His army, gathered in the west, was prevented from advancing by floods of the Wye and Severn rivers and soon dispersed. He went into hiding, was betrayed by one of his retainers, tried as a traitor, and beheaded.3 He did not achieve political prominence until the death of Edward IV in 1483.3

John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln was the son of John (de la Pole), 2nd Duke of Suffolk and Lady Elizabeth of York.1 John de la Pole, Earl of Lincoln was created, his father then living, Earl of Lincoln in 1466/67 at 7 Edward IV.2 He obtained several important grants of land, and was appointed lord-lieutenant of Ireland in 1483/84 at 1 Richard III.2 He was firmly committed to the house of York and on the triumph of Henry VII of the Tudors he removed to the court of his aunt Margaret, Duchess of Burgundy in 1485/86.2 He returned to England to fight the cause of the imposter Lambert Simnel.2 He died on 16 June 1487 at the Battle of Stoke, Nottinghamshire, England. Marching towards Newark-upon-Trent, his army of four thousand German mercenaries encountered the royal army, and sustained a signal defeat, himself falling in the conflict. d.v.s.p.2
