Sir Thomas Smythe was buried in Ashford Church, Kent, England. "Mr. Thomas Smythe's monument is on the south-east side of the south transept in Ashford Church. The recumbent figures of the Customer and Dame Alice, his wife, are admirably carved in alabaster. The head of Smythe has a peaked beard and closefitting cap, and the features are those of an able and cultivated gentleman; his dress that of a well-to-do merchant, with doublet, hose, and furred gown; his hands are raised, holding a book, which he appears to be reading. The features of his wife strike one as being rather Flemish in character, on her head she wears a coif or cap. Both effigies rest on a raised monument under an arch springing from imposts, the soffit of which is richly ornamented, flanked with Corinthian columns on short pedestals, supporting an enriched architrave, swelled frieze and cornice, surmounted with an open balustrading, pedestals, and obelisks. In the centre is a square coffer, carved, and enriched with the arms of the Smythes, surmounted with the helmet and crest. In bas-relief, on the face of the monument below, are the effigies of the children—six sons and six daughters."3 He was born in 1522 at Leeds Castle, Kent, England. The younger son.1,2,4 He was the son of John Smythe Sr. and N. N. Brounker.3 Sir Thomas Smythe witnessed the will of John Smythe Sr. in 1538 at Corsham, Wiltshire, England; Left a life interest in his mill to his wife, with the reversion of it to his older son John, as well as his other property. To Thomas, his younger son, he left a farm in the Hundred of Amesbury, Wiltshire, of the value of £20 per annum.3 Sir Thomas Smythe left, in the estate of his late father, a farm with the value of £20 per annum in 1538 at Hundred of Amesbury, Wiltshire, England.3 He married Alice Judd, daughter of Lord Mayor Andrew Judd and Alice Murfin, before 1555.5 Sir Thomas Smythe was a witness where Lord Mayor Roland Hayward appointed executor to his father-in-law, Thomas Smythe's, estate on 22 May 1591 at London, England.3 Sir Thomas Smythe was a witness where Katherine Smythe recieved in the estate of her father £500 to be divided among her children on 22 May 1591.3 Sir Thomas Smythe left a will on 22 May 1591 at 33 Eliz; To his wife Dame Alice he leaves his lease and interest in his messuage and tenement in London, for the term of her natural life, together with all his household stuff therein, providing she does not marry. ...
