Halloween Tragedy

Halloween festivities turned deadly Sunday afternoon in Nacogdoches County. An 11-year-old sixth grader died from either a fall or strangulation while decorating for Halloween. Tyler Martinez was in a tree with a rope. He fell from the tree and got tangled in the rope.

His death was explained to Tyler's classmates Monday morning at Central Heights Elementary. Tyler had attended school there since pre-k. Elementary principal Tona Clevenger said, "Tyler was a straight-A student. He participated in UIL. He liked a challenge. He wouldn't mind arguing with you to express his point of view. [He was] just a real likable young man and he'll be sorely missed." Counselors were brought in to help Tyler's classmates through their grief.

Tyler's mother is a single mom and military veteran. She has planned a memorial service in Tyler's memory for November 9th. Laird-McGill Funeral Home in Nacogdoches is handling the arrangements.¹
