Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Darius Duncan, known everywhere familiarly as "Ri," died at his home in Danville at 8:30 on Wednesday evening of this week, after an illness of four years. He was nearly eighty years of age. He leaves a wife and one son. He used to be a regular attendant at the Hoopeston fair.

Danville News: "Yesterday at 1:30 p.m. Ex-Policeman Tom Dunkin plunged a knife into Wilse Lafferty of Kelleyvile, killing him almost instantly. They had been drinking beer and Lafferty was drunk. Lafferty accused Dunkin of hitting his father on the head when he was on the police force, that he also struck his brother-in-law, Wilber Riley, with a spitto(missing edge) at another time. The two men quarreled and Lafferty threatened to (missing edge) Dunkin and struck him with his (missing) and tried to get a weapon from his pocket. Dunkin took out his knife, opened it and drove the blade deep into Lafferty's chest. Lafferty, without a word, started home and succeeded climbing a fence but could go no further and died in a few minutes. Core(missing) Taylor held an inquest, the result of the inquiry being a verdict of justifiable homicide. Lafferty was 40 years of age and bore a bad reputation (missing) was dangerous when drinking."

Suicide at Potomac. Samuel Duncan, a Farmer at Potomac, Commits Suicide by Hanging.
Yesterday forenoon, when Mack Duncan came in from the oats field at his home in the suburbs of Potomac to get some repairs for his harvester, he was horrified to find the dead body of his father hanging from the limb of a cottonwood tree near the barn. Assistance was hurredly summoned and the body was taken down. Life was entirely extinct and the coroner was summoned to hold an inquest.
Samuel Duncan was a man about fifty years of age. He was a son of Darius Duncan, who died in Danville, last winter, a brother of John Duncan, and a half-brother of Irv and Charley Duncan. He was born and raised near State Line, and was well known by all the old settlers in the county. He was married about twenty-five years ago, and his wife is a most estimable woman. They started out in life under very favorable circumstances, but ill luck seemed to follow them, and they were never able to accumulate much of this world's goods. For the last few years they have been living on the old Young farm, in the suburbs of Potomac. A crop failure or two set them back considerably and they have been working under adverse circumstances lately. In addition to their straitened circumstances Mrs. Duncan's eyesight has been failing rapidly of late and she has become almost blind. Misfortune seemed to weigh heavily on Mr. Duncan's mind within the last few months, and he became so despondent that for a few days he has seemed to be deranged and was under treatment from a local physician. The morning of this death he seemed more cheerful, but when left to himself he tied together some ropes that had been used around some bundles of binding twine, climbed up into a cottonwood tree, adjusted the rope around his neck and around a limb about thirty feet from the ground and threw himself off. When found by his son his body was cold in death.
Mr. Duncan had no bad habits, but never could make money. For many years, however, this did not worry him much, and he was always cheerful and happy. He leaves a wife and only one child, Mack, who has reached man's estate. The body will be buried at the old Newell graveyard, east of West Newell, where the other members of the family who have gone before are laid to rest.

The Preface contains a note that the biographies and family histories printed in this book were taken from the Danville Evening Commercial of 1892 and 1893. Pg.14 contains an article dated April 30, 1892, about Darius Duncan, born Bourbon Co. KY on Dec. 1, 1813, who came to IL with his parents James and Nancy Duncan.
