Crossland spelling variations complicated my research for several years!
The Variations: There were several variations in the spelling of the Crossland surname. Why? Were they the same people? Were they my ancestors? (Pg 2)
Old English "s": The Old English long (or leading) "s" character was used in Crossland renderings before around 1800. It looked like a cursive "f" or "p". How many legitimate records had I ignored because the spelling looked like Crofsland or Croplin, for example? Quite a few, unfortuanately! (Pg 3)
Spelling Explanations: In the end, explanations for the spelling variations were obvious and simple. (Pg 4)
Lessons Learned: There were some!! (Pg 5)
