A2-205: Will of Joseph Duncan, weak and afflicted in body; my wife and children being provided an ample estate and income by her father and their grandfather the late James R. Smith, I do not desire to do a great deal more for them; to my wife in trust for herself and my children the household and kitchen furniture ... Should my sister Polly Ann Linn be at any time in indigent circumstances, $1000 be invested by executors in land for her sole & separate use & support. Executors pay $10 or $15 to (blank) Arnett. To the heirs of Joseph Cooley then living one greater section of my lands in IL. $100 to erect a new house in which to worship Almighty God in Jacksonville. $2000 to aid in establishment in neighborhood of Jacksonville an institution for relief & education of the blind, and like sum for lunatic asylum. Suit now pending US vs. myself & others as sureties of William Linn, late ?? of public monies at the land office Vandalia IL, to be defended to the last extremity & if my estate is forced to pay the defalcation of Linn as sought to be recovered, I direct my executors to petition congress year after year until the amount so unjustly collected shall be refunded to my estate. I issued some Warsaw stock in the name of James Boormans? to secure him in the payment of a debt from me to him, he having declined to take said stock, ... it constitutes a part of my estate. A2-239: Bond of William Thomas, Dennis Rockwell, James Dunlap, Cornelius F. Cook, Joseph J. Cassell and Bezaliel Gillett, 13 July 1844, for William Thomas, admr. of will of Joseph Duncan; that although the will did not require the executors to give bond, the probate judge did as a result of another condition in the will; James M. Duncan, William Brown and Daniel C. Pierson refused to post bond, letters testamentary were revoked to them 29 Jan. 1844, and William Thomas was appointed administrator.

Cataloged under Civil War, 1861-1865, pensions, indexes; does not say if Confederate or Federal, but probably Federal. Negative film, some cards much too faint or dark to read, some cards blurred or faded, particularly the service unit and the dates of application. Most of the very faint or dark cards were in a slightly different format, with space for years enlisted and discharged which were sometimes filled in. Many of these were for service in later years, although one or two were for service ca 1866.
Name of soldier, alias, name of dependent widow or minor, service (military unit or units), date of filing, class (invalid or widow or minor or other), Application #, Certificate #, state from which filed (sometimes blank), attorney (sometimes blank, MAD: did not usually copy), remarks. Sometimes the "Invalid" or "Widow" class had an "s" added to it before the application #; occasionally the area for the service information included a circled "S". The minor's name was frequently that of the guardian rather than the minor.
The military unit was frequently the Company Letter, the Regiment Number, sometimes US Vet Vol Inf. (US Veteran Volunteer Infantry), L.A. (Light Artillery), H.A. (Heavy Artillery), US C Inf (US Colored? Infantry), Cav. (Cavalry), Mil. Guards, V.R.C. (?Volunteer Reserve Corps?), etc. Sometimes there were several service units given.
Cards appear to be arranged by the last name, first name, middle initial if any, and state (including "US") of service.

DEATH OF GOV. DUNCAN. It is under the keenest emotions of sorrow that we are called upon to record the sudden death of GOV. JOSEPH DUNCAN, of Jacksonville [Morgan Co.], in this State. He departed this life on Monday the 15th inst., at his residence, after a short but severe attack of the winter fever.
Overwhelmed as this writer is with grief at the loss of a warm and devoted personal friend, we feel illy able to speak at this time, of the many virtues that adorned the life of this distinguished statesman, philanthropist, patriot, and christian, in terms, and at the length, that his useful and brilliant public career would justify. This melancholy though pleasant task must be deferred for a season, until the first ebullitions (sp) of sorrow have subsided, and until we have become more reconciled to the irreparable loss that we, in common with the State at large, have sustained.
As a statesman, he was without an equal in Illinois; and to her citizens he has bequeathed a rich legacy, in the various messages and State papers emanating from his honest and incorruptible mind, during the periods in we he discharged, with credit to his country and honor to himself, the various public offices he was from time to time called upon to fill by the people of the State. With an eye single to the good of his country, the honor, welfare and prosperity of the people, he never for a moment, in any and all of his public acts, regarded consequences to himself; but ever was governed by that stern and unbending patriotism, purity of motive, and honesty of heart, that are always the brightest jewels in the diadem of an American patriot and statesman.
As a philanthropist, the cause of benevolence and humanity has lost one of its most devoted friends, --its most liberal benefactors. When was an appeal ever made to the lamented and deplored Duncan, for and by any of the various benevolent or religious institutions of the country; and that appeal not responded to by a generous and --neral contribution? When did the poor, the needy, or the afflicted, ever ask of him in vain? When did a friend, or even a foe, ever seek a favor at his hands, that was not granted if in his power? He was generous, noble, forgiving to a fault; and his whole public and private life is an example worthy of imitation. "We knew him but to love him -- we saw him but to praise."
As a christian, he was exemplary in all the relations of life--adorning the doctrines he professed, and exhibiting in his "daily walk and conversation," a beautiful example of the all-pervading, all-harmonizing, and all-elavating influence of the precepts of Christ, when received into the heart by faith and love, and acknowledged as the controlling motive of human conduct.
To his deeply bereaved family -- that fond and doating (sp) wife, who much needed, in her delicate and precarious state of health, his constant care and watchfulness, and who clung to him with that dependence and tenderness with which the ivy clings to the oak -- that large family of little children, who loved so tenderly the best, the kindest, the most indulgent of fathers -- we tender our most heartfelt sympathies; and, if sympathy could blunt the dart," "That rankles in their wounded hearts," we know their grief would be greatly assuaged, and their sorrow shorn of its keenest pang. The great consolation, however is left them, that they mourn not as those without hope for--
"He has fought the good fight, he has finished the faith; He has burst from the thralldom (?) of sorrow and death; From achness, from weeping, from funeral hours; he has soared to the regions of sunshine and flowers. And his eyes unbeclouded are looking abroad; On the river of life, and the city of God; on scenes which no pencil, or pen can portray; Where the splendors of Heaven unceasingly play."

Obituary
The ways of the Almighty are fast finding out.
Last week we were in mourning because of the death of Gov. Duncan. To-day it is our sad task to announce the death of his eldest brother, Capt. Matthew Duncan, and his wife, Mrs. Susan C. Duncan, who departed this life at their residence at Shelbyville, Ill.- the latter on the 11th inst.- the former on the morning of the 16th.
These brothers, unconscious of the afflictions of each other, were at the same time, struggling in the arms of death: and it is a source of deep gratitude to their surviving friends to know that each were sustained in that dreadful conflict by the arm of Omnipotence.
Gov. Duncan died at 9 o'clock, P.M. of the 15th, and Capt. M. Duncan at 6, A.M., of the 16th- only a few hours difference in the time of their exit; and both died in joyous hopes of a blissful immortality. -- Illinoian, Jan. 20th.

SUDDEN DEATH - Judge Sidney S. Duncan, for many years a citizen of this city and vicinity, died suddenly at the "Dayton House," on Sunday evening, at five minutes before eight o'clock, having been ill but a few hours. During the day he complained of feeling unwell, as he thought, from the excessive heat. He remained in his room during most of the day. At five o'clock, he left the house with a water pitcher, and went to Widmeyer's restaurant, where he obtained some ice; returning to his room, he drank freely of the ice water, and at 6 o'clock he requested the hotel clerk to send for a physician, as he felt quite sick. The clerk went for a physician himself. Upon going to his room soon after, the clerk found it empty and Judge Duncan lying on the floor in a room adjoining, and speechless. Calling help, the clerk succeeded in putting him in his own bed, when Dr. King was hastily called. It was too late, however, Judge Duncan never spoke afterward, and died at five minutes before 8.
The deceased was born in Russell county, Ky., in 1810, and was consequently 62 years of age. He located in this vicinity 45 years ago, and remained here during most of that time. For years he followed merchandising and was a fair and energetic business man. At one time he was judge of the county court of Morgan county.
The funeral occurred yesterday at 5 o'clock p.m. at the Dayton House, Rev. W.F. Short conducting. The burial occurred at the Jacksonville Cemetery.

ILLINOIS STATE NEWS
An incendiary fire at Franklin, in Morgan County, on the night of the 11th, burned two buildings. One, a two-story brick, was occupied by Wright Bros. as a drug and liquor store. The contents and building were totally consumed. Loss, $6,000. The other was occupied by Langley, Poling & Wright. The goods were saved. Loss on building, $3,000. The incendiary, named John C. Duncan, who was subsequently arrested, broke into the ware-room of the drug-store, poured coal oil over the floor, set fire to the oil and rushed from the building, but before he could get out the explosion took place, injuring him badly and setting fire to his clothes, causing his immediate arrest. Duncan had been refused whiskey at this establishment, which is supposed to have caused him to commit the heinous deed.

One son who lived to adulthood was Joseph Duncan, b. 10/19/1835, d. 11/28/1906 Chicago, Cook Co. IL, mar. Harriet Newell C. Stevens.
