David COCHRAN Cemetery also known as the COCHRAN-GILLIS Cemetery |
This work was done by Mr. Frank Broderick and donated to me for use on this website. Please email him at [email protected] for permission before using in any manner. I am sure that he would not mind but it is always nice to ask before taking and please make sure to give him credit where credit is due. He has done a lot of work in restoring and maintaining many gravesites and to him we all owe many thanks. Thank you, Mr. Broderick for passing this on and for taking care of those who have gone before us. God willing, I will try to keep up the good work that you have started and if I should go, I pray that someone will step in my place and continue the effort for all our family lines. Below is Mr. Broderick's words with the exception of that, that is in parenthesis.
David COCHRAN, b. 7 Aug. 1779, d. 21 Jan. 1819 was the son of Abraham COCHRAN, b. 24 May 1757, d. 8 Oct. 1818, and Catharine BUTLER b. 17 Jan. 1781. Catharine was the daughter of Joshua BUTLER and Susan GREEN and the sister of William BUTLER.
Today the property is owned by Mrs. Joyce MCCALL and permission is needed to enter. (I will contact Mrs. McCall for permission to give phone number and once granted, will post number here.) It is my belief that the area of the graves once belonged to Abraham then to David COCHRAN. Apparently David's homesite was near the cemetery but no sign of it remains today.
From the Court House in Troy, (Montgomery Co. NC), take Hwy. 24/27 east toward Biscoe. About four blocks from the Court House turn right on the Candor road (County Road 1554) and go about 2.5 miles to the Little River then continue a short way, about a mile, to the intersection of the road to Capelsy. Turn right and pass several houses to a large white house with a long straight driveway. This is the home of Mrs. Joyce McCall. She will direct you to go back part of the way to her barn beside the road. Enter thru the gate, then close it, and go straight past a small pond then cross the creek to he pasture on the other side. To the right about 300 yards is an island of hardwood trees within which is a fence surrounding about 25 graves. I had the fence installed in 1995 and had several new granite headstones made because the old ones were almost weathered away or destroyed. A list of graves is attached.
The topographic coordinates are: 39 05 45 X 6 04 07
CAUTION! If there has been a heavy rain you may not be able to drive across the creek in the pasture. A 4-wheel drive is recommended but at times not required.
This cemetery was cleaned up, repaired and fenced on November 9, 1994 by Mr. Frank Broderick, the author above.
