George Betterley was born in 1769, probably in Boston, MA. He was the son of Thomas Betterley (1723-1775) and Elizabeth Carson (1732-1775). He moved from Woodstock, VT to Brookline, NH in 1815, where he built a fulling mill. He first married Lucy Hodgkins with whom he had a son, Asa. He then married Sarah A. H. Baily and had children Sally and George. His third wife was Hannah Lee.
