Thanks to Jan we who have a connection to the Volturnos last voyage now have a place to go to to help find information about our forefathers. After searching and seeking for many many years Jan was able to put together this wonderful web page so the story of our ancesters will not fade into history. GREAT JOB JAN AND THANK YOU SO MUCH. ...Arnie |

My father, four of his siblings, and my Grandmother all survived the Volturno disaster. The additional information that I've found on your website has given me a clear picture of how the family was separated at sea. Also, there are enough new clues so that now I'm hoping to solve the puzzle of how they were reunited. Thank you Jan for your dedication and hard work. |

My grandmother Leocadia Wojciak was a steerage passenger;rescued by the Rappahannock and taken to Halifax, Nova Scotia. She was detained ther for several months then allowed to enter the US. Her married name was Louise Przytulski and she raised her family in Blawnox, Pennsylvania. I am searching for the reason she was detained in Canada for so long. |

My mother is presently 95 years old and is in excellent health. She was between 7 and 8 years old and remembers the incident well. Her family was the only family who survived as a whole unit. It is just one more page of the immigrants sagas who came to the U.S. This incident and the uniqueness of their rescue was in the World papers. Instead of jumping into lifeboats that were provided, her mother pulled them out and said, "Let the water come to us, we will not go to the water" All of the people who went into the lifeboats that evening drowned because of the high seas. This is how the entire family survived. We will keep checking this site for more information. |

My great-aunt was a survivor of the Volturno disaster. A few years ago I did some research myself on the incident and did a long videotaped interview with my aunt. She turns 95 in a few weeks and still remembers every detail! Thanks for updating this important event. My grandmother was on that ship and had she not been saved, I would not be writing this today!! |

After reading this web site and learning more about the disaster we went to our library and got the microfilm of The New York Times for Oct.12, 1913 through the 30th and found many articles, stories about the disaster. It was major news of the day and was in the headlines for the first few days and took up pages and pages of the paper. We were also able to see the names of the survivors on each of the rescuing ships and also saw my husband's father's name listed on the SS Grosser Kurfuerst. |

I just learned that my father, David Karpofsky was a passenger on the Volturno. I believe he was rescued by the Grosser Kurfurst but I couldn't find him on that ship's manifest. I would like to see the original manifest of the Volturno as I would like to find out who he was coming to in NY and who he had left behind in Russia. |

My father, Konstantin Christuk, immigrated from the village of Dudari, White Russian,on the Volturno, one year before the ship's disastrous fire at sea in 1913. I have read an article about that sea disaster in a newspaper, dated 1913, that there were suspicions of sabotage by a competing ship line. Yours is an informative and interesting site. |
