Alfred W. Betterley was probably born in 1824 in Otsego County, NY. He was the son of George Betterley (1790-1858) and Dimmis Whipple (1792-1864). He moved from Milford Twp, Otsego Co, NY to Mt. Pleasant Twp, Wabasha Co, MN in 1856, where he served as one of the first town constables. He later moved to Maiden Rock Twp, Pierce Co, WI in the 1870s.

Mary (Crandall) Betterley gravestone (1829-1852)Alfred first married Mary Crandall (1829-1852), daughter of Robert Crandall (1791-1860) and Rebecca Ransom (1797-1871), probably in the mid-1840s. They had two children, Dimmis and George. Mary is buried in the Millford churchyard in Otsego Co, NY. [photo by John de Marrais]

Maranda (Crandall) (Betterley) Clark 1837-1909Alfred then married Mary's sister, Maranda Crandall (1837-1909). They are said to have married in 1852, though Mary didn't die until December of 1852. They apparently had at least five children; Alfred, William, Frank, Byron, and Mary. They were listed together in the 1870 Wabasha Co, MN census, but Maranda married John Calvin Clark 15 Sep 1871 near her son Alfred's home in Illinois. I assume she and Alfred divorced in 1870 or 1871. Maranda is buried in the Ono Methodist Cemetery in Pierce Co, WI. [photo by Loren Dahling]

Fannie (Taylor) (Betterley) (Bulmer) Brownlee 1851-1937Alfred then married Fannie Taylor (1851-1937) sometime after 1870. She was the daughter of Phillip (aka Casper) Taylor. They had two children, Amelia and Joseph. After Alfred's death, Fannie married Andrew Bulmer and then Joseph Brownlee. She is buried at Poplar Hill Cemetery in Rock Elm, Pierce Co, WI. From the River Falls Journal 22 Jan 1880:

Mr. A. Betterley a well known and highly respected farmer of this place met with a fatal accident on the 17th. As he was passing down Rush River himself and team were suddenly precipitated over the bank of the road some twenty feet thereby fracturing his skull from the effects of which he died Sunday morning.

From the Pierce County Herald 21 Jan 1880:

Alfred Betterley was thrown down an embankment near Francis White's by the overturning of his sleigh last Saturday and so badly injured that he died yesterday morning.
