Jeremiah Duncan and His Descendants

Jeremiah Duncan, born about 1750; married Rebecca --------; probably died after 1820. Jeremiah had a land grant in Botetourt Co. VA on 27 Aug. 1794, on the James River adj. Middleton and Baldwin (VA State Land Grants, from Charles Gordon, book and page not given); on 19 Dec. 1797 he and his wife Rebecca lived in Greene Co. TN when they gave a power of attorney to Martin McFaran or McFanan to make a deed to Jacob Carper or whoever was in possession of land on Catauba Creek for which Jeremiah had previously given his bond for 408 acres to John Walker; the deed was made 13 Feb. 1798 to Coonrad Swert or Scout for 100 acres adjoining Jacob Carpers land, part of the 148 acre grant to Jeremiah (Botetourt Co. VA Deed Book 6, pg. 429, 430).

Jeremiah Duncan bought land in Greene Co. TN in 1798 (Greene Co. TN Deed Book 6, pg. 322) and 1799 (Book 4, pg. 222). Jeremiah was on the tax list in Greene Co. TN from 1805 to 1816 and taxed on 175 acres by 1809 but had no tithable males in his household (tax lists); in 1815 he was called "Jeremiah Duncan Sr." On 27 Feb. 1809, he and his son Jeremiah (9.) signed a petition in Rhea Co. TN requesting an extension of time to procure warrants for their land ("Ansearchen News" Vol. 34, 1987, Summer, #2, pg. 63, from Alma Finney, Ruth Burns and Evelyn Sigler). He was probably in Overton Co TN in 1820 (pg. 12), he and wife over age 45; his son Joseph (8.) was also there (pg. 10).

He had a brother who was killed by the British near Norfolk, VA (1891 "Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Mississippi" by Goodspeed, pg. 671, for his grandson James M. Duncan, 6.1., from Evelyn Sigler). The 1891 "Memoirs of MS" named his children as George, Jerry, Amos, Benjamin, David and two daughters. His children were further identified in the estate of his son David (7.) in 1861 in Madison Co. AL, whose heirs were David's brothers and sisters and their children (Madison Co. AL Wills, from Vol. 133 of "AL Records" by Gandrud, pg. 95-97, from Evelyn Sigler).

TN; the cemetery has been destroyed and the land is now owned by Alcoa Aluminum Company who uses it as cow pasture (personal visit by Mrs. Mary Sutton). George was the eldest brother, and was left $1 by his brother David (7.) in 1852 (Madison Co. AL Wills, from Vol. 133 of "AL Records" by Gandrud, pg. 95-97, from Evelyn Sigler).

George was in Greene Co. TN from 1809 to 1814 (tax lists). This may be the George Dunkin who posted bond on 27 April 1808 for an illegitimate child born to Nancy Merridith (Greene Co. TN Court Minutes, pg. 131, from "TN Tidbits 1778-1914" Vol. 1, by Fischer, 1986, from Ruth Burns). He lived in Blount Co. TN in 1816 when he sold land in Greene Co. TN, witnessed by Jeremiah Duncan (Greene Co. TN Deed Book 11, pg. 169). He bought land in Blount Co. in 1821 from Joseph Hart (Blount Co. TN Deed Book 2, pg. 180). He was in Blount Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 291), 1840 (pg. 98), and 1850 (pg. 68). Blount W. Paul, age 13, b. TN, was in his household in 1850.

In 1853 he sold land to Grinsfield Taylor adjoining Mary Duncan (probably the widow of George 1.4.), Singleton, his old survey, and Edward Hart, witnessed by B.F. Duncan (1.5.) (Blount Co. TN (Bible), son of John Roddy who was born 1 May 1791 and died 28 April 1851 age 60 years in Blount Co. TN (Bible). Joseph Roddy died 20 June 1870 in Ringgold, GA, according to his Bible, but was listed as head of the household in the 1870 census taken 22 July 1870 (info of Alma Finney). Their Bible Record included a Duncan whose first name was not readable by the copiest, with the notation "died Oct.? 8th, 1856, Grove County, Tenn." The place of death must have been Greene Co. TN, but the person who died has not yet been identified. This may be the date of death of Margaret's father Jeremiah Duncan, whose will was probated in 1856 in Monroe Co. TN, since the bible contains the dates of birth and death of Joseph's father. The Bible was originally owned by Joseph Roddy, and was in existence in the 1930's and 1940's, but has since been lost (information and transcript of Bible record from Alma Finney).

Joseph Roddy has not been identified on the 1850 TN or GA census as the head of a household. In 1865, Joseph and Margaret J. Roddy of Catoosa Co.       --   There was another Benjamin Duncan, born about 1760 (1830-1840 census) in the area of Limestone and Madison Cos.       --   There was also a Jeremiah Duncan in Limestone Co. AL in 1820 on the state census, with a male and female over 21 and two males under 21 and four females under 21. It is possible this Jeremiah Duncan was related to the Duncans in Newberry and Laurens Co. SC; there is no indication he was related to Jeremiah Duncan Sr. of Greene Co. TN.

7.  David Duncan, born 1790 VA; married by 1815, wife unknown (Madison Co. AL Chancery Records, from Vol. 97, "AL Records" by Gandrud, pg. 38, from Donna Little and Evelyn Sigler).

He was in Madison Co. AL in 1815 when he bought land in Section 26, Twp. 4, Range 1W, at the Huntsville Land Office ("Old Land Records of Madison Co. 9.  Jeremiah Duncan; married but wife unknown; died between 1819 and 1823 in Rhea Co. TN. On 2 April 1808 Jeremiah Duncan and Daniel White witnessed a note from Frances Worley to Allen Massengale, which was the subject of a suit by William Baker against Worley in 1816 in Madison Co. AL Superior Court (Madison Co. AL Superior Court Records, pg. 550, from Vol. 80, "AL Records" by Gandrud, pg. 19, from Donna Little and Evelyn Sigler). Jeremiah was in Rhea Co. TN in 1808 when his land was surveyed (#13, Abstracts of Survey Book 1808-1810, from "TN Homesteaders and Landowners, Fourth Surveyors District; Anderson, Bledsoe, Campbell, Overton, Rhea and Roane Counties" by Hutcherson, pg. 36). On 27 Feb. 1809, Jeremiah Dunkin (9.) and Jeremiah Dunkin Sr. (his father) signed a petition in Rhea Co. requesting an extension of time to procure warrants for their land ("Ansearchen News" Vol. 34, 1987, Summer, #2, pg. 63, from Alma Finney, Ruth Burns and Evelyn Sigler). He bought lot 75 in the town of Washington, Rhea Co. TN in 1815 (Rhea Co. TN Deed Book D, pg. 131) and bought 2,500 acres on the Tennessee River in 1819 (Book E, pg. 252).

In 1823, Jeremiah Duncan's heirs were taxed on 1000 acres on the Tennessee River and on one town lot ("Ansearchen News" Vol. 11). In court in Aug. 1839, Hiram Worly was guardian of Jeremiah's minor heirs Nancy, the wife of Caswell G. Taylor, and George W. Duncan ("Ansearchen News" Vol. 30, #2, 1983, pg. 182, from Evelyn Sigler); his estate was settled with "two of the minor heirs" on 6 April 1840 (Rhea Co. TN Will Book A, pg. 425). Jeremiah Duncan was left $1 in the will of his brother David Duncan (7.) in 1852 (Madison Co. AL Wills, from Vol. 133 of "AL Records" by Gandrud, pg. 95-97, from Evelyn Sigler). Two of his children were identified in court records, a third is possible, and there may be more who are still unidentified. See comments under Hiram Duncan (Sec. I, 8.7.2.) and John Duncan (Sec. I, 8.7.3.), listed as children of William Duncan (Sec. I, 8.7.).

9.1.  David Duncan may be a son; on 24 March 1829, Jonathan Fine was the guardian for his heirs in a suit against William Johnson and John Day for $253, which was recovered by Fine from Johnson and Day (Rhea Co. TN Circuit Court Minute Book B, pg. 178; from index from Ruth Burns).

9.3.  George W. Duncan, born before 1821; his guardian Hiram Worley settled his share of his father's estate in Aug. 1839, when George must have been over 18; Worley filed George's receipt with the court in April, 1840 ("Ansearchen News" Vol. 30, #2, 1983, pg. 182, from Evelyn Sigler; Rhea Co. TN Will Book A, pg. 425). This may be the George W. Duncan, born 1820 TN, who died age 30 in April 1850 in Carter Co. TN from scorfula (mortality schedule); he married Phennette or Fennetta Peoples on 3 Sept. 1844 in Carter Co. TN. Fennetta was born 1823 TN, and was in Carter Co. TN in 1850 (pg. 175) with George W.
