Also called King William of the Isle of Man. Arms: Gules, three legs conjoined in the fesse point in armor proper garnished and spurred or.2 Also called de Montagu.3 William de Montagu, King of the Isle of Man was born circa 1304 at Cassington, Oxfordshire, England. The 2nd of four sons.4,5 He was the son of William, Lord Montagu and Elizabeth de Montfort.1 William de Montagu, King of the Isle of Man was made a banneret in the end of the reign of Edward II circa 1325.6 He was present at the expedition made into Scotland in 1327 at 1 Edward III. He married Catharine, Countess of Salisbury, daughter of William, 1st Lord Grandison and Sibella de Tregoz, in 1327 at Cassington, Oxfordshire, England.4,6,7 William de Montagu, King of the Isle of Man attended when the King was summoned to do homage to the King of France for his duchy of Aquitaine in 1329 at 3 Edward III.6 He was appointed governor of Sherbourne Castle in the County of Dorset, and of the Castle of Corffe with the Chace of Purbeck in 1330.6 He again attended the King to France, and had also the honor to wait on his holiness the Pope with Bartholomew de Burgherth, as Edward's ambassador, to thank him for confirming a bull of his predecessor Honorius, in favor of the Monks of Westminster in 1330 at 4 Edward III.6 He performed his best service, perhaps, by bringing the famous Mortimer Earl of March, the Queen's gallant, to punishment in October 1330 at 4 Edward III.6 He was a witness where Roger, 1st Earl of March captured and imprisoned by Edward III of England, whom he'd helped to throne, and Henry, Earl of Lancaster, in October 1330 at Nottingham Castle, England. William de Montagu, King of the Isle of Man was summoned to Parliament in 1331.1 He was made Constable of the Tower of London in 1336 at England.6 He was constituted Admiral of the King's fleet, from the mouth of the Thames westward in 1337.6 He was created 2nd Earl of Salisbury on 16 March 1336/37.1,8 He found time in his busy career to establish at Bisham, on the banks of the Thames 4 miles from Maidenhead, a Monastery before 1338 at Berkshire, England.6 He founded a priory for Canons of the order of St. Augustine, in the words of his charter, "dedicated to Our Lord and the Virgin," in 1338.6 He was advanced, in consideration of his faithful services in the Scottish wars, and otherwise, to the title and dignity of Earl of Salisbury, with a grant of the annual rent of £20 out of the profits of that County, in 1338 at England.6 1st Earl of Salisbury at England between 1338 and 1344.6 He obtained, in consideration of his services both in the field and cabinet, a grant of the office of Earl Marshal of England in 1339.6 He obtained the King's precept to the lord treasurer and barons of the exchequer for an allowance of five marks each day while he was abroad on his service in 1339.6 He suffered great indignities during his imprisonment; and upon his arrival in Paris would certainly have been put to death, had not the King of Bohemia (possibly a relative of his wife) interposed in his behalf, in 1340.6 He had the command of the army jointly with the Earl of Suffolk, and when these two commanders laid siege to Lisle, then in possession of the French, they were both made prisoners by the besieged, who sallied out and drew them after them into the town, in 1340.6 He was on campaign in 1341 at Flanders.6 He was on campaign in 1342 at France.6 He conquered the isle of Man, when King Edward (having before given him the inheritance thereof ) crowned him King of Man circa 1343.6 He served upon the borders of Scotland with the Earl of Ulster in 1343.6 King of the Isle of Man between 1343 and 30 January 1344. He died in 1344 at Windsor Castle, Berkshire, England. A truce having been concluded with France for three years, the Earl returned to England, where he exercised himself so immoderately, in jousts and tournaments, that he fell into a fever of which he died in the forty-third year of his life.6,1 He was the predecessor of William de Montagu, 2nd Earl of Salisbury; 2nd Earl of Salisbury.9,6 William de Montagu, King of the Isle of Man was buried in the White Friars, London, England.5
