Silas gave a deposition, at the age of sixty years, 10 months and 14 days, on June 20, 1820 to the Steuben co Officials. Along with his witnesses - George Gardner, commisioner & Wm Millinax, Silas declared that he had enlisted in 1777 in the company Comanded by James Black, in Col. William Malcom's Regiment of the Infantry belonging to the New York ?line?. He further declared that he was then transferred from Col. Malcolm's regiment to Col. Spencer's regiment of the Jersey ?line? [a regiment] that during part of the time was commanded by Capt. Bull [?Bell?] and that he couldn't remember who was the commender the rest of the time. His pension certificate number was 15101.

In a deposition given two years earlier the enlistment date looks like April 16th, 1778 at Fort Montgomery. He named the same commanding officers, but he called it the 'Independant Regiment of Infantry.' Then in May of 1780, he transferred to Col. ?Sherman's? Regiment, ?Gen? Maxwell's Brigade, and remained with him till he was discharged April 16, 1781 "at Windham in the state of New Jersey having served the United States for three years." That he was in the battle of ?Mermouth? and several other skirmishes. Witness Wm Mullinax confirms the previous (and he was a Seargeant in the same regiment), butclaims April 1777 to1780.

I have considerable info on his estate and SOMEWHERE more info on his military service. I will transcribe it all as I find it! LOL!

Researchers seem to think the children were in the order as I list them, beginning with William as the oldest. I have yet to discover why they believe that...They also seem to suspect that Abigail wasn't Silas' first wife...quite probable... but she wa quite probably OUR Silas Jr.'s mother.
