Bonde and Mary (Carlsson) (Högberg) Dahlberg family

Mary Carlsson (Högberg) with second husband Bonde Dahlberg and children Olaf Emmanuel Högberg, Martha Selma Christine Högberg, and Esther Victoria Dahlberg

About the Carlson name

Görn Karlsson Elsberg (b. 15 Apr 1818) was the son of Carl Elsberg and grandson of Görn Elsberg. However, he used the name Carlsson when he emigrated to McGregor, IA from Sweden in Apr 1870.

The Family in Sweden

The family moved from Ljusnedahls to Tännäs in Jämtland after the marriage of Görn Karlsson Elsberg to his second wife. They emigrated in April of 1870 from Tännäs, which is very close to the Norwegian border. This mountainous region was a mining area and is now a nice summer resort area. Tännäs is well-known for its fine fishing.

The family was listed as George, Betsey, Mary, Sarah, and Carl Carlisson in Mendon Twp, Clayton Co, IA in the 1870 census. They were listed as John, Britta, and Carl Karlson in Mendon Twp in the 1880 census. John Carlson was listed alone in the 1885 census, and his name was listed as John Collson in Clayton County land records. He owned 8½ acres in section 10 of Mendon Twp south of McGregor. I found no death records for John or Betsey.

Mary married Peter Högberg and was living with him and his parents in Douglass Twp, Dakota Co, MN during the 1875 Minnesota Census. Sarah married Carl Martin Lock in 1878 in Crawford County, WI and was living with him in Wyalusing Twp, Grant Co, WI in 1880. She was suffering from Mervons Debility in that census, and I know that she died before 1900. There is, however, no death or burial record for her in Grant County.

After Peter died in 1885, Mary sought assistance from her brother. Carl was a policeman in McGregor, IA. Being but a young man himself, he apparently refused to help. Mary returned to Minnesota and eventually married Bonde Dahlberg. I have, however, found no proof that Carl was a policeman and do not know what happened to him after 1880. Do you?
