G-266: July 28, 1853, Special term of Probate Court, Pope Co. IL, Friday 28 July 1853, came Sarah Duncan, widow of Joseph Duncan decd, made application for letters of administration on estate of her said husband decd, she having entered bond with security and taken the oath, letters were accordingly issued. (image 146)
G-271: Sept. 19, 1853, Probate Court, Ordered that the widow of Joseph Duncan decd. and her three children are hereby allowed and to be retained out of the estate of her said deceased husband as her separate property the sum of $200. (image 148)
G-289: December 19, 1853, came Elizabeth Duncan administratrix of Joseph Duncan decd. for the purpose of adjusting and settling accts. (image 157; name was written as "Elizabeth Duncan" but item directly above was for an Elizabeth Van Duser)
G-306: Thursday 9 March 1854. On application of John P. Johnson ordered that letters of administration issue to him as admr. of the estate of James H. Duncan decd. having filed bond. (image 166)
G-327/329: May 2, 1854, John P. Johnson, admin. of James H. Duncan, by his attorney Thomas H. Smith and filed and submitted the following petition: May term 1854, John P. Johnson your petitioner represents that he has been appointed administrator of the estate of James H. Duncan decd and has given bond and has made a certificate setting forth that the decd. was possessed of no personal estate at the time of his decease, petitioner states there is debts remaining due and unpaid against said estate and no personal property to pay the same, that James H. Duncan died seized of real estate in Pope Co., the W 1/2 of SW qr of Sec.19 in T14S of Range 6 East containing 80 acres more or less, advertised for four weeks in the Southern Illinoisian a weekly newspaper published at Shawneetown IL, petitioner prays the above land be sold to pay the debts remaining due against the estate. /s/ John P. Johnson, adm. of J.H. Duncan decd.
Court being satisfied, they ordered the administrator proceed to sell the land or so much as will be sufficient to pay the debts. (images 176 and 177)
G-344/346: Sept. 19, 1854. John P. Johnson, Adm. of James H. Duncan decd by his attorney Thos. H. Smith Esqr, reported the sale of the real estate belonging to said estate. John P. Johnson, Admr. of James H. Duncan decd, vs. all concerned. The undersigned administrator of James H. Duncan reports ... per order of the County Court at May term on 2 May 1854 ordering sale of the real estate, did on 24 June 1854 per public notice, offered for sale the W 1/2 SW qr Sec.19 T14 S R 6 E containing 80 acres, and (blank) Hall having bid $80 for said land, the land was struck off to him his being the highest and best bid, and the said Hall having paid the cash down, the undersigned as admin. have executed a deed. /s/ John P. Johnson, adm. of J.H. Duncan decd. Report approved and entered as a matter of record, Sept. 19, 1854. (images 185 and 186)
G-425/427: 18 Dec. 1855, came Sarah Duncan, administratrix of Joseph Duncan decd, by her brother John Sutherland, and rendered to the court an acct. of her administration of said estate: Sarah Duncan, administratrix of Joseph Duncan decd, in acct. with said estate, 1855 Dec. 17, to amt. of sale bill, $148.97, to property taken by the widow at the appraisement bill, $163.81, Dr. $312.78. Cr: by Amt. allowed to widow $200, 6 per cent on amt of estate after deducting her widow's allowance, $6.76, receipts from others, paid clerk's fees $6.40, total $348.16, $312.78, $35.38. Balance of accounts ... $127.85. Account examined and approved and entered in the record. (images 226 and 227)

"MEXICAN WAR PENSIONS. ACT OF JANUARY 29, 1887. DECLARATION OF WIDOW FOR PENSION. State of Illinois, County of Pope} SS: On this 26th day of March, A.D. 1887, personally before me, clerk of County Court, the same being a court of record in the State of Illinois, a resident of Golconda Precinct in the county of Pope, in the State of Illinois who being by me first duly sworn according to law, deposes and says: I am the widow of Stephen Duncan, who served under the name of Stephen Duncan as a Private in the company commanded by Captain Michael Lawler, in the 3rd regiment of Illinois Infty, commanded by Col. Foreman in the war with Mexico; That my said husband enlisted at Shawneetown on or about the 1st day of June, A.D. 1846, for the term of one year; That I was married under my name of Polly Yewel to my said husband, by Reuben Land on or about the 15th day of Dec., A.D. 1857 at Independence Precinct, in the State of Illinois, and lived with my said husband from the date of my said marriage until the day of his death, to wit: the day he left my bed and board on 12 day of March, A.D. 1865, when my said husband absented himself and has never been or contributed to my support in the State of Illinois, and that I have not since remarried; That there was never any legal impediment to said marriage. No. 1. That my said husband, being duly enlisted as aforesaid, actually served sixty days with the Army of the United States in Mexico, in the war with that Nation, which service was as follows: In camp at Tampico Mex Lieut. Procter of Equality Ills. remembers of his having served in said "Co." at Ciro Gorda & Camorga and was discharged at New Orleans on the 21st day of May, A.D. 1847. No. 2. That my said husband was actually engaged in a battle in said war, to wit: in the battle of Ciro Gorda Mex, at Ciro Gorda highs, on the 18th day of April A.D. 1846, and was honorably discharged at New Orleans on the 21st day of May, A.D. 1847. No. 3. [left blank] No. 4. That I am 65 years of age, and that I was born on or about the 17th day of Nov., A.D. 1821, at Grand Pier, Pope Co., in the State of Ills. No. 5. That I am disabled by reason of Disease of Lungs general disability and emaciation was not incurred while I was in any manner voluntarily engaged in, or aiding or abetting, the late rebellion against the authority of the United States. And above 62 years old. No. 6. That I claim pension by reason of the fact that I am dependent in whole support upon these, not legally bound for my support, and that such dependence as alleged consists in this, to wit: house bed board and med. Attendance when sick. That I am not heretofore made application for pension or bounty-land. That in support and proof of my right to pension, I tender herewith, under the regulations prescribed by the Secretary of the Interior, the following evidence: My husband received a land warrant and made application for disability pension in 1850, so he said, which he fails to prosecute - and the affidavits of Lieut. S. Procter, Equality, Col. James S. Readen, Cairo, Coleman Duncan & Valentine Duncan, Golconda and records at Harrisburg, Ill. That since the death of my said husband I have resided at the following places, to wit: at Golconda, Ills. That I am not laboring under any political disabilities imposed by the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Polly her X mark Duncan. WITNESSES: Robert Duncan, Thomas J. Trovillion, STATE OF Illinois, COUNTY OF Pope} SS: Before me Pevin V. Trovillion, a clerk of a court of record, on this 26th day of March, A.D. 1887, personally appeared Polly Duncan known to me as the person described in, and who executed and signed the foregoing declaration for pension as widow of good report for truth and veracity in the community in which she lives, who being by me first duly sworn, deposes and says that she has read (if claimant cannot read, read to her and so state in acknowledgement) the foregoing declaration and knows the contents thereof; and that all of the facts therein stated are true. "DEPOSITION B, Case of Polly Duncan deceased, No. 577 O.W. On this 21st day of April, 1891, at near Mitchellsville, County of Saline, State of Illinois, before me, Edward P. Elliott, a Special Examiner of the Pension Office, personally appeared Mrs. Delila Duncan, who, being by me first duly sworn to answer truly all interrogatories propounded to her during this Special Examination of aforesaid pension claim, deposes and says: My age is 74 years I am the widow of Thomas Duncan deceased and sister of Polly Duncan deceased the claimant. Residence near and post office address Mitchellsville Saline Co., Ills. I am four years older than my sister Polly Duncan who died about the 21st day of January 1889 at her son in laws Robert Bolden who lives about one mile and a half from Harrisburgh (sic) Saline Co. Ills. We were only sisters and daughters of Simon and Elizabeth Wamble and I married Thomas Duncan and Polly married his brother Stephen Duncan. I do not know the month but she was married to Stephen Duncan in this county, but it was in the year 1857. At this time I was living in Alexander County, Illinois. Stephen was in the Mexican War and was in the war about a year this was during his first wife's life time. His first wife was Maria Hill who was raised in the county and died some eight years before he was married to my sister Polly. My sister Polly had been married to a man named Alfred Ewall (sic) who died about the year 1848. She had seven children by Ewall (sic) but one whom is now living Julia Ann Bolden the wife of Robert Bolden. After my sister married Steven Duncan by whom she had one child named Delila who was married to this same Bob Bolden who afterward married Julia his daughter by her first husband. After their marriage they moved to Pulaski County near Allen Ills. then moved to this county and afterwards moved to Pope County Illinois near Golconda and there he deserted her as well as I remember about the year 1865. He was a man that was always fussing with his family and they did not get along pleasantly so he left her and went to work for a man named William Wilson who lived near Golconda Ills. He lived at Wilsons about one year then went off down the Ohio river in a Skiff taking his bedding and a sett (sic) of carpenter tools along with him and shortly after he left a big storm came up and it is supposed that he was drowned for he never had been heard of afterward. He had promised to write to Mr. Wilson but he never heard from him. He never applied for a divorce. Neither was she ever served with any papers claiming a divorce. She lived near Golconda Ills keeping house and working out up to about six or seven years ago when she moved up into this county living around with her relatives. Her health was bad and she was quite feeble and lived on the Charity of her relatives and friends. She had no money and left no estate whatever. I do not know how long she was sick or what physician attended her during her last illness. And do not know who attended to the payment of her funeral expenses or the expenses of her last illness. Not having seen her daughter or any member of that family since the date of her death and knew the date of her death from a letter written to the family by her daughter. I knew that Polly never remarried after being deserted by Stephen and do not know that she ever had a change to remarry. I knew these facts of his deserting her from what was told me by Polly and other members of the family. I have stated all due facts that I remember of in this matter. I have no procuring interest in the prosecution of this claim for a pension. My answers have been correctly recorded in this deposition. Coleman and Valentine Duncan brothers of Stephen Duncan and Ellen Turner a sister are all the members of the family still living. Coleman and Valentine Duncan live near Golconda Pope Co., Illinois and Ellen Turner lives near Springfield Illinois. William Wilson the man Stephen worked for after leaving Polly is dead. I believe that Coleman and Valentine Duncan were living near Golconda Illinois at the time Stephen deserted Polly in 1865 and will probably remember the facts better than I do. Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

Pg.186-8: MRS. SARA A. (DUNCAN) POOR, widow of Jasper Newton Poor, is a resident of Vienna [Pope Co.], native of Williamson Co., where her parents (unnamed) are still living on the old farm. Her father is one of the substantial farmers of his county, and he has also engaged in business as a general merchant and dealer in tobacco. He and his wife had a family of six children, as follows: Warren Webster, a lawyer at Marion; George Washington, proprietor of a general merchandise store at Lake Creek; James Thomas, who died in infancy; Perrin Wilson, a merchant at Lake Creek; Charles L., at home with his parents; and Sara A. The subject of this biography was very well educated ... united in marriage with Jasper Newton Poor, September 3, 1882; dwelling ... in Vienna; here Mrs. Poor lives with and for her children, Mamie Newton and Grace Duncan [Poor] ..., loss of devoted husband. Jasper N. Poor was a Johnson Co. boy, born Nov. 5, 1855, a son of Sampson D. Poor, pioneer of this county now residing in Metropolis, Massac Co., native of TN, ... married Sarah Jane Mount, ten children (not copied here). Jasper N. Poor was 2nd child; he died 25 Jan. 1890. Pg.479: FRANCIS M. DUNCAN ... Pope Co, who resides in township 11, range 6, and was born in Rhea Co. TN in 1842. His father, Russell Duncan, was born in Washington Co. TN in 1817 and is a son of William Duncan, of the same county. The latter was a farmer, as was also his father, Charles Duncan, of North Carolina, who was also a mechanic. Both Charles Duncan and his son William died in Washington Co. TN at quite an advanced age.
The mother of our subject was Mary T. Rector, of East TN, who after she married Russell Duncan lived in TN until 1870. That year Mr. and Mrs. Duncan removed by team to Jefferson Co. IL, and there the latter died in 1879, aged 56 years, having been the mother of 13 children, 7 sons and six daughters, one of whom died when an infant. Landon R. who was a volunteer in the 2nd TN Infantry of the Federal army, died in KY in the spring of 1862, in his 21st year. Mary Saphrona died in IL at about the age of 28; Sarah M., wife of William Secrest, died in IL; Hiram H. died at his parents' home in 1884; and Ellen E., a single lady, died also at home, in 1892. The names of the living are as follows: Margaret E. in AL; Francis M., the subject of this sketch; Charles Polk, a farmer of Pope Co.; John A., a farmer of Jefferson Co.; William E., also a farmer of Jefferson Co.; Vesta E., wife of Henry Miner, of Jefferson Co.; and Adeline, wife of David Mooney.
Francis M. Duncan, who was the 2nd child and 2nd son, and is the eldest of the family living, was reared to farm life ... enlisted in 20th year in KY in 5th TN Infantry of Union army, served in ranks over 3 years except when sick in hospital for a short time. His brothers Charles Polk and John A. were also volunteers in the Federal army. These men in TN who entered the Union army knew something of what it cost to be loyal to the Old Flag, and they also knew something of the cost of war. At first Mr. Duncan volunteered at home, but the regiment was soon disbanded and each member of it fled for safety. For some time he was secreted in the mountains with his father and brother; but one night went home to sleep in his bed, and was captured by the rebels and held a prisoner, but only for 2 hours, when he made his escape. The next spring he was one of 33 to cross the mountains and volunteer in KY, and came out of the war without being wounded.
In April, 1866, our subject was married to Miss Sarah Jane Robbs, of Pope Co., and a daughter of J.L. Robbs. He and his wife then went to MO for a few months, but later returned to this county, and in 1876 bought 40 acres ... Built part of his present dwelling house in fall of 1892. Mr. and Mrs. Duncan have buried one infant daughter, Mary L., and have 6 children living, viz: Amanda S., wife of Joseph Gossage, a farmer of Pope Co.; Vesta I., wife of William Gossage, and who has 3 children; William A., a young man of 19 at home; Minnie, a young lady of 18; Elmina, a miss of 14; and Thomas L., 12 years old. Mr. Duncan is a Master Mason, a Simon-pure Republican; he and wife members of Social Brethren Church. ...

He enlisted in the Union army during the Civil war, serving 3 years, one month and a half in the 31st Illinois Volunteer Infantry. ... later moved to a farm in Saline Co. IL, ... until 1889, when his demise occurred; he was buried in Walnut Grove cemetery. When a young man, Mr. Duncan was united in marriage to Miss Frances Wilson, a native of KY. Her family moved to IL, locating in Pope county, near Mr. Duncan's home; ... later married in Pope Co. IL. Mrs. Duncan's death took place in Saline Co. IL, and five of her seven children survived her, the remaining two having died in infancy. The names of those who grew to maturity are as follows: Alice, who married Sherman Shufflebarger and lived in Pope county, IL, where her death occurred; Olive E., the wife of William J. Hutchinson, residing at Darrisville, IL; Cordelia, married to H.N. Finney, of Carrier Mills, IL, where Mrs. Finney's demise occurred; J.E., the lawyer who is the subject of this biography; and Violet V., who is married to Lewis Pattinson and resides in IL. ....
The first 17 years of John Edgar Duncan's life were spent on his father's farm, ... When he was seventeen years of age his father died ... admitted to the bar in 1899 ... Mr. Duncan had taken up his residence in Caruthersville in 1898 .... Mr. Duncan has been twice married. He was united to Miss Robbie McGaugh, daughter of William McGaugh, and she died in the month of March, 1905. On the 21st day of June, 1906, Mr. Duncan married Miss Myrtle Crowe, who was born July 17, 1884, a daughter of Dr. B.D. Crowe and Emma (Kirkpatrick) Crowe. By this 2nd marriage Mr. Duncan became the parent of three children, one of whom is dead; the names of the two living are -- Madge Lee, born April 16, 1908, and John Sterling, whose birth occurred June 29, 1910. ....
