Pension Index Card File, alphabetical; of the Veterans Administrative Contact and Administration Services, Admin. Operations Services, 1861-1934; Duff to A-J Duncan (negative FHL film 540,888, some cards very faint); Joseph Duncan to Dunn (positive FHL film 540,889, some cards very dark)
Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

HISTORIES before 1923

1885-1888 "KY, a History of the State" 2nd or 3rd Edition (Volume), by Perrin, Battle & Kniffin (FHL book 976.9 D3wt)
Pg.151, Lyon Co. JAMES N. HOLLOWAY was born Sept. 26, 1819, in Warren Co. KY, son of Thomas and Jane (Cowles) Holloway, both from VA; James N. is oldest of six children and now the only survivor; he was reared on a farm near Eddyville until 28 years old. His father died when he 17, two years after the death of his mother in 1848, he came to Eddyville and conducted a hotel until 1855; spent three years in liquor business on the river and at Paducah and settled permanently in his present grocery and liquor business in 1858. ... He married March 31, 1858, to Ellen Dix, of Eddyville. They have one child, Cora, the wife of Dr. Euclid M. Duncan, one of Eddyville's best physicians..

1874 "History of Kentucky" by Lewis Collins, Vol.II (Decatur Co. Public Library, Decaturville, TN, from Don Richardson 3/2000)
Pg.492, Lyon Co.: Col. Chittenden Lyon, after whom Lyon Co. was named, was the oldest son of Col. Matthew Lyon; represented Caldwell Co. in the KY legislature in 1822, '23, and '24, and the district in congress for eight years, 1827-35. He was a man of prodigious physical proportions, being 6-1/2 feet high in his stockings, and weighing 350 pounds. He was the champion fighter of that whole region, in his day. In 1825, Col. Lyon was engaged in a very exciting contest for a seat in the state senate, in which he was defeated by Dickson Given; and some years later, in a no less exciting race for congress, in which Linn Boyd was his unsuccessful competitor. During one of these contests, Andrew (or Andy) Duncan - a man of like powerful frame and strength, and nearly as large, and his equal in personal prowess, for both were as game as Old Hickory himself - proposed to Col. Lyon, to whom he was bitterly opposed, that he would vote for him at the election, if he (Lyon) "would go out on fair ground, and fight him in a fair old-fashioned Kentucky fist fight." Col. Lyon had braved too many storms, and steered too many flat and keel-boats over dangerous shoals, to be backed down by so fair a proposition! So, at it they went - Duncan quite confident that he could give the colonel a good trouncing. No easy task, it proved. The fight was long and bloody, and neither showed signs of relinquishing the field or even whispering "hold, enough." At last, friends parted them, and called it a drawn battle. The contestants washed, took a drink together of old Robertson whisky (of which they were both fond), shook hands, and made friends for the occasion, as they were personally. Duncan kept his part of the contract, and gave a hearty vote for his jolly competitor in the square stand-up fight.

Pg.734: DUNCAN, Euclid M., M.D. Since his arrival in Marshall, Oct. 10, 1890, Dr. Euclid M. Duncan has built up a reputation for professional courtesy, ... represents a substantial family of Warren Co. KY, where he was born Feb. 4, 1850. In his youth, Dr. Duncan ... farming, but prepared himself ... at Warren College, Bowling Green, KY, soon after taking up the study of medicine with Dr. A.C. Wright of Bowling Green. In 1870 he entered Jefferson Medical College, in Philadelphia, and after his graduation, March 6, 1872, became an assistant in the PA Hospital for the Insane for a year. For the following year he practiced medicine in Bowling Green, and in 1875 moved to Kutuwa, Lyon Co. KY, which remained his home 15 years. In the meantime, May 25, 1876, he was united in marriage to Cora Holloway, a native of Eddyville, KY, and a dau. of J.N. Holloway, a merchant of Eddyville. In 1887 Dr. Duncan became house physician at the Eddyville Prison, the finest penal institution in the South, resigning from the same Oct. 1, 1890, the month of his arrival in Marshall. At the present time he is Pension Examiner at Marshall, and local surgeon for the Vandalla Railroad. He is engaged in a general medical and surgical practice, ... member of the Episcopal Church, fraternally connected with the Red Men ...
