John Matthew Smock began military service in May 1863 serving in the Army during the Civil War. He ended military service in October 1863; upon which he volunteered with the O.N.G. (Ohio National Guard?) and served four (4) months in the Shenendoah Valley under General Siegle when he was honorably discharged and returned home. He was a farmer before 1872 at Shawnee, Ohio. He was a teamster (teaming at Five Mile Furnace south of Logan, Hocking County and later at XX Furnace, Shawnee, Fairfield County after 1872 at Five Mile Furnace. 3. [S5] Newspaper article (Fulton/Morrison, 4 Sep 1968) regarding the Hollinshead Family in Ustick Township., 4 Sep 1968, excerpt: The family included eight children and two of them, Joshua and Daniel, acquired land including the homestead. They lived most of their lives in Ustick.
They were absent in early days on hunting-and-trapping trips. In 1858, they made such a journey to Iowa and kept a diary of their experiences. The beginning was inauspicious:
'We hitched up our horse and started and got as far as the corner of the house and it looked like rain; so we unhitched and put the horse back in the stable. It rained most of the day.'
They started again the next day. A week later they returned the horse and bought a skiff. Eventually they went up the west branch of the Des Moines River and squatted in a cabin for the winter. They were 36 miles from Fort Dodge.
The brothers trapped otters, foxes, raccoons, minks, and wolves. Food became scarce (line lost here) breakfast. It was not bad but tasted 'coony.' Their Christmas dinner was beaver tail and adjudged it 'better than pork.'
In January, they shot a deer, caught a big owl which they kept for a pet, filed two land claims and built foundations for homes thereon, sold a couple of wolf pelts and lived on beaver tails.
There was a blizzard on April 2, 1859, and on April 7, they started down the river. They portaged to the Skunk River and returned to the Mississippi River. They carried otter pups in the boat for pets.
After a winter on the plains, Joshua commented philosophically on foxes and wolves, comparing them to people. 'The fox is an eastern animal and there is about the same difference in them that is in the eastern folks and the western.' - Bastian Newspaper Article, 1968.
