoyment Situate lying being and bounded aforesaid and also that other Tract of Land called Contentment being bounded as aforesaid together with all the Rights proffits priveledges and all and every the appurtances unto them belonging.
To Have and to Hold these same and every part and parcell of these before mentioned three Tracts of Land to him the said Robert Simpson and to the only proper use of him the said Robert Simpson his heirs Assigns forever without any Mortgage Conditions use of limitations to recall alter charge defend Determine or make worse the same the Rent and Services and to the Lord or Lords of the fee excepted and foreprized and the said Thomas Duncan doth for himself his heirs Executors and Administrators Covenent promise and grant to and with Robert Simpson his heirs Executors Administrators and Assign to and with every of them by these presents that the said Tho Duncan now is and stands lawfully possessed and invested of and in the said Tracts of Land called Betties Rest Carpenter's enjoyment and Contentment together with all and every the premises and appurtenances of them and that he hath good Rightfull power and lawfull authority in himself to give grant bargain sell convey assign enforce and Confirm the said Tract of Land and promise unto him the said Robert Simpson his heirs and assigns in manor and form as aforesaid and that he the said Robert Simpson shall and lawfully may from time to time and at all times forever hereafter stand firmly amply lawfully and officially siezed and possessed of and in the premises all the appurtenances and shall and may peacefully and quietly have hold occupy possess and enjoy the Tracts of Land aforesaid called Betties Rest, Carpenter's enjoyment, Contentment with all and wholly the Commodities here defined and appurtenances unto them belonging or any wise appurtaning without the least suit trouble interruption or disturbance of any person or persons whosoever and also free and Clear freely and Clearly aquitted exeronerated and discharged or otherwise well and sufficiently saved and kept harmless of and from all and all manor of other or former gifts, grants, bargains, sales, leases wills ventures Dowers Wills, Mortgages, Rents Charges or the incumberances whatsoever had done or supposed by the law Tho Duncan or by any other person or persons whatsoever and also that the said Thomas Duncan or his heirs executors or Administrators Shall and will from time to time and at all times hereafter upon the Reasonable request and Costs and Charges in the law aforesaid Robert Simpson and his heirs or Assigns make do acknowledge execute and support the cause to be made done acknowledged executed and supported all and every such further Act or Acts thing or things device or devices assurance or assurances in the law whatsoever for the further and more fully absolute and perfect selling assuring and Conveying of the said Tract of Land called Betties Rest Carpenter's enjoyment and Contentment with all and every their appurtenances who the aforesaid Robert Simpson his heirs or assigns or to him or their Council learned in law shall be reasonably devise advised or required in confirmation and full assurance of the above written.
The said Tho Duncan hath to these presents set to and affixed his hand and Seal giving Deed and State with full and peaceful possession by liberty of and in the above mentioned three Tracts of Land and premisses with their appurtenances who then belong to the said Thomas subscription and fixing his Seal and the witness as subscriptions as ... manifest the day and year first above written. /s/ Thomas Duncan. James Duncan, lived on seaboard side, had land called 'Adventure and Expectation.' The latter surveyed April 29, 1695, later became the property of Capt. Edward Hammond. (pg.46)
Jan. 21, 1733, Samuel Davis of Accomack Co. VA sold to John Donelson of Somerset Co. MD, 220 acres called 'Beyond Expectation.' Elizabeth Duncan originally owned, and left no heirs. (MAD: note by Dorothy Smith 1983, that Samuel Davis had patent to 500 acres called "Beyond Expectation" originally belonging to Elizabeth Duncan, who died without heirs, so that the land escheated, and a resurveying showing the tract to contain 220 acres only, chiefly marsh, the said land lying in a Neck called Newport, on the N.W. side of Assateague River, near Benj. Burton's plantation. No source given.)
