Affidavit of Dr. Bozarth: "Stone Fort Saline Co. Ills. Dear Sir: In response to inquiry of Robert Duncan's Claim (No. 407370). In regard to seeing him immediately after his return from the army, I do not know just how long it was. I don't think it was very long, perhaps a month. The first I remember of speaking with him professionally he was laboring under disease of lungs. My first treatment and medical advice that I now remember of was I think in 1870 as well as my memory serves me now. I continued my medical advice at intervals up to 1879 and May since in 1880, but no sure he was moved at of my neighborhood. I saw him the 10th of this inst. For the first in some time. I give it as my opinion that he is not able to perform manual labor at all without doing him an injury. Neither has been at any time that I have professionally noticed him. When I say this I don't mean that he could not labor at all, but think it would be likely to increase his disability to that extent as to make him entirely disabled. Hopeing (sic) this Satisfactory. I am yours respectfully. J. Bozarth, M.D. He informed me that Dr. Sherod of Summerset P.O. Saline Co. Ills. Dr. Golden of Independence Saline Co. & Dr. J. Hetucker of New Liberty, Ills treated him. Dr. Bozarth, 407.370. Robert Duncan F, 29, Ills."

During your experience as a surgeon, did you ever treat a case of Disease of Lungs (the result of concussion on the air) caused by the firing of guns? Can you not call to mind how soon after June 26, 1863, you treated Mr. Duncan, for Disease of Lungs? Any early and circumstantial account of all matters of interest, in connection with this case, would be much appreciated by Yours respectfully. Dr. Saml L. Cheaney, Harrisburg, Ill} Wm. W. Dudley, Commissioner."
Letter of Dr. Cheaney: "Harrisburg, Ills. Jan 4th 1883. Hon. W.W. Dudley. Com. Pen. Washington, D.C. I regarded Duncan (?, word) free from any disease of lungs when he entered service. I did not treat him for any trouble of lungs until the Autumn of 1863, when he applied to me for treatment, complaining of serious trouble and pain in lungs. I cannot state the exact date, but think it must have been Oct. or Nov/63. Do not remember now, anything about concussion of his lungs. Nor, do I think I saw a case during my army experience which I regarded as concussion of lungs from the firing of guns. I do not think such was the case with Duncan. I treated Duncan before the war for Int. fever. In case of Duncans I am not very positive, but think now my diagnosis was "menanlgis of lungs". I remember ordering the cups place over the region of which he complained of great pain at times. I have heard him complain frequently since the war that his lungs weak or not sound through I have made no examination of them that I now remember. Respectfully &cm S.L. Cheaney, M.D."

The applicant states that he is now paid at the agency for a Three Fourths disability, on account of Diarrhoes, Rheumatism * and that he applies for increase on the ground that rating is too low *and piles. He states that he is 43 years of age, that he weighs 125 pounds, and that he is 5 feet 10 inches in height. His pulse-rate per minute is 90, his respiration 19, and his temperature 100 deg. F. The examination reveals the following conditions: No physical evidence of diarrhoea or results. His liver and sphleen are normal. His tongue us clean, a little too red, and smooth at the tip. No physical evidence of rheumatism. His muscles and joints are all symmetrical. His heart is sound. No abnormal sound can be heard over the valves. But the action of the heart is feeble. No piles internal or escternal. Rectum also anus are sound. On percussion over the lungs, the sound is flat over the entire back, except - at the lower border on either side, the sound is a little dull at the apex of both lungs in front. The balance of the lungs is fairly resonant. Respiration can be heard forced inspiration only over the back, and at the upper half on right side it cannot be heard at all. Respiration can be heard in front, but it is feeble. No rales (?) in any part of his lungs, and where respiration can be heard it is not interupted. His body is poor nourished. His muscles are soft. His general appearance is that of impaired health. The above rating is too low. Judging from the condition and history of the claimant, it is our opinion the disability was incurred in the service as claimed, and that it is not aggravated or protracted by vicious habits. We find the disability as above described to entitle him to a rating two thirds of total Third grade. Augustus DeFoe, Marion C. Dale, Valentine S. Benson, Examining Surgeon.       Reply from Robert Duncan: "Golconda, Pope County, Illinois. March 18st (sic) 1884. Hon. Commissioner Pensions. Dear Sir. I herewith return the enclosed requirements for the following reasons and should request that I be allowed to abandon any further prosecution for alledged (sic) disability. 1st I am unable to obtain Dr. F.F. Johnson, Asst. Surgeon testimony on account of a difficulty that originated between us in 1868 at Harrisburg Saline County Ills on account of politics and as I verily believe he still holds a grudge against me I can prove that he treated me at Fort Donaldson Tenn, Feb. 18 or 19th 1862 just after the battle for Diarrhea colds inflamation of bowels and bronchial affection in camp by Sergeant John L. Randolf and George B. Harner of Co. F 29th Ills. Inf. I would say that Dr. Johnson was County Supt of schools in Saline County. I was a teacher and organized a Grant Club at Independence Saline County Ills. and because I figured in Politics he tried to prevent me from teaching by witholding a Certificate and the consequences was I charged his battery at Harrisburg in the hall of the Court house and it ended in bad feeling to the present time. I further state I am not now bothered with the piles nor have I had the Rheumatism since last fall as bad as formerly owing to treatment. I am lean weak and the chief difficulty now is my lungs. I called a Physician this morning for treatment and he says both lungs have a cavity and that I am not getting what I am entitled to. I do not think Dr. Defoe and Dr. V.S. Benson did me justice. I know I have no Hospital record from the Battle of Fort Donalson. I came to Golconda Ills and was treated by Dr. Sim and afterwards by Dr. John Slucker both now dead until on or about 20th March 1862 just three days before the battle of Shiloh, Tenn. I reported to Capt. James Roper for duty. My neighbors D.W. Herod, Dr. William Pierce, William Dairman others are knowing to my inability to perform labor and I have been supported and my family by my little boy this winter where he should have been in school. There is nothing in this letter but what I will swear to as being the truth and the whole truth. I am with great respect yours, Robert Duncan, late Co. F 29th Ills. Vol. Inf & Notary Public."

Medical Exam for Increase of Pension: "No. 2 (3-110.) No. 2 INCREASE OF PENSION. (FOR A BOARD.) Claim No. 230.704. Name of claimant, Robert Duncan. Rank, Private. Company, F. Regiment, 29th Ill. Infy. Vol. Post-office address, Lusk, Ill. ADDRESS OF BOARD: Post office, Metropolis. County Massac. State, Ill. Date of examination, Nov. 19, 1884. WE HEREBY CERTIFY that in compliance with the requirements of the law* we have carefully examined this applicant, who states that he is now pensioned at a 2/3rd 3 Grade disability on account of Disease of lungs and that he claims an increased rating for the reason that present rating is unjustly low and that he is now disable to entire degree for earning his subsistence by manual labor. His pulse-rate per minute is 74; his respiration 19; his temperature 98; his height is 5 feet and 10 inches; he weighs 120 pounds, and he states that he is 45 years of age. Touching his disability and his reasons for asking an increase of pension, he makes the following statement: Continual acking pain throughout left chest. Troublesome cough with tough lumpy shuter, often containing blood. Frequent attacks hemerhages (sic) of lungs. All of which is easily incurred to prostration by bodily fatigue and weather changes. Has been unable to perform any manual labor on account of lung disease for past 3 years. Upon examining this applicant we find the following objective conditions which, in our judgement, do not entitle him to an increased rating: Badly emaciated, muscles soft and flabby, Slight loose cough, Sputa yellow & numulin (?). Voice harse and hollow. Prolonged expiration. In left cuper mammary, avil mammary (?, unreadable medical information). Heart normal. . Percussion normal. From the existing condition and the history of this claimant, as stated by himself, it is, in our judgement, probable that the disability was incurred in the service as he claims, and that it has not been prolonged or aggravated by vicious habits. He is, in our opinion, entitled to 12/18 3 Grade rating for the disability caused by lung dinan above, for that caused by_, and _ caused by _. The sum of which aggregates 12/18 of 3 Grade. J.W.
