Figure TR-1. My great grandfather, Thomas W. Russell, the younger, (1847-1928). Though not known for certain, Thomas' middle name might be William. But until I have the confirming document in hand, I will refer to Thomas W. Russell as "the younger", as he was referred to as a witness on his older brother's marriage registration. The appellation also distinquishes him from his father who was also named Thomas Russell (the elder). | |
Fig. TR-2. My great grandmother, Ellen Hartley (1845-abt 1892). Studio was imprinted on reverse of photo as "J. Turner, Leeds, England". Photo probably taken in 1860's. |
Fig. TR-3. Thomas W. Russell, the younger, and Ellen Hartley, and their children: Nicholson and Jane Ann ("Jenny"). Photo taken by Studio of Bolko Schmiechen, Sunderland and West Hartlepool, England. Photo was taken about 1880, judging from age of "Jenny" who was born in Durham County, England, Sep, 1879. Note toy horse at feet of Ellen. Thomas and Ellen had 7 children of which 5 lived to adulthood. When this photo was taken, Thomas and Ellen had already lost their first two children, Jane Ann and Alma Emma. As was common in their day, newborn children were often named after a child that had died earlier. In Thomas' family, Jane Ann was used twice for a child's name. |
