Vols. Infty. Is claimant. Personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the County and State above named, Robert Duncan whose age is 44 years and whose Post Office address is Golconda Ills. who being by me duly sworn in relation to said claim makes the following statement as follows to wit. I was well acquainted with said George B. Harner three years prior to enlistment in Pope County, Ills. Knew him as a healthy stout young man free from any disability. He and I enlisted the same day at Golconda, Ills. in Co. F 29th Ills Vols. Infty and served in the same company during the war of 1861 and 1865. I have known him continuously from 1859 until the present date. I knew he was sick and reported to Dr. Charles C. Guard at Cairo, Ills. in the fall of 1861 and was treated by him for measles in camp known as Camp McClern and I further state that I never heard or knew of his being sick before he went in the army. I do know that during the campaign in taking Fort Henry on Tennessee River Feb. 5th 6th 1862 that we were exposed to in elements .[unclear in fold] in creeks waist deep . and that during this same time were marched to the Fort at Donelson and then hurled against the rebel Earth works exposed to rain & snow and freezing weather without shelter tents or fire for three days and nights without rations as an eye witness and of my aching bones and frozen heels testify are certainly cause and circumstances enough to enable me to say that. I believe he contracted said phenmatism from exposure in the amry of the US and while a member of Co. F 29th Ills Vols Infty. I further state he has labored from said disabilities from date of discharge to the present time as I know from seeing him and frequently hearing him complain. I declare I have no interest in the prosecution of his claim. Robert Duncan, Notary Public and Teacher. Sworn and subscribed to before me this 24th day of February A.D. 1884 and I certify that the contents were fully made known to affiant before signing and that I have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Harner late Co. F 29th Ills VV Infty. Invalid pension Claim No. 488002 and being by me duly sworn in regard to his claim as above stated. Declares his inability to furnish Surgeons affidavit as to treatment for alledged (sic) Pheumatism on account of the death of Surg. Charles C. Guard on the 4th day of April 1862 who treated him for said disabilities while in route from Ft. Donelson to Pittsburg Landing alias Shiloh, Tenn. Also is unable to furnish his family physicians affidavit as to his being sound & free from said disabilities prior to enlistment in 1861 by reason of the death of Dr. Sim who was the family physician of his widow mother Fanny Harner now Fanny Conley during his minority and up to date of his enlistment in Army Aug. 17th 1861. Post Office Address is Lusk, Pope Co., Ills. G.B. Harner. Sworn to and subscribed before me on this day and I certify said George B. Harner wrote his name to the foregoing affidavit before swearing and I further state that he is a credible citizen and is a truthful man bearing a good name and is respected by his neighbors as above reproach and highly esteemed as a Christian and further that he is now a Member of the United Baptist Church and speaks in Public and I do know he is a thorough Patriot and was a brave good soldier and comrade in the suppression of the Rebellion. I further declare I have no interest in this claim. Witness hand and seal this Feb 24th 1884. Robert Duncan, Notary Public. County Clerks Cer. On file in pen office in claim No. 172573 of R.S.       Affidavit of Coleman Duncan: "State of Illinois, Pope County} SS. In the matter of orig. invalid pension claim No. 485002 in which George B. Harner late Pri. Co. F 29th Regt Ills Vet Vols Infty. Is claimant personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and for the County and State above named, Coleman Duncan late Pri. In Co. F 29th Ill. Vols Infty. Whose age is 55 years whose Post office address is Golconda, Ills. well known to me and further who I certify to be a truthful citizen of the County of Pope and State of Ill. and further who is respected for truth and veracity who being by me duly sworn makes the following statement to wit. I was wll and intimately acquainted with George B. Harner prior to enlistment in the late war of 1861 and 1865 I knew as a neighbor living in the same county and vicinity that three years prior to enlistment and at date of enlistment and at the time of the company muster at Camp Bulter by the medical examiner of the U.S. on the 17th day of Aug. 1861 the said George B. Harner was a sound able bodied man free from any disease. I never knew of his being sick or even heard of his being treated for any childs fever or malarial disease prior to enlistment. I remember he was sick with measles at Cairo Ills in Oct 1861 and was treated for the same by Dr. Chas. C. Guard Surg. 29th Ills. vols. Infty in Camp McClernand. I further remember that when the penvales cents (?) were sent from Cairo to Fort Donelson after the battle, I was with them and when we arrived at the Regiment that the mortality and sickness from exposure was such that then was not Hospitals nor proper accommodation to care for the sick and wounded and they were sent away to Paducah Ky, Evansville, Ind, Mound City, Ills and many were sent home to Ills especially those of our Company that lived near the town of Golconda Ills from the fact of the Hospitality and free med. Treatment conducted by old Dr. Sim of Golconda and other citizens. I firmly believe the exposure of the engagements at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson Tenn was the cause of said soldiers disabilities and that I do know that Harner from that time until I was discharged in Aug 1864 often complained of the Rheumatism and pains caused by said exposure and I further state I have known him continuously from the date of his discharge in Nov 1865 to the present time and I know that he came out of the army laboring from disability and frequently complaining of Rheumatism. He is now about 40 years old and looks as though he might be 60 years, lean, pale, emaciated and broke down completely from the effects of his disabilities. I further declare I have no interest either direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim. Coleman Duncan. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 24th day of February A.d. 1884 and I certify that the contents of the same were fully made known to the affiant before signing: and that I have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. J.B. Floyd, Notary Public."

Affidavit of Robert Duncan: "Feb. 24th 1886. In answer to enclosed letter. I have known claimant since 1859 internally served with him as a soldier until discharged in 1865 located near him and was with him often during the period from his discharge for several years. I saw him immediately after his discharge at his home near where he now lives. He seemed to me to be suffering by his cough from throat or lung trouble. And complained of Rheumatism which I had often heard him speak of being troubled with during the time of our military service. I thought he was not able to perform a full days work at this time from the effects of his army service. And now, I think from his lean haggard appearance and at an age he ought to be in the prime of manhood. Presenting the appearance of an old decrepit man. Still, complaining that he is not able to perform more than one third of a days work compared to a stout healthy man. I further state that he is a quiet moral man and good citizen and that I know he was a good soldier for I was in rank with him at Fort Donelson, Tenn. and Shiloh, Tenn when he stood the fire. Respectfully yours. In F.C. & S., Golconda Post 332. G.A.R. Dept. Ills. Robert Duncan."
