He served in expeditions into France under John of Gaunt.4 He was a Founder member of the Order of the Garter, #7, circa 1347/48.4 He married Philippa de Montagu, daughter of William de Montagu, King of the Isle of Man and Catharine, Countess of Salisbury, circa 1350 at Donyatt, Somerset, England.8,9 Roger de Mortimer, 2nd Earl of March died on 26 February 1359/60 at Rouvray, Cote-d' Orleans, France, at age 31 years, 3 months and 15 days.      Elizabeth de Clare was born on 16 September 1295 at Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire.3 She was the daughter of Gilbert "the Red Earl" (de Clare), 6th Earl of Gloucester and Hertford and Joan (of Acre), Countess of Gloucester and Hertford.2,3 Elizabeth de Clare married John de Burgh, son of Richard "the Red Earl" de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster and Margaret de Burgo, before 1312; Her 1st.4 Elizabeth de Clare was co-heiress to her brother, Gilbert de Clare, Knt., 7th Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, by which she inherited the honour of Clare, Suffolk in 1314.3 She had the Castle of Ludlow, as the 4th co-heiress in 1316.4 She married Theobald, 2nd Lord Verdun, son of Theobald, 1st Lord Verdun and Margery de Bohun, on 4 February 1315/16 at near Bristol; His 2nd. Her 2nd (widow). He married against the King's will and without his license.4,3 Elizabeth de Clare refounded University Hall at Cambridge University under the name of Clare Hall, and gave it the rectory of Great Gransden, Huntingdonshire in 1338.3 She died on 4 November 1360 at age 65 years, 1 month and 19 days. She died testate.3 Elizabeth de Clare was buried in St. Mary's, Ware, Hertfordshire. She was buried with her 3rd husband.3

He was born in 1302 at Essex, England.1 He was the son of Sir John de Coggeshall and Sara le Brun.1 Sir John de Coggeshall held the Manor of Coggeshall by subinfudation "of the abbots of Coggeshall and Westminster," managing the Manor of Coggeshall for the monks after 1319.2 Lord of Coggeshall at Essex between 1319 and 1361.1 He accompanied a party on the king's service to the papal court at Avignon in 1320.1 He summoned to perform military service against the Scots in July 1322.1 He served Edward II militarily between 1323 and 1330.1 He married Margaret de Stanton, daughter of Humphrey de Stanton, before 1328.1 Sir John de Coggeshall held important offices like those of sheriff and escheator, both Crown appointments, knight of the shire in parliament, justice, and on numerous local commissions between 1330 and 1361 at Essex.1 He served in parliament as one of the two knights of the shire for Essex between 1334 and 1336.1 He first appointed sheriff, serving five years, between November 1334 and 1338 at Essex.1 He was called upon to conscript two hundred archers for the Scottish war in 1335 at Essex.1 High Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire between 1336 and 1349.1 He was knighted by Edward the Black Prince in 1337.1 He served again in parliament as knight of the shire for Essex in 1339.1 He again appointed sheriff, serving between May 1340 and January 1341 at Essex.1 He served a third time in parliament as knight of the shire for Essex in 1343.1 He appointed sheriff yet again, serving his third time between November 1343 and May 1348 at Essex.1 He was involved with the defense of the English coastline during Edward III's Crecy and Calais campaign in 1346/47.1 He served as justice of the peace, on the a commission especially notable in that it allowed the justices to determine as well as hear cases of felony and trepass, in 1351.1 He appointed sheriff yet again, an unprecedented appointment as such long tenures of the office were unusual and contrary to the statute of 1340 which stipulated that the sheriff was to hold the office for a year only, and he served his fourth term between November 1352 and November 1354 at Essex.1 High Sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire between 1353 and 1356.1 He was called upon by the Crown to gather two hundred pigs, sixty weys of cheese, forty carcasses of beef, etc., which were to be sent to Calais to feed the soldiers in 1355.1 He served as justice of the peace a second time in 1356.1 He served a fourth time in parliament as knight of the shire for Essex in 1358.1 He died in June 1361 at age 59 years. He died, possibly, from the Plague brought about in the second great outbreak of the Black Death.1 His estate was probated on 26 June 1361 at 35 Edward II; The Inquest Post Mortem (similar to our probate inventory), showed that Sir John held the manors of Sutton, Beneflete, Coldham, Coggeshall, Samhill, Hokewell, Ailsford, Fratyng and Thoriton, Pagesham, and Roghir, in addition to lands in the towns of Bokkyngg (Bocking) and Feryngg (Feering), co. Essex, all of which went to his eldest son.1

The 4th of four sons.1 He was the son of William, Lord Montagu and Elizabeth de Montfort.1,2 Governor of the Castle of Werk Edward de Montagu had livery of all those lands which descended to his wife Alice, daughter and co-heir of Thomas Brotherton, Earl of Norfolk, fifth son of Edward I, in 1330 at 23 Edward III.1 He married Alice Plantagenet, daughter of Thomas, "of Brotherton," Earl of Norfolk and Alice de Halys, before 16 January 1339.3 Governor of the Castle of Werk Edward de Montagu was summoned to Parliament in 1348.2 He murdered Alice Plantagenet between 14 November 1351 and 30 January 1352 at Bungay, Suffolk, England; She died of wounds recieved as a result of an assault by her husband.4 Governor of the Castle of Werk Edward de Montagu died in July 1361.2
