About the Högberg name
Peter and Sven Svensson and their father, Sven Olafsson, took the name Högberg when they came to America from Sweden. Sven eventually shortened his to Hoberg. Peter's grave marker and that of his son, Olaf, list Hegberg. Högberg translates literally as "high mountain".
The Family in Sweden
The family came from Funnäsdalen in Tännäs parish of Jämtland, which is very close to the Norwegian border. This mountainous region was a mining area and is now a nice summer resort area. Tännäs is well-known for its fine fishing.

They set sail on the Fregatskibet Neptunus from Trondheim, Norway on May 2 and arrived in Quebec, Canada on Jun 19. They travelled by train to Chicago, IL and then took another train to Minneapolis, MN. We then lost track of them for a while, though they might have spent some time at Fonda, Pocahontas Co, IA.
The 1875 census for Douglas Twp, Dakota Co, MN shows P.O. (Sven), Sarah (Sigrid), Peter and Mary Hogberg. The 1880 census shows Peter and Mary Hogberg with son Swan and father Swan. Cannon River church records at the Cannon Falls, MN library say that Peter married Mary (or Märeth) Carlson on 29 Nov 1875, but they don't mention where. They also say that Mary arrived in the area in 1876, which was an estimate after the fact. Their first two children in 1878 and 1879 died young, but their next in 1882 and 1883 lived to a ripe old age.
The 1879 Dakota County Platbook shows that Peter farmed in Section 25 of Douglas Twp right across the road from Cannon Falls Twp, Goodhue Co. Peter died there only six years later, shy of his forty-second birthday. Here is a photo of the farm 121 years later.
Son Sven married Maret Ahlness 10 Dec 1872 at Spring Garden Lutheran Church in Leon Twp, Goodhue Co, MN. They had nine children, one of which died as an infant. The births seem to have taken place in Nebraska, except for one in Minnesota and one in Pepin Co, WI. The family then lived in Spring Brook, ND before homesteading in Saskatchewan in 1909. Sven died there one year later at the age of sixty-three.
