[incomplet].5 Also called Giovanni Acuto.6 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood was born circa 1320 at Hawkwood Manor, Sible Hedingham, near Colchester, Essex, England.2 He was christened at Gosfield, Essex, England; Given the same name as an older brother. (The Wrights of Kelvedon had three sons named John.). He was the son of Gilbert Hawkwood.2 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood witnessed the will of Gilbert Hawkwood in 1340; In his will, Gilbert provided for his elder son John, Agnes and Jane who were already married, Alice and Margaret who had yet to find husbands, and Nicholas, who would become a priest. The younger John, was appointed executor, received a modest legacy, and like the other unmarried members of the family, was to be maintained in the home of his brother for a year. Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood settled on a career in soldiery and learned the "soldiers craft" during the Hundred Year's War in the army of Edward III of England circa 1343.7 Hundred Years War - English, under Edward III, invade Normandy, defend at Créçy where they defeat the french, killing 4,000 at a loss of 100, after which English advanced to Calais. On 26 August 1346 at the Battle of Créçy, Normandy, France.8 He fought with the Black Prince on 26 August 1346 at the Battle of Créçy, Normandy, France.9 He married N. N. (?) before 1351; His 1st. Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood was sacked Provence at the head of his own company of men in 1353 at France. He fought with the Black Prince at the Battle of Poitiers in 1356.9 He distinguished himself well enough during the French-English wars to have a knighthood conferred upon him in the field in 1356.7 He was called "A poor knight," by Froissart, "having gained nothing but his spurs" circa 1360.2 He fought in the Battle of Brignais in April 1362. He was first employed in Italy by the city of Pisa, with his former company of men, who insisted that he be named as Captain-General, in January 1364.10 He lodged at Martino's Inn, most like with his nameless first wife, a house respectable enough for the Emperor's daughter to stay when she passed through a year or so later, at Florence, Italy.11 He led the troops of Pisa against the city of Florence in 1364. He witnessed the marriage of Lionel, "of Antwerp," Duke of Clarence and Violante Visconti on 28 May 1368 at the Church of St Maria Maggiore, Milan, Italy; Her 1st.12 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood was made an honorary citizen in 1375 at Lucca, Italy.13 He had already two small sons, whom he had to ransom from the Bolognese before 1377.11 He performed per his contract, and on the insistence of the papal legate, Robert of Geneva, and systematically sacked the town and massacred the inhabitants (though even a hostile chronicler concedes that Hawkwood himself, "not to be held entirely infamous, sent about a thousand of the woman to Rimini.") circa January 1377 at Cesena, Italy.14 He was went over to the anti-papal league, and was employed as a mercenary by the Viscontis of Milan before May 1377. He married Donnina Visconti, daughter of signore di Milano Bernabò Visconti and Porina Porro, in May 1377 at Milan, Italy; His 2nd. "The wedding was honored by the presence of the lady duchess, and all the daughters of Signor Bernabo. Jousting was in progress all day in the house of John, the former residence of the late Bishop of Parma. There was no dancing out of respect for the late lady Taddea."15,6 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood honeymooned with Donnina in Cremona, a city that happened to be militarily convenient for the military preparations involved in his next assignment in June 1377.16 He was recognized as the foremost commander in Italy, earning him an income of some 250,000 florins a year in 1378. He was employed as a mercenary by Pope Gregory XI in 1378. He was employed lastly by the city of Florence which forgave him for his earlier attack against them in 1380. He was appointed as one of three Englishmen empowered to sign commercial agreements with Florence and other Italian cities, Sir "Johannes Haukewood" was named first on 6 February 1385 at Westminster, England.17 He was a witness where Carlo Visconti returned from Germany on hearing of his father's capture and enlisted with his brother-in-law, John Hawkwood, after 6 May 1385.18 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood fought his "greatest battle, a triumph of his old age" at the Battle of Castagnaro for Padua against Verona on 11 March 1387.19 He fought, and won, one of his last battles, this against the Milanese condottiere Jacopo dal Verme in 1390 at Bologna, Italy.20 He was made honorary citizen, the same privilege to be extended to his male descendants, on 8 April 1391 at Florence, Italy.21 He executed a masterful advance against the Milanese, then retreat, at which the Milanese defeated the French army, and this action "won him more famethan his greatest victories" between 15 May 1391 and 25 July 1391.22 He witnessed the engagement of Conrad Prospergh and Catherine Hawkwood circa November 1392.23 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood was unable or unwilling to foot the bill for an entire wedding for his daughter Elizabeth, but his wife Donnina later managed to make the wedding possible, in November 1392. He witnessed the marriage of Conrad Prospergh and Catherine Hawkwood on 20 January 1393 at Florence, Italy.24 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood sold his estate at Poggibonsi circa February 1394.17 He died on 17 March 1394 at Florence, Tuscany, Italy. Died of a stroke sometime during the night. Even unto the end, always considering himself and Englishman, he had been arranging to return to England, only resolving the issue of his annuities had kept him in Florence.25 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood was buried in Florence, Italy. His body lay in state beside the font in the Baptistery of San Giovanni. On the occasion, the whole of Florence turned out, including even the Signoria who ignored protocol to attend.26 Sir John "Il Condottiere" Hawkwood was buried in the Parish Church, Sible Hedingham, Essex, England. On the request of King Richard II of England to the Signoria of Florence, John Hawkwoods remains were transferred to his homeland, and buried in the church of the town in which he was born. Donnina accompanied the remains, as did young John, who may have remained in England. His tomb is no longer there but was said to have depicted both of his wives, perhaps this detail at the insistence of his second, Donnina.27
