St Mary's
Church, Dumfries is the site of a much earlier church.
This small hill was the location of the medieval
chapel of the Holy Rood. It was here that
Christopher Seatoun, brother-in-law to Robert the
Bruce, was executed by Edward I for assisting Bruce in
his campaign to gain the Scottish throne. |
This
church and graveyard, like St Michael's, the other
main Dumfriesshire graveyard, is on a raised site
within retaining walls. |
It is here
that many inmates of the former CRI mental asylum.
the Crichton Royal Institute, are buried. |
